- 389cheryllp0 contributionsMagical Day With Katia in Savoca/TaorminaI simply LOVED EVERYTHING about this tour. We started the day being delayed coming into port, but a quick text to Discover Messina Sicily and they alleviated any concerns I had. They assured me that they would be waiting when we got to port and that they would not be late returning. When we did arrived in port, Discover Messina Sicily were so easy to find and our guide, Katia, welcomed us warmly. We boarded a comfortable coach and headed up to Savoca. Katia was so knowledgeable on all the history and traditions of Sicily and Savoca. Her English was impeccable and she made everyone feel at home in her beautiful country. She allowed us ample time to explore Savoca and enjoy Bar Vitelli before we re-boarded the bus to Taormina. Taormina was amazing and we certainly had ample time there as well. We were all in a very good mood when we loaded up for the short bus ride back to the port. Door to door service and with plenty of time to spare to allow us a few minutes in Messina. I would 100% recommend Discover Messina Sicily Tours to anyone arriving in Messina. This tour was one of the highlights of our entire cruise. Thank you Katia for your amazing hospitality.Written 13 February 2025
- L1272AXsandyh0 contributionsFantastic day seeing Taormina and Castelmola! We had the most enjoyable day seeing the spectacular sites of Taormina and Castelmola while in Sicily! While on a Viking cruise, we opted to use Discover Messina Sicily for the day and are so very glad we did. Our guide, Sara, was very knowledgeable, kind, and passionate about sharing so much interesting information about her homeland. She offered some choices as time permitted us to see even more than we initially expected! It was an exceptional experience and would highly recommend Discover Messina Sicily.Written 13 February 2025
- timbo7420 contributionsA wonderful highlight of our vacationMy wife and I spent a day in Taormina and Castelmola with Discover Messina Sicily while on a trip through a number of Mediterranean locations. Among the 6 or 7 tour groups we used in our trip, Discover Messina Sicily was by far the best. Our guide, Sara, was very knowledgeable, easy to spend a day with, and very kind and helpful. She and our driver suggested extra stops beyond our initial itinerary when it became clear time would allow. Best of all, it was clear that Sara loves her town and island. As she provided history, mythology, and other information about the region, we couldn’t help but love the place, too. Five stars and some! Thank you for a memorable day, Discover Messina Sicily!Written 2 February 2025
- P9991FEjant0 contributionsBeautiful Italy and tour guide Katie! Our guide was outstanding! Katie was a delightful caring and informative tour guide as she took us on the Messina and Godfather tour, yesterday. She generously provided us with an almond cookie on the bus and shared with us all of the rich history of Messina. She was like family to us so rapidly that I even invited her to be a guest in my home if she ever wants to visit Michigan in the United States Hands-down she gets a 10 star review from me!Written 31 January 2025
- ChrisC433-5150 contributionsGreat Tour from Messina! This was an awesome tour. We were picked up right where we disembarked the ship (name on card). The bus driver was phenomenal! The Godfather Tour was really informational. Getting to walk the same path as in the movie was iconic. Having granitas and cannolis at Bar Vitelli was a great experience. Taormina was absolutely lovely. The views of Mount Etna were breathtaking! Our tour guide (Kate) couldn’t have done anything better. She was amazing!Written 30 January 2025
- jillsV2502DA0 contributionsThe best experience! This was a fantastic tour. The guides were amazing and so kind. We had such a small group that they added extra stops to see a few off the beaten path sites. We learned so much, saw amazing things and we are so grateful to the guides.Written 30 January 2025
- tweti520 contributionsWonderful Tour and Tour Guide! We visited Mt Etna & Taormina. This was our favorite tour during our 10 Day cruise. Our guide, Carmelo made the day so enjoyable. He was informative, friendly and very personable. You could tell he loved this beautiful island of Sicily. We had plenty of time to explore the craters of Mt Etna, visited an olive tasting farm and the bustling town of Taormina. Our bus driver, Carmelo & our group made for a perfect visit to Sicily.Written 21 January 2025
- Brandon V0 contributionsCastelmola & TaorminaWe booked the Castelmola & Taormina trip and were very impressed with whole experience. It started off with a wonderful drive through the hills and tunnels following the coastline which had spectacular views. We visited Castelmola first where we took a walk through the small village and made our way to the top where we had magnificent views of the mountainside and coast. We then visited Taormina where we received an excellent walking tour from Gabrielle who highlighted all the significant historical landmarks as well as gave us some restaurant recommendations that were fantastic.Written 30 December 2024
- victoriamL7172QM0 contributionsBrilliant tour - the most knowledgeable tour guide! We had such a great experience with Sara as our guide on this tour. Other reviews have said she exceeded expectations, and that was the case for us too. Sara's knowledge of Messina, Taormina and Sicily generally is incredible. She told us so much about the history and culture of the island, and there wasn't a question that she couldn't answer. I really appreciate that level of context when visiting a place, but she really impressed us. She also knew the best place in Taormina to get cannoli, which is valuable enough on its own!Written 28 December 2024

