Andrea our guide was very good and so was the driver. We really enjoyed Pompeii and had a fastastic guide who gave us a lot of important context. That part was well worthwhile. We went in Dec and unfortunately it was so foggy that we couldn't even see Vesuvius from Pompeii, plus it was off season for Vesuvius so we took the option to go to Amalfi. If you look at a map it seems Amalfi is pretty close to Pompeii but it is not at all! Lots of slow, winding roads that made us carsick (not the tour's fault of course!) and we had less than 2 hours in Amalfi, >1 of which was lunch so didn't feel like we had enough time to enjoy it especially given the extreme amount of driving. It took 4+ hours to get from Amalfi back to Rome. Amalfi was pretty but if I could do it over I'd just do Pompeii and not make it a 13.5 hour day trip - too long.

My son and I booked this package for a day trip to Pompeii while we were visiting Rome. It is about a 2 hour drive from Rome to Pompeii so 4 hours totaly driving. Our tour guide, Angie, managed to make the hours fly as she entertained us with stories about Roman/Italian history, mythology, culture, tips and things to do in the areas we were heading, and more.
From the moment we met with our group we felt safe and entertained. Of coarse seeing Pompeii was fanstastic and we had no issues entering the ancient city and finding an audio tour. However we wouldnt have gotten half of the experience we had, had it not been for our guides knowledge of local places to go and food/drinks to try.
This trip was one of our favorite experiences we had in Italy. Cannot recommend highly enough for any lovers of history and anyone who wants to have insider knowledge on one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Our guide for the day Chiara was the best. She was excellent at explaining everything we saw along our bus ride to and from Pompeii. She was very kind and helpful. We are also grateful for Carlos our bus driver. We don’t know where he learned to drive, but he was amazing.

I went on the version of this tour that goes to Pompeii and Naples (winter). I do not think that this tour is worth the price, in part because it is falsely advertised. First, the posting (I booked on the City Wonders website, so it may be different elsewhere) advertises that we would be assigned a tour guide for the whole day. Obviously, I and the other participants took this to mean that we would have a tour guide in Pompeii. We were very disappointed as a group when the City Wonders guide told us that he would not enter Pompeii with us, and rather we would have a few hours to walk around by ourselves. I specifically picked this tour because of this false representation--in trying to avoid doing Pompeii without a guide--and in the end it was of course a big loss in experience and in value. Second, Naples. We arrived there at 2:15 PM and were told that we had to be back on the bus at 3:15 PM. We had not yet eaten lunch (some others in the group had, but we chose to use our 3 hours at Pompeii entirely on the ruins, which could easily take two days to see in their entirety). Thus, we were given a whopping hour to "see" Naples and eat, which ended up being us dashing to a fast food pizzeria, eating while standing up on the street, walking up and down about four blocks, and then rushing back to the bus. We didn't see Naples at all, neither on foot nor from the bus. The tour advertises a scenic drive along the coast, which is a mighty linguistic stretch. We saw the bay out the window behind some buildings for a few minutes by necessity. And then we were back in Rome at 6:15, more than an hour before we were supposed to be! So there was no reason they couldn't have given us more time in Naples. The guide had no answer for this. All in all it was a huge disappointment, especially because I have done another City Wonders tour before from Rome (Tuscany) which I really enjoyed. They seem to be extremely hit or miss, and I'd hesitate to book with them again.

Dear phonemes, Thank you for posting your review. We have carefully reviewed its content and we are sorry to hear that our tour didn’t live up to your expectations. At City Wonders we always try to provide the best possible service to our customers so it’s disappointing to hear that was not the case with your tour. On our website we state that our tour leader will be with you for the whole duration of the tour on the bus, but that the time spent in Pompeii is free time. I am sorry if you thought that this could be misleading. The itinerary of the tour and timings are to be respected by the guides. Sometimes there is traffic on the way back so we want to avoid clients coming back from the tour late. However, we have passed on your feedback to our Product Management team to improve our tours going forward and to ensure that other customers do not encounter similar issues. City Wonders regards feedback from our customers as invaluable, because it allows us to adapt our tours to be the best that they can be. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for taking the time to post your review. Kind regards, Federica City Wonders

I highly recommend taking this trip especially if you get Roberto as your tour guide and Gianni as your bus driver. Roberto was very informative, nice and vibrant during the tour, although, "we," the group were a bit lackluster due to just being tired prior to the trip. He gave us loads of information that you won't necessarily find unless you search for it specifically. The bus driver himself was cautious with his driving which was good for my nerves because it was long journey - cuddos' to him!

In any case we went to a tour in Pompeii where we met a guide named Melania - she was oh so lovely. Although it was a rainy day we went she did her best to give us the best experience we can get.

I believe city wonders choose only the best people for the job.

Thank you!

I’m obviously in the minority here, as 5 stars seems to be the norm. However, a few observations which led me to award only 4 stars.

Pompeii and the Amalfi coast are well worth the 7 1/2 hours you will spend in a smaller bus. The entire trip is roughly 13 hours, so this tour is pushing the envelope for a day tour. There is obviously good demand for this tour as our bus had the full contingent of 23-24 people.

As older travelers, my wife and I highly value bathroom breaks which were minimally adequate ( 1 on the trip down, & 1 on return).

Transportation is not on a full-size bus, so it’s somewhat cosy. I’m 6’3” so I’m oversized, height-wise. This is an observation only. If you’re larger than me, it might be tight for you.

The tour guide who accompanied us was good, (very friendly & informative) as was the guide for Pompeii.

My only other comment was that lunch was had when we reached
Pompeii around 2:15pm. It might be prudent to bring some snacks, although there were some options at the rest stops.

All in all, a nice tour if Pompeii and Amalfi are one your bucket list.

Mixed feelings about this tour. Everything was on time and well-organized as far as the meet-up and departure. We spent about 3 hours in Pompeii which I felt was too long. That meant we only had an hour in Naples and kind of had to rush through the 2nd part of the tour. Additionally, our tour facilitator “Angie” was very nice and friendly but it was hard to absorb the things she was telling us because she would jump from subject to subject very randomly. There really wasn’t a good flow or structure in passing information relative to where we were along the way. After a very long day and on the drive home when everyone wanted to rest she continued taking almost the whole way back which was kind of annoying. It was night time and they also had all the lights on in the bus which made it very hard to sleep. Overall, seeing Pompeii was an incredible experience and must not be missed on a visit to Italy. I felt the tour was a good value for the money and would have been 5-star had the aforementioned suggestions for improvement been implemented.

We always strive to provide the best possible experience by working closely with our Guide Management Team. Our apologies that this experience did not live up to your expectations. I have done many guided tours in the past but I have NEVER been satisfied as much as I have been with this one. Italy itself surely has many many things to offer but all these can mean so much more if there is a guide who knows how to present them to people's hearts. Emiliano is that kind of a person - 100 % professional, knowledgeable, organised but at the same time very easy going, patient and humorous. This tour guide even managed to turn a long bus ride into an amazing Rome-Naples-Pompeii-Vesuvius-Italy story telling experience and took his time for each and every one individual, giving us the the time to ask him questions. Consequently he was able to provide us with excellent tips regarding museums, food, transport, anything we wanted to know ... If it means anything, he deserves to be awarded. Greetings from Slovenia!
