Due to its massive size, tackling Pompeii on your own can be very tricky, even if you have a map. This Pompeii archaeological site walking tour is led by a guide who knows the grounds well so you won’t get lost. Plus, your guide knows the fastest ways to see the most important areas and tells you historical facts as you walk.
What to Expect

No matter how much research you have done, it will be not easy to visit the archaeological site by yourself. Pompeii is like a labyrinth and it’s very easy to get lost even with a map. So if you are planning to visit the ruins, the best way is to join a walking tour with an official tour guide.

The walking tour consists of a guided tour, shared with other participants (maximum of 25 people). The local English speaking guide will take you into the daily life of an average Roman town of 2000 years ago.

After meeting your guide, head into the ruins of Pompeii, as you listen to the engrossing narrative of how this once thriving city was destroyed in an instant from the massive amounts of volcanic ash and pumice that erupted from the nearby volcano. Walk through the Porta Marina, one of the city's original entrances as you learn how this place was rediscovered in 1748, and how it has been in a continual state of restoration ever since.

Highlights of the visit: the Forum, the baths, the temples of Apollo, Jupiter and Isis, the Lupanare (brothel), the frescoes and mosaics, the bakeries and of course the body casts.

Please note: This tour does not include entrance fees to the excavations.

Worth paying for an experienced guide

We didn't realise how little time we had to see this wonderful site - we will have to return. The best thing we did was to book a group guide for 2.5 hours to just show us some of the highlights with some background. The...More

We parked very close to the entrance just beyond the station in time for a 9 o'clock tour, so admittedly quite early, and there was no trouble finding a space.

Now that you've got the tour tickets, you just report to the site office at the main entrance and they will slot you in with the next available tour guide. They are very skilful and can easily guide a group of even 40 people... More