And boy are we glad we were able to experience the beautiful towns of Taormina and Castelmola. Our guide Sara was amazing and exceeded our expectations. We will be back to Sicily and when we return will be booking with Sara!Written 3 December 2024
- Rick_W960 contributionsEtna and TaorminaThe tour was good but sadly we had poor weather. It was very Foggy up on Mt Etna so we couldn't see the summit. In Taormina it rained quite a bit so we got soaked but that did not change our enthusiasm for Sicily and especially Taormina...It was a beautiful and colorful little city!Written 2 December 2024

- DayDreamingForever0 contributionsPerfect day excursion in MessinaTaormina and Castelmola Shore Excursion 6hrs Excellent tour for our cruise ship visit. The guide & tour company reps met us on the pier and were easy to find, and all very well organised. During the drive we were given lots of interesting information on Sicily. In beautiful Castelmola we had a short walking tour followed by some free time to explore more or have coffee and enjoy the amazing views. In Taormina we had a full hour walking tour through the length of the town - so fascinating and interesting and beautiful! We then had free time to wander and explore, to shop, to eat, and to relax and enjoy this gorgeous town. The guide pointed out recommended places to eat etc. The coach brought us back to the ship pier, on time. Overall a really excellent tour that was good value for money, esp when compared to the Cruise line excursions on offer. We had a perfect day in Messina/ Sicily. Highly recommended!Written 30 November 2024
- DKstrvls0 contributionsPerfect day in SicilyWe spent a perfect day on our cruise's port stop in Sicily touring Taormina and the Blue Grotto. Giulia was a wonderful guide. She shared fascinating information about what we were seeing and wonderful stories of her life and family in Sicily. The stories about her grandma were both funny and heartwarming. Our boat ride was absolutely gorgeous and so relaxing. Our Captain was entertaining and very friendly. He showed us so many beautiful sites and our swim in the gorgeous blue waters was wonderful. Our free time in Taormina afterwards allowed us to explore its beauty at our own pace. We couldn't have asked for a better day. Thank you Giulia!Written 25 November 2024

We were looking for a way to see Messina during our stay in port, and this ticked all the boxes. In a small group with a knowledgeable guide, we were able to see many points of cultural or historical significance and learn a lot about the city. As a walking tour, it is a very healthy way to see the city, but it was a relaxed walk that would not tax most tourists. Finishing at a local eatery for some snacks (included in the price) was a lovely way to round out the experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our (wife and I) tour of Messina. Though limited in scope and excitement due to most of the historic sites being flattened by an earthquake in 1908 and allied bombings during WWII, we did enjoy the visit to the cathedral and the daily midday clock tower show.
However the highlight of our tour was our visit to the only surviving small family puppet museum. This is a fabulous, hidden gem, tucked away in a side street that our tour guide knew about. It is owned and operated by the 5th generation descendants of the founder. The exhibit was phenomenal, old, intriguing, and still operates as a museum and puts on shows. I was skeptical at first when the guide told us about it, but I was totally swept away once we got into the place. Everyone in our group felt the same. Whether a kid or a kid-at-heart this is a must see. It is few minutes from the main clock tower square. It’s not well known but should be soon.

