What to expect
Take a public bus up to the hilltop town of Montenero a short 15 minutes away to meet a local winemaker for a sunset wine tour of Montenero. Follow your guide on a small trail until you reach a Montenero vineyard. The town and vineyard both enjoy sweeping views over the Cinque Terre, a beautiful National Park on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Learn about this region’s traditional wine-making methods - centuries-old techniques that have stood the test of time - as you walk through the rows of grapes. The focus is on making high-quality wine without using chemical products, and the results are the pride of the Cinque Terre. After a tour of the vineyard, you'll enjoy two local wines to taste the delicate fruit flavors and find out first-hand how organic wine-making makes a difference. Nibble on a traditional Ligurian focaccia bread while you sip your wine and listen to how these wines were made. At the conclusion of your exploration of Cinque Terre wines, your tour ends where it began. You can go back to Riomaggiore on foot, by bus or by private transfer.

A highlight of our Cinque Terre trip
Oct. 2019
Andre owns a vineyard and makes wine using "primitive" methods. (He even crushes them with his feet at times.) He clearly loves his work and knows it very well. He explained everything from the planting and care of the vines all the way to the bottling and labeling. There were just 8 of us on this tour and it felt intimate and informative. He answered all of our questions in very good English.

Warning: it's not easy to get there. You must take a city bus and the tour will require hiking up and down the vineyards which are not maintained paths. But we found the little effort well worth it. I believe it helped me understand the land and people much better.

Hi JeffT396, our primary goal with this kind of tours is to help our guests to better understand this particular and fragile territory. So, we're very very happy that you found this helpful and interesting. We hope to see you again here in Cinque Terre!

Beautiful scenery
My husband and I did this hike and wine tour in Riomaggiore in July. It is quite hot in this area in July and not much shade to speak of. Be sure to put on sunscreen before you go. Definitely bring your own water. We made the mistake of not beinging water and I ended up with heat exhaustion that day due to being severely dehydrated. They do not have water on the tour. You literally hike up the side of a mountain through the vineyard. There are stunning views of the town's countryside and ocean. The wine tasting is done in a little hut stationed on the mountain (or hill). Andrea is the tour guide. He is very nice and speaks English well. His family owns the vineyard. The wine is very good. We had three bottles between four people. We tried a white, red and rose. All were good. The directions you get when booking seem simple but are accurate enough to get you there. You have to take a bus from the town to the vineyard which costs 2.50 euro per person. I would recommend this tour but definitely bring your own water. If you can't climb up hill and go up some stairs without assistance then don't do this tour.

Great wine tour in 5 Terre
We really enjoyed our wine tour. The tour of the vineyard was great with our tour guide who explained in details the various steps and labour associated with growing grapes. Wine tasting was excellent. Overall great tour but we thought it was a bit pricey.
