About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 200gillianc0 contributionsWindmill villageAbsolutely recommend going to see the windmills and clog making. My whole family enjoyed the experience. We decided to catch the train from Amsterdam central which was a fraction of the tour guide price. It’s a short walk from the station to the windmill village where it’s free to see the clog making workshop and enter the windmill shops. We only had to pay for entry into the working windmill.Written 13 December 2024
- TraveinArtist0 contributionsA pleasant afternoon excursionWhile I enjoyed seeing an area outside of Amsterdam that included scenic waterways and historic mills, the cheese factory is not an actual cheese factory where they make cheese, rather it is an educational display in a former small cheese factory with cheese samples and store. There was a demonstration showing how wood clogs are made. I thought our guide was very good, just know that this is a more touristy type tour.Written 13 December 2024
- JourneyWithPassion0 contributionsA Charming Journey Through Dutch Tradition: Zaanse Schans Windmills & Cheese TouHighly recommend this tour if you're visiting Amsterdam! It’s a great way to experience Dutch culture and history in a short amount of time. Perfect for families or anyone interested in traditional craftsmanship. Tips that i would like to give Wear comfortable shoes, as there’s some walking involved. Don’t miss the cheese tasting—it’s delicious! Bring a camera for beautiful photos of the windmills and countryside. Arrive a little early to fully enjoy the experience before the group departsWritten 10 December 2024
- sharondI5277OL0 contributionsNice trip out of the city.Such a nice trip out of the city. I think you could do most of this on your own, however our guide was very good. We went on a Monday and arrived about 2:30 to the village. Keep in mind this is a VERY windy location and although the weather forecast called for 45 degrees F. It was freezing cold. I had extra clothes and was glad I had every piece of clothing. We sampled chocolate, cheese and had a demo of a wooden shoe making process. This town gets 3million visitors a year and it is small. It must be insane in the summer. Got some nice pics.Written 9 December 2024
- U1614ZNstefanieh0 contributionsRainy and cold but funEven so it was rainy and cold our tour guide made it fun! She alternated inside with outside activities! She was very knowledgeable. Love that little village. Because of the weather there were no crowds!Written 5 December 2024

- Dankw920 contributionsWindmills, Clogs, Chocolate and Cheese!Zaanse Schans is a must-visit for anyone wanting a taste of traditional Dutch culture! The village is incredibly picturesque, with its iconic windmills, charming wooden houses, and serene canals. It felt like stepping into a postcard. The local craftsmanship on display was a highlight. Watching traditional clogs being made was fascinating, and the selection of handcrafted shoes in the shop was delightful. The cheese and chocolate were divine! Sampling the variety of cheeses, from creamy goudas to spiced specialties, was a real treat, and the chocolate was equally irresistible. The guided tour was well-organized and informative, though we found it a little quick. It would have been nice to have more time to explore freely, as there’s so much to see and soak in. However, we understand there’s a lot to cover in one trip. Overall, Zaanse Schans offers a fantastic peek into Dutch heritage, and we’d highly recommend it. Just plan to go back if you want to linger longer!Written 26 November 2024
- Patrick S0 contributionseat the cheese, wear the clogsGreat location to visit, and having Micky our guide added a lot to the experience. Good value for money, interesting inputs at the cheese factory and the paint mill and the clog makers. Good demos by witty presenters. Plenty of things to try or taste, plenty of time to do your own thing too. Only 25 minutes drive, would recommend.Written 24 November 2024

- davegX1994QC0 contributionsA fantastic morning trip, close to Amsterdam CityThis was a great way to explore a windmill and old houses, close to the city. We met at a spot in central city and 25 minutes later we were at the destination. David was a great tour host - growing up nearby he understood the area and the history. Fascinating to find out how windmills were used in so many different ways. The cheese store and clog makers were well worth the visit too.Written 15 November 2024
- KaetM10 contributionsFantastic Tour!Very well planned trip. Collum acted as our driver & our tourguide. He was pleasant and funny with lots of great information. The actual village is amazing and we saw alot in our allotted time. I've been living in Amsterdam as an ex pat for a few years now and learned so much. I would highly recommend!Written 11 November 2024
- elisag2600 contributionsFun afternoon in the countrysideThis was a comfortable way to experience this area. Our guide Bianca was friendly and knowledgeable about Dutch history. Being part of the tour allowed us to get private access to the clog making and cheese making demonstrations. It’s an interesting area to spend a few hours. The ride there and back in the tour bus was very comfortable.Written 10 November 2024

My wife and I enjoyed the private tour for the day...and the day ended with us experiencing the tulips in peak bloom and a walk throughout a reconstructed Holland village comprising original homes and windmills that were brought in to form a small village. A perfect day to check off from our 'bucket list' of vacation trips.

It was so exciting to see the windmills and learn about their purpose and how they work. And, of course, the tulips were absolutely gorgeous.
The entire tour was made so perfect because of our tour guide. Ester was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Also since she had actually grown up in a windmill, she provided insight that we could not have gotten from anyone else.
A perfect day!

Immensely enjoyed the garden, despite the weather, as well as the lunch and village. Only disappointment was that I thought I was hiring a private guide for the day. We were shuttled among three different individuals: two drivers and one guide at Zaan Schans. Already had an IAmsterdam card so could easily have arranged transport on my own and saved a lot a money. There was no room for flexibility or convenience of leaving things in the car. Did not feel like a private tour at all.

