Salerno was founded in the 179 B.C. and it has always played an important role for the commercial routes - being it settled on the sea – but it is only during the Medieval Age that the city increases its importance. In fact, ruled by the Sanseverino family, Salerno becomes an artistic and cultural centre, encouraging the development of learning centres and high intellectual environments.
Your professional guide will lead you into this pleasant walk through the streets of the historical centre. You will visit the amazing Cathedral, whose Dome was consecrated to the Pope Gregorio VII and dated 1084. As you will be shown, the original style of the Church has been changed during the centuries, but the last restoration has tried to bring it back to the original one. Peculiar of the church façade are the Byzantine stylish doors, and the marble covered walls of the crypt, which was believed to host the remains of St. Matthew the Apostle.
You will also pass by the monumental complex of Santa Sofia, whose neoclassical style is completely different from the Cathedral Romanic.
Climb the Arechi hill and admire the Norman Castle, built on the top of the hill to control and protect the oldest centre of Salerno: the walls of the city in fact, run all over the hill slopes, enclosing the core of the Medieval town. Listen to the legends and the story of the castle while reaching another incredible building: the Palazzo Friscione, that shows the signs of the different dominations through the different styles of the architectonic elements.