We paid a day visit to this delightful port-side town with oodles of history.
Never one to keep still we climbed the steps to the picturesque church on the left peak of the town. Lining our route were several huge fibreglass painted ducks adorned in various artistic hues. Some with memorial plaques.
The scene from the top, beautiful, depicting the town and harbour below. The church inside, beautiful too with a breath-taking ceiling.
Directly across from the church is the sombre, yet grandiose, mausoleum. The Italian version of the unknown warrior, recognising the many lives sacrificed throughout all conflicts by Sicilian people. Again another awesome view and then the climb down to the shopping plaza.
Sicily is a place we could easily see us vacationing in for a long period of time.

In fairness, there are only a few things to see in Messina, but our tour guide Gabriella mostly stated the obvious about them -this is a church, this is the theater, and so on. Except to describe what buildings were rebuilt, we got only the rudiments of Messina's history, nothing about the economy, life in the city, or much of anything. Before the tour, we were pleased with the relatively reasonable cost of $39pp, but afterwards, we thought the tour was very poor value. Still, Gabrielle was a sweet, thoughtful and enthusiastic guide.

Our guide was nice and had good information but the tour suffered because there were two non-English speakers so he had to explain everything twice. That did not really bother me, but it definitely bothered some of the group who then wandered off and were not engaged which was then distracting. I understand the need to occasionally have a bilingual tour but if 20 people speak English and only two don't I think you lose something by explaining everything twice. Met us right outside the cruise port and gave us a bottle of water, which was nice. Finally, $25 is a bit high for a 20+ person tour that only lasts two hours.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed the 2-hour walking tour of Messina. The Discover Messina office personnel were extremely hospitable and even helped us park our large van. Note that if you drive a "people mover" (Italian term for large van) it won't fit in the nearby Cavallotti lot - you'll need to find an on-street space.
Our tour guide was a native of Messina who was enthusiastic about the city. She took us to many places that were both architecturally and historically interesting, and was able to answer all of our questions. The view of the Port of Messina was beautiful, and it was just cool to get a visual of how the Greek myth of Scylla and Charybdis (origin of "between a rock and a hard place") came to be. The tour purposely arrives at the cathedral at 12 noon to see and hear the daily presentation and our guide explained the meaning of each part. The tour ended with a dessert treat (choice of cannoli or gelato) and it was the best pear gelato I've ever had.
All in all, it was a great way to learn about Messina's long history, made all the more enjoyable by the gracious hosts. Just wear sunscreen and bring bottled water because in the summer, Messina can be roasting.

Our group went into Messina City tour with high expectations. We found this particular tour did not turn out to be as we had hoped. This created a larger group of people. The guide did not make sure all of the people were caught up with her before moving on due to the fact we were crowded together on the sidewalk. The tour had 18 people although it stated no more than 16 in the details of the tour description.
The tour guide was speaking in 2 different languages with a small number of people that were added late. The tour description only listed one language for the tour. The issue was with every item being explained in 2 languages, it took much longer to get through information. It was easy to lose track of who was being talked to at any given time and therefore was often confusing. Unfortunately, this add on group monopolized the guides time with a different language that the remaining 13 could not understand.
The city tour left us with little viewing of the city. We did not get more than 3 blocks away from the cruise ship. We did not see very much of this vast area. 2 fountains, 2 churches (others in the background), puppet museum, and a sweet treat.
Overall, we were disappointed.

Claudio (hope I have his correct name) was our guide and did a wonderful job of explaining the history of Messina on this 2 hour small group walking tour. The highlight was the clock tower show at noon, a must see when in Messina. Gelato sample at the end of the tour was a refreshing and unexpected treat! Our group was about half English-speaking and half Spanish-speaking, and Claudio handled the situation well, explaining each sight fluently in both languages. A lot of walking involved, but not difficult at all.

Frontier city, nothing to see, bad roads, dirt everywhere, dilapidated buildings, motorists drive like dogs, wild parking, rude and wild people, they seem to have remained in the stone age. Rules 0. The city from the other part of the strait.

This was a great, easy tour with an energetic and knowledgeable guide. As we walked off the cruise ship there stood our guide with our name on a sheet and from there we took off to walk and learn about this beautiful city. Easy to book online at a very reasonable price. We loved the tour. My only negative is why oh why do people with mobility issues book a two hour walking tour.
