We enjoyed local food and wine and learned about the market. If you have time and want to enjoy food and wine with a local, book with Alessia.Written 13 July 2024
- arandsr0 contributionsSicilian food and wine with smile and foodA Fantastic few hours with Alessia walking through the markets of Isola di Ortigia. A great start at Fratelli Burgio then shopping through the stalls followed by the Komi g class. A wonderful experienceWritten 21 September 2023
- Richbutnot0 contributionsGood, But Not What We ExpectedWe were expecting more food and wine tasting and less of a history tour. We spent a bit of time at the the Apollo Temple and walked some side streets. He then walked us through the market followed by a great lunch and one glass of wine. I think we could have done that all on our own. There was another couple on the tour which was fine, but the web site says a max of 12 which would have been too crowded. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable.Written 13 May 2023
- kellywS5385HJ0 contributionsOrtigia Market tour and food tastingOur guide was wonderful - she was knowledgeable about the location, vendors and products. However, this was more of a food market and tasting and not the wine tasting we were hoping for. Our goal was to get a better understanding of the wine varieties from this region. That said, it was an interesting tour, we learned about the cheeses/meats/produce/etc. from the Etna region and we would highly recommend it.Written 13 April 2023
- BBcanada1230 contributionsGood Food TourI did a food tour with Alessia. It was terrific. I go on lots of food tours and this was a great introduction to the market place and all it had to offer. I wished would of done it first thing because the first stop was spectacular. A cheese/meat deli with delicious wine. A BIG GLASS lol.. Start the tour off right!! We had some cheese, meats, bread and vegetables. Then we tasted a few market varieties. Then we had a selection of calamari, vegetables, shrimp, arandini, and a small beer. We then tasted a few more treats at the market and finished with a delicious dessert at the meeting spot. I thought it was very good. Not too much food but certainly enough. Alessia was excellent. I highly recommend. I heard she also does a cooking class that is great.Written 31 October 2022
- Z4356EUalexw0 contributionsSeptember BlissVisiting Ortagia it is a wonderful and stunning location. We hired a scooter at the airport and rode to Syracusa where we stayed in a wonderful AirBnB in the old town. Food is super and we spend one day at the Lido Arabella another stunning location about 20 minutes outside Ortagia. Breakfast or lunch at the Calarossa Cafe is a must with the home made produce and "special" house spritz.Written 19 September 2022
- HeatherSt990 contributionsHighly RecommendWe took this tour on a cruise stop, and have already recommended this to several people! It's only a couple of hours (leaving plenty of time to explore after), and Damiano introduced us to things we never would have found on our own. Fair warning - come hungry and you won't regret it! Also be warned you may be ruined for food from where you are from. My husband joked we will never eat Polly-O mozzarella again!Written 14 September 2022
- jetset2220 contributionsYou must meet this team!Dameano is the “rock star” sommelier and food aficionado who conveys the passion of Sicily with his wonderful skill and personality. He is a hidden gem in Sicily. Arranging dinners at fabulous local restaurants where the amazing chefs are his friends to Michelin star establishments we were treated like Royalty. His wife Allessia at Smile and Food is his perfect partner teaching us the cook delicious Sicilian food. Don’t miss this dynamic duo!!Written 22 May 2022
- slickvik2420 contributionsExcellent timeThis was the first cooking class I ever signed up for. This was more than a class, it was an experience. We started by going to the local market and sampling some local delicacies. From there we selected out ingredients for the class. Then, it was to the kitchen where we did the preparations and cooking. Alessia was so friendly, spending time with a local really made the trip to Siracusa special. I highly recommend this to all who have any interest in Sicilian food, as you learn a skill for life.Written 4 August 2019

