Walking Tour of Berlin's Gay and Lesbian Scene

Vibrant, progressive and multicultural, Berlin has been a pioneer in the gay rights movements since the late-19th century. Delve into the city’s LGBT history on this 3.5-hour walking tour through the historical and culturally rich neighborhoods of Schöneberg and Kreuzberg. Visit one of the city’s oldest trans* bars; stroll through Tiergarten and learn about the LGBT figures who have shaped the city’s history; and visit the Gay Museum* (Schwules Museum*), the world’s first gay museum.
What to Expect
Explore the gay neighborhoods of Berlin on this 3.5-hour guided walking tour. Since the 19th century, Berlin has been a pioneer of gay and lesbian rights in Germany, creating Siegessaeule, the first lesbian magazine, and celebrating the annual Gay Pride event. Your professional guide will tell you everything about that time and how life has changed for the city's LGBTQ community.

Start your walking tour in the Schöneberg area and visit Eldorado, one of Berlin’s oldest and most famous trans* bars that once featured regular performances of Marlene Dietrich.

Find out how openly gay and transgendered people found assistance from the sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, whose Institute for Sexual Science was shut down in during World War II in 1933 and its library destroyed during the Nazi book burning. Then, visit the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism.

Continue your tour walking through the Tiergarten, the city’s best-known gay meeting spot hidden behind the Berlin Wall. Find out how LGBTQ figures have shaped the history of Berlin from the Prussian King Friedrich the Great to today’s openly gay Mayor Klaus Wowereit.

Finish your walking tour with a tour of the Gay Museum* (Schwules Museum*) in the vibrant district of Kreuzberg, considered one of the world's first gay museums.
