We booked the Mask painting workshop through Venice tours and received an email confirmation. When we arrived at the appointed time, the owners told us the time Venus tours booked us for was not available and they had notified Venus that the tour was cancelled. We tried messaging and calling but we're told they could not help us because "Dotravel" made the booking. Dotravel does not list a telephone number and subsequent messages and phone calls to Venus tours went unanswered. We had to dispute the charge with our credit card company. We only had a couple of days in Venus with 12 year old children and this was one of the few things they wanted to do. Venus Tours ruined our last day in Venice. Would never recommend them to anyone.

VENICETOURS
Dear Client, I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. After checking, I inform you that unfortunately, Do Travel booked an activity we (Venice tours, local provider) closed a few months ago, in fact, when we noted the reservation, we immediately contacted Do travel in order to cancel it for free and refund you. Probably Do Travel didn't cancel it and the reservation has been kept anyway even if for us it's not working anymore.

This was a really nice experience, the master craftsman that runs it with his family is amazingly skilled and a very nice person! He was very accommodating and stayed open late for our appointment. Would 100% recommend as a super fun experience with a little bit of history too!
Definitely go here to get the full authentic mask making experience!

This experience was AMAZING! Giorgio was a true master in his craft! I loved painting and picking out my mask it came out beautiful. I also loved hearing about the history which I will never forget! He was so kind and helpful with the color scheme and teaching me how to do it. He even practiced some Italian with me! This experience is a MUST do! You will love it! I would do it again and bring everyone I know to it! Grazie mille!

A really fun experience for both kids and adults! You get to choose your own mask out of many different kinds of masks, paint it and take it home with you. While you paint your mask, the mask maker gives you the history of the mask making art and tells how it has come to be the thing it is today. It's a great experience if you just want to have a relaxing day and dive in to your artistic self.

This class was the highlight of our 2 week vacation for my 7 year old. She loved everything about the class and wanted to paint more masks. She would have gone back every day if I had allowed her to. The owners of the shop arrived very patient and explained the history of Carnival to us while we waited. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough!

My daughter and I took this class together and we had a fabulous time! Nicolo was extremely nice and explained the history of the masks and all about different parts of Venetian culture and life to us in great detail! He truly has a passion for his craft. Our masks turned out great! In addition to the ones we painted, I also purchased 3 of Nicolo’s creations to include an awesome steampunk gas mask style for my husband who is a firefighter and very into “Hazmat” style things! I plan to visit this shop everytime I am in Venice and I will 100% recommend to all our friends to book this experience!

Set off a small square not far from San Marco, this shop is easy to miss at first glance. A small note in the window and stands outside of the shop with masks drying is the only indication that you're at the right place. I think this only adds to the charm though, you're not amidst the hustle and bustle of Venice. The owner is just as unassuming as the premises, which are filled wall to ceiling with beautifully-crafted and designed Venetian masks. The owner is a true artist and the perfect person to guide you through this exercise.

Visiting in a post-COVID world, masks (ironically) need to be worn in the shop, and your guide for the afternoon will wear one as well. The class starts with you selecting a blank mask to work on, then you add a simple pencil design (you can try something complicated as I did, then regret it as it is too time-consuming!). From this, you are shown how to apply your chosen selection of paints (two coats), then the teacher will add detailing and flourishes to the finished article.

Whilst the masks are drying, the owner then proceeds to explain the history of masks in Venice. He is informative, engaging and friendly throughout and I feel like I got a real insight in to this Venetian craft.

Negatives would be that the shop / studio is a little small for larger groups. We were there as a couple but I think that more than this would be a struggle for the space. Additionally, there were a few times where some more instruction would have been useful - During the painting phase especially as we didn't realise that "less is more" and to just cover the mask, rather than expecting bright, solid colours.

The price is quite high at over £50 each, but when you consider that you have exclusive use of the place for a couple of hours, an insightful presentation at the end, and then a discount on any purchases made afterwards, it is about right in my opinion. Venice isn't a cheap place to visit after all!

All my daughter wanted to do was buy a mask when we stumbled on this shop as part of a tour. Came back the next day and had an incredible time with Master Giorgio.

Both my 9 and 5 year old loved it. They got to pick their mask then paint and decorate it.

Plan an hour or two to include drying. Prices were reasonable for such a unique souvenir.