- lsaporito950 contributionsThe best experience in OrtigiaAlessia does such a wonderful job and has titled her business appropriately, because you will Smle all the time you are learning about and eating Sicilian food. Not only was this fun and taste filled but Alessia also is very INFORMATIVE about the history and source of food on the island. Absolutely fantastic expereince. Cannot speak highly enough of Alessia and her team!Written 25 July 2019
- 332smp0 contributionsUnique cooking experienceWe had a great day with Alessia. Shopping in the market of ortigia and cooking in her kitchen. Alessia was happy to teach us to cook whatever we suggested and we made pasta, a tomato sugo, eggplant parmigiana, stuffed calamari and cannoli. Yum!! It was fascinating to learn that so few fresh ingredients make a wonderful meal. Alessia was extremely generous with her time and hospitality. Highly recommendWritten 3 July 2019
- E3647OAsandya0 contributionsDown to earth Sicilian foodLooking for a cooking class with a difference, then this is the one you need to book. You start at the local produce market on the island of Ortigia, where you select the fresh produce that you will cook and eat. You select the freshest ingredients that are in season, so you know they will be at there very best for flavour. You get to pick the theme, meat v fish. Alessia will then take you back to her home where you help prepare and cook what you have purchased. Make sure you don’t eat to much beforehand, as there is plenty to eat. This is a must do when you come to Sicily, highly recommendedWritten 24 June 2019
- Simon R0 contributionsWonderful Sicilian Food Experience in OrtigiaThank you Alissia for a fantastic day. We loved our visit to the Ortigia market. The plater from the deli was delicious and it was very special to meet the cheese maker. We had a great time selecting the ingredients and preparing the Ravioli with fresh Ricotta with a delicious tomato sauce in your kitchen This was followed by Tuna topped with sweet and sour peppers. A warning for all! Do not eat breakfast before this slow food experience.Written 12 June 2019

Alessia was the perfect guide to show us the Sicilian ways of cooking and the large variations of world class delicacies you can find in lovely Ortigia. She was super communicative, reliable and knowledgeable. One could see that this world is her home and passion, by her way of showing the food on the market as well as preparing it in the perfect kitchen setup. You might get some special treatment as she is friends with several shop owners. She was very proud to share her food and the stories and went out of her way to give us the best experience we could imagine. We also received a large collection of her recipes.
Thank you so so much Alessia!!

We loved our market visit and cooking with Alessia. She expertly guided us through the food market of Ortigia and the preparation of a wonderfully authentic meal based on some of our own culinary preferences. Alessia has a very warm and engaging manner, and we enjoyed her stories and explanations of Sicilian food culture just as much as the cooking experience.

We toured Sicily with our adult children and young grandchildren. Alessia was able to incorporate all the ages and make it a fun day for everyone. Our young grandchildren (ages 2-7) were stuffing squid and loving it!!
Alessia went through the market with us after asking what we would like to prepare. She chose the ingredients and we followed her to a restaurant site that offered plenty of space for all to join in.
Alessia was so friendly and made the whole experience one we will always remember.
Thank you Alessia!

Alessia immediately put my mind at ease and explained at great length about how individualistic she makes each tour. The tour felt seamless and we learned about the local traditions and selections at the market, while sipping on wine and trying samples.
Once we had determined what we wished to cook for our meal, we began to walk to her personal kitchen, showing us sites and giving us recommendations along the way.
She was thoughtful and it really felt like we were immersed into the experience with how well known she is within the community, having been a fish monger before becoming a chef.
As for the cooking, she was very patient with me and my clumsy hands and explained each of the proper ways to prepare each ingredient, and what those methods added to the dish. Cooking off the liquid of the pumpkin and THEN adding salt in order to retain texture and flavor was one lesson that sticks to mind.
She is also delightful and was mind enough to send me a few recommendations and recipes after the tour.
Highlight of my journey to Siracusa.

Incredible ! Learn, cook and eat in a cheerful environment, Alessia is very good! Highly recommended
A truly unmissable experience with Alessia. The location is very beautiful and the garden is fascinating. She is very knowledgeable and super welcoming, we spent carefree and cheerful hours learning about the history of the food we were preparing, the ingredients are all organic and local and Alessia enhances the flavours. We cooked and ate happily. A unique experience to understand and learn the Sicilian culinary culture.

We went through the marketplace with Alessia (where she knows everyone) and then back to her kitchen to cook lunch with the purchases. Alessia tailors the menu to the needs of the clients and was easily able to accommodate the member of our party with celiac disease. She is certified by the AIC (Italian Celiac Association) but her kitchen is not exclusively GF. Alessia is a gem. The whole experience was delightful from start to delicious finish. It was one of the highlights of our time in Sicily. This was the most expensive activity we did, and it was definitely worth it.

My husband and I were looking for fun stuff to do while in Italy. We stumbled across this cooking class with Alessia and it sounded fun since we are trying to get more into cooking. Alessia was AMAZING and literally the kindest person. She made this the best experience and it was honestly one of the funnest days we had together! We met her at the market and she showed us around while we picked out ingredients for the pasta! We shopped around and had an absolute blast. We then went back to start cooking and she prepared a table for us and then continued to show us how to make everything. It was THE BEST pasta and meatballs! After we ate, she surprised us with a Cannoli to make! When we come back to Italy I cannot wait to book with her again. I 100% recommend her and the experience to anyone!
