What to expect
  • On the morning tour option, meet your private guide at your centrally-located hotel in Trieste or at the port to start exploring the city. To discover the roots of Trieste, you'll reach the hill of San Giusto, site of ancient Roman ruins, the medieval Castle and the Cathedral of San Giusto, which preserves stunning Byzantine mosaics and medieval frescoes. In the Lower Town, stroll along an elegant seafront and the Theresian District and be impressed by the beauty of Trieste's palaces and buildings, including the Teatro Verdi Opera House, the Stock Exchange Palace, the Greek and Serbian Orthodox chapels, and the imposing church of St. Anthony near the Grand Canal. Your tour will conclude in the splendid Piazza Unità d’Italia, Italy’s largest square overlooking the sea, where you can enjoy an Italian gelato, cappuccino or espresso. If you'd like to enjoy the afternoon tour, you will also meet your guide at your centrally-located hotel in Trieste or from the port. Then, hop aboard a private vehicle and drive first to the Risiera of St. Sabba, the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy. See the various parts of the facility that served as a detention camp for political prisoners and transit area for Jews, most of whom were deported to Auschwitz. Explore the museum, see the photographs and documents, and get personalized attention while hearing of the prisoners that suffered there. After touring the site, transfer to Miramare to visit the romantic residence of Maximilian of Hapsburg and Charlotte of Belgium, and its beautiful park. See its interiors featuring sumptuous original furniture and decorations and take a walk in its surrounding English and Italian-style garden rich in rare plants, sculptures and ponds. Enshrined in the coastal rocks, the Castle of Miramare also gives visitors the chance to admire the most enchanting views of Trieste and its gulf. Return to Piazza Unità d'Italia at the end of the tour. You also have the option of a full-day tour, which combines all the sites and activities of the morning and afternoon tours for a full immersion in Trieste.

Private Wine Tour Friuli and Nearby Slovenia - Outstanding!!
Sep. 2018 • Couples
We contacted Sonia to arrange a private, one day wine tour for two of us to Friuli and the nearby Slovenian wine country. It took a while for her to get back to us but, we were really glad we waited for her response, because she does and exceptional job. Knows the area, knows the people, has the right contacts, and was a real pleasure to spend the day with. She also helped us arrange a day trip from Trieste to the Istrian Peninsula and a tour/transfer from Trieste to Ljubljana and Zagreb with another good agency.

A Small Agency Providing an Excellent Travel Experience
Sep. 2017 • Business
My wife and I wanted to research Northern and Central Italy for books we are writing. None of the standard commercial tour organizations we searched provided the unique locations we needed to see. However, I was lucky enough to run across Discover Friuli during my search. They had tremendous reviews, so I decided to give them a try. I contacted Sonia Cos and gave her a summary of the type of tour we were looking for. My primary interest was in the WW1 battlefields of the Eastern Front in Friuli and Western Slovenia where part of my novel takes place. She did a masterful job of retracing the route of my main character through the 1916-1918 campaigns and booked our battlefield guide, Paulo. He was a passionate and knowledgeable historian, accompanying us on Mt. Sabotino and other battlefield locations of the Karst in Slovenia. Through her travel agency she arranged for all our rail travel from Paris to Torino, Asti, Venice, Rome and booked all our Italian hotels. The properties she selected were excellent and the guides she arranged in these cities were friendly and knowledgeable. I’m sure I could not have planned this trip as well on my own. Sonia’s customer centric focus made her a pleasure to work with. The trip Sonia planned was a wonderful and productive experience

Wonderful insights into a fascinating region!
Sep. 2017 • Friends
We used Sonia for three half-day tours in Friuli and found her to be an excellent guide.
We use a lot of tour guides in different locations around Italy (we operate small group tours of Italy from Australia and like using local guides to give our groups an expert, local insight in some locations) and based on our experience can really recommend Sonia!

Her knowledge of the region and all aspects of the culture in very thorough, her English is excellent and most importantly she delivers the information in a way that makes it highly engaging for the group.

Two day wine tour of Friuli
Jul. 2017 • Couples
As others have noted, Sonia Cos is an excellent guide: warm, relaxed, knowledgable. She was born and raised in the area and knows the history. She does not shy away from the history of carnage in WWI or the extermination of the Jews of Trieste.
We booked a two day wine tour but actually got a history tour as well.
The wineries routinely serve cheese, bread, and prosciutto along with at least five different wines.
We had a wonderful time.

Italian Cookery Course
Jul. 2016 • Family
Great Italian Cookery Course!
We booked for our 15-year old God-daughter to go on the cooking course at Rosina's Kitchen, and it was absolutely delightful. Rosina kindly tailored the menu to be vegetarian for our god-daughter, and the fun was actually cooking in her lovely Italian home, and then sharing and eating what was cooked in a traditional Italian way around the family table. Not only did we learn how to make pasta, pesto and panacotta – but also so much about the Italian way of life. The course was informal and fun, and very educational. We would definitely recommend the Discover Fruili company for organising tours or events, Sonia is such a lovely, friendly person. And of course we would definitely recommend the cooking course in Rosina's kitchen, it was excellent! We would love to come back and learn more….

Aquileia and Collio Wine Tour
May 2016 • Couples
Sonia arranged an excellent day tour to Aquileia and the Collio Wine Region for my wife, my son and Me. The tour was arranged by mail and Sonia was very punctual and flexible. She was very knowledgable about the history of Aquileia and was able to answer all of our questions. We then went to a very friendly wine maker in Collio where we had a short tour of their facilities and tasted some excellent wine. To end the tour Sonia took us up into the hills just across the border into Slovenia where the views and scenery were stunning. All in all this was an excellent day and very good value for money. We would thoroughly recommend a tour with Sonia.

one of the best tours we have had
Apr. 2016 • Couples
Sonia, is a fabulous guide. There is really nothing she doesn't know about this and other areas. She was very punctual, informative, friendly and flexible if we wanted to do something else. Our focus was on Aquileia and we did a day tour there. We also went to Slovenia and that was a great experience as well. We did a short tour the third day to Cividale, which was very interesting and we all went to her favourite restaurant for lunch where she ordered traditional Friulian food, which we enjoyed. We highly recommend Soni without any reservations whatsoever!

Excellent introduction to an overlooked region
Sep. 2015 • Friends
I contacted Sonia Cos of Discover Friuli to see if she could put together a one week tour for us of Friuli and surrounding areas. We are a group of eight Canadian book club members who love to travel to Italy every year. Sonia put together a wonderfully varied itinerary for us ranging from prosciutto tasting to grape picking, to wine tasting, to cooking lessons on the gastronomic side coupled with visits to ancient Roman sites and other significant historical locations. We also devoted two days for side trips to Slovenia and the Istrian peninsula.
Sonia put together a very well planned trip - we first stayed in Udine and then transferred to Trieste. This made it possible to minimize the amount of driving each day.
We can't say enough about Sonia's professionalism and extraordinarily informed knowledge of the local area and its history. In addition, she is also a very lovely warm person who speaks perfect English! Sonia is the perfect guide to this under appreciated part of la Bella Italia and we would highly recommend her.
