About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- AubraeW0 contributions5 Star Experience!Would highly recommend booking with The Best of Basque as our experience from first inquiry to drop off at our ship was 5 star. We booked this private tour as a shore excursion for our day in Bilbao and it was fabulous! Zach was extremely helpful and responsive throughout the booking process, making recommendations based on our group members and timelines. He was also an excellent guide, providing local insights, history and interesting facts that engaged all group members. Everyone had a good time (and plenty of food!) and we arrived back at the ship with plenty of time to spare. We were delighted with our tour experience and are sure that you will be as well!Written 26 November 2024
- 214dawne0 contributionsAmazing private luxury Rioja winery tour!My husband and I just returned from an amazing trip to the Basque Country. The destination is unique in the world, and the food and wine alone make the trip worth taking. We had a special interest in visiting the Rioja wine region after hearing about the world class wines that have been produced there for almost a thousand years! Gratefully our research connected us with Zach and Irene, the owners of The Best of Basque luxury tour company. Their in-depth local knowledge and connections with the best and most unique wineries made for a really exceptional experience. With over 600 wineries in the region, you couldn't possibly do this on your own. We were picked up at the hotel in one of their spotless luxury vans and spent the next several hours being immersed in the beauty and history of Basque Country. After visiting three extraordinary wineries with personal tours and tastings, we were ready for lunch. Zach brought us to an excellent local restaurant where we experienced Basque cuisine, some of the best food in the world. We invited Zach to join us and thankfully he obliged. His passion for the food and ability to speak Spanish resulted in an unbelievable meal. I strongly recommend touring with The Best of Basque. They will surpass your expectations!Written 14 November 2024

She took us to five great Pintxo bars in the old town that we may not have stumbled upon ourselves, some of which we returned to later in our trip (they were that good). Our tour guide Irene was excellent and she took us to the 5 best places in Bilbao - ones we wouldn’t have found by ourselves. We sampled 10 generous Pintxos from traditional to modern and also the local wine and cider. We were also given a lot of information about the history of the Basque region which was really interesting. Thank you, Zach! You gave us a really good sense of the uniqueness of San Sebastián: the freshest products at the market, the beautiful Old Quarter, the bustling harbor scene and reknowned beach panorama. Our trip to Petritegi helped us open a new chapter in our appreciation of regional specialties. The tour and tasting of their cider were well worth it, and that traditional sagardotegi lunch was super. Our stop n Zumaia on the way back to Bilbao was a spectacular treat - hard to believe those stunning cliffs were once hidden under the sea...
We had a fantastic day! Thanks for your hospitality, your patience with the teen part of our contingent, and your enthusiasm about all things Basque. ¡Hasta la próxima!

We had visited both Bilbao and San Sebastian (Donostia) in the País Vasco (Euskadi) several times in the past and were looking to get something more this time.
Zach and Irene (who led our tour) were extremely helpful and flexible in helping us plan a full day tour that met all of our needs. Being "Game of Thrones" fans, we stopped at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and Itzurun Beach (Dragon Stone). Irene was very knowledgeable and helped us learn about the history and customs at each stop. She was even very accommodating as my wife took some extra time to do some GOT cosplay. We also stopped in Getaria (a fishing village featured in the film "Ocho Apellidos Vascos") for lunch. Irene knew all the best places and gave us valuable suggestions while still letting us make our own choices. It also was great that she seemed to know many people in town and helped us get a great meal at a great restaurant.
Long story short, their help and assistance was easily worth every euro and helped make this a perfect part of our trip. Their knowledge, friendliness and flexibility made their services invaluable. Even as someone who almost always prefers to travel and experience things on my own, I will undoubtedly go with "Best of Basque" on my next trip (hopefully the cheese farm tour!) and strongly recommend them to anyone who wants to make the most out of their trip to northern Spain.

My husband and I had an amazing day with our tour guide Zach. We had perfect weather to accommodate walking through St. Sebastian, a lovely little city followed by Getaria where we indulged in local wine and seafood right along side the fishing port. The tour ended with spectacular views of the coastal cliffsides in Zumaia. Zach was very knowledgeable in local Basque history. We learned a lot and the tour offers the perfect mix of walking and driving by through scenic routes. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel door step so there was zero hassle with transportation and Zach provided several recommendations for dinner spots in Bilbao. We highly recommend this tour for individuals or couples that want the personal touch from a private tour of the Basque countryside.

We did 2 tours with this group and both were excellent. For this tour, Zack picked us up at our hotel in Bilbao and led us on a full 8 hour tour. Even though it was a cool, rainy day, he made the best of it and we felt we saw everything we needed to see. He’s full of knowledge about Basque culture and history which we really enjoyed learning about. We toured the market and interesting streets of San Sebastián-including the site of the world-famous basque cheesecake (well-deserved). He also took us to a restaurant for lunch in the town of Getaria which is known for grilling whole fish over a charcoal bbq started hours earlier. The town is also the birthplace of Juan Elkano who was the first person to circumnavigate the earth in the late 1400’s.

This tour was great, we enjoyed seeing the Basque region and having stops along the way from Bilbao to San Sebastián. Zach picked us up at our hotel in Bilbao right on time and was very friendly and informative during the entire journey to San Sebastian with several stops along the way. We were able to include a tour of a winery which was a great experience. I recommend doing this if you want a leisure experience within the Basque region from city to city.

Well worth it, but book early because the hotels book out fast. Rest a car and drive around the residential areas and just go anywhere you want and you'll see a beautiful city by the sea. Of course, go eat "pinchios" or something like that, they are the famous open-faced little sandwiches right downtown. The place is famous. It's pronounced "PINCHOS" Drive up the coast to Hendaya and cross into France to Hendaye.

We had an outstanding day with Zach. He shared with us some of his favorite secluded spots on the coast. We had time to enjoy each stop and never felt rushed. Lunch at an out-of-way restaurant included a freshly caught and prepared fish. I was sorry to have the day end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Jani was an excellent guide, Basque from Bilbao who helped me understand the local history and traditions and culinary specialties. The drive was beautiful and we spent time in a number of lovely locations, with the highlight being lunch in Gertaria at The May Flower restaurant. I had the grilled monkfish paired with txakoli wine, which was superb. I highly recommend Jani and this tour.

Zach took us on a bus trip from Bilbao to hike up to Gaztelugatxe (need a good level of fitness for this due to the elevation change but highly recommend) and to San Sebastián for lunch. He planned out the day perfectly, keeping us on schedule, giving us input about what we wanted to do. He is very knowledgeable and could answer anything we asked. He would be great for any group, but specifically for Americans due to his native English speaking and cultural awareness - he was able to explain basque culture in a way we could understand. We had an amazing day with Zach - couldn’t recommend him more highly for any trips to the area.

It was actually a transfer day from Bilbao to San Sebastián. We worked with Zach to arrange a wonderful day of sightseeing. We started with an amazing wine tour where we really felt the passion for winemaking from our host. We then went to Guernica to experience more of an important moment in history and extend our understanding of a painting we have long admired. Next we explored Getaria and had a delicious grilled seafood lunch. Then on to Zumaia and its incredible scenery before we ended in San Sebastián. Zach shared a lot of information with us we felt we had a better understanding of the area and its people. He was very easy to work with and everything went smoothly and on time. Totally recommend