Our guide Paul was very knowledgeable, funny and sweet. My husband and I really enjoyed this private tour. Paul was on time picking us up at our hotel, spoke English very well and was so nice. We saw windmills, a demonstration of wooden shoes being made, a demonstration of the making of cheese, walk around all the windmills and went into the windmills. Paul explained the working of the windmills and what each one produced. We had a pancake lunch and went to see the tulips. The tulips are really something to see. I highly recommend this private tour. it Was just a gorgeous day!

We were picked up promptly by Collum at our hotel right on time! He is such an asset to Zaan Tours, as he is both engaging and professional. He offered information when we wanted it, but didn't carry on when we didn't. Everything went smoothly with ticketing and when we were transferred to another guide at Zaanse Schans, we were also very happy with Rayetta. She was very knowledgable about the windmills and courteous and helpful as well. Highly recommend Zaan Tours!

I would love to give an excellent review, because the actual attractions were wonderful! What wasn't wonderful: We were not picked up at our hotel, nor were we given the option. We were told to meet at a berm in front of a hotel near Centraal Station with the 2 other groups in our party. Our driver was half an hour late, and no one in our group was notified. (Call #1 to Tour company.) While he was very nice, he offered no "guide" advice about what we would be seeing or doing, We were dropped off at Zaanse Schans and given over to Ingrid (who was amazing, so I'll get back to her!) Another driver picked us up and apparently had no idea where we were going. We told him Pancakes were next on the itinerary but he left it to us to call the tour company to find out where we were going. (That was call #2) Again, there was no guiding of any kind. He then dropped us off at the Pancake restaurant, with no instructions. We got out of the van, he drove off! In the restaurant, they thankfully knew we were coming. Back to lunch in a minute. A third DIFFERENT driver picked us up from lunch at took us to Keukenhof, where once again, we were just dropped off. No guiding of any kind. And what's worse, we tried to get in and couldn't because we had no tickets on us. After another call to the Zaan Tours company (#3), our driver returned with the tickets he had forgotten to give us. Everyone was beyond frustrated at this point. This is not an inexpensive "tour." With tickets in hand, we entered the park, with an agreed time to meet the driver outside. Yes, driver. Not a tour guide. He didn't come in with us, and in fact has never in his life seen the gardens. We went off on our own to enjoy the beautiful gardens and regrouped later.
Zaanse Schans was beautiful and our guide, Ingrid, was incredible. She herself lives in the Windmill village and was an enthusiastic font of information. She introduced us to her neighbors, treated us with a tour of her personal home, and offered up a lot of insider tidbits.
The Pancake lunch was at a lovely lodge-style restaurant and the food was delicious! There were several options other than pancakes, by the way, and drinks, from beer and wine to milkshakes and smoothies, were included.
Keukenhoff Gardens were beautiful, amazing, exqusite! We had plenty of time there to explore and enjoy.
All in all, it was a lovely day and we met some really nice people in our small group, but I would hardly call this a private tour, except for the Windmills. We could have cobbled that together ourselves for far less money, as Zaanse Schans is free to visit to begin with!

Our guide had never taken people to Keukenhof Gardens before, which surprised me since we had booked a rather pricey private tour. He was good in the afternoon at the windmills etc.
The gardens were lovely and the Zaan Schans area was also well worth seeing. The pancake lunch was surprisingly good. A good day.

We did this private tour with Bart today. We had a most enjoyable day spent with Bart. He gave us so much information about the areas and also plenty of time to enjoy this memorable day, including lunch at a local restaurant.
We would highly recommend this private tour as Bart was a great host and he looked after us graciously.
Thank you Bart.

Does the tour include a guide thru the tulip fields and Windmill locations or are we on our own.
Written 2 January 2022
We would like to book a tour on 25/4 but is not available. Is it full now?
Written 31 July 2019
I wish that I could provide more accurate information for you, but it was our understanding that the tulip observations for guests only last 4-6 weeks. The Hollanders stagger their growing of tulips primary in 3 overlapping planting times to compensate for potential bad weather conditions impacting tulip growth, plus this practice extends the season. But in sharing this, I suggest that you would be wise to check with sources other than me. My wife and I were fortunate to hit the tulips at peak time in 2019 which was the last week of April.

is this wheelchair accessible? we have one in our party who needs wheelchair access
Written 31 December 2018
This particular tour can accommodate, with some restrictions/limitations. Wheelchairs have access to the grounds, but there are opportunities to go inside windmills and other working farm areas that would not be conducive to wheelchairs. Net out, I would say that an individual visiting what is offered on this tour can have a wonderful experience despite the few restrictions.
Written 21 June 2019
How much time do you spend at Keukenhoff Gardens? Is it a guided tour through the Gardens or are you on your own?
Written 26 July 2018
The amount of time needed at Keukenhoff Gardens depends on the interests of the visitor. However in general, I would say that one must minimally plan 3 1/2 hours, but 4 hours or more is suggested. As for touring the grounds, I strongly recommend scheduling your tour far in advance of your trip which can be explored online. There are many different option types to select from. If online is not your thing, you could call direct to get information or work directly with your favorite travel agent.
Written 21 June 2019
Is this tour still operating in late June? What are the gardens like then?
Written 2 April 2018
The tulips will not be blooming in late June, but you can go online and search for tours of windmills and pancake lunch, where you will find there are several different types of tours available that are packaged/coupled with varied tourist destinations based on the time of year of your visit.
