What to expect
This half-day excursion begins with a tour guide meet and greet at your Munich hotel or München Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station), the main railway station in Munich. After boarding a train there, it’s approximately a 30-minute ride north to Dachau. The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site was the first Nazi concentration camp in Germany during the Holocaust. It served as a model for all the other camps that followed it. See the photographs, documents, reconstructed cell blocks, crematorium, administration headquarters and much more on a tour of both the camp and museum. Find out little-known facts about the Nazis linked to this site, like Heinrich Himmler, and listen to the stories of some of Dachau’s 200,000 prisoners—communists, German dissidents, gay men, and Jehovah’s Witnesses, as well as Jewish and Polish men and women. This private tour is a customized experience, so be sure to include any specific requests and feel free to ask the guide questions at any time. After touring the site, spend some free time exploring the museum. Then, return by train to Munich.

    Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site
    Stop: 2 hours
Meet your guide at Munich Central Station or your centrally located Munich hotel, then take a train to Dachau where a bus will then transport you to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. During the Third Reich, Dachau was referred to as the ‘parent camp,’ serving as a training ground for the genocide to follow. A staggering range of persecuted people were sent to Dachau — including communists, German dissidents, gay men, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jewish people and Polish citizens — upward of 200,000 people were imprisoned here. Today the camp stands as a memorial site with many of its original features serving as reminders of a time in history that should never be forgotten. Explore the site with your guide, and see the gatehouse with its Arbeit macht frei (Work makes you free) gateway, bunker and the crematorium. You can also visit the administration headquarters and see the rail platform where prisoners once arrived. As you walk around, listen to your guide give the background on each site, learning about victims and perpetrators whose names were linked to the camp. Heinrich Himmler helped set up Dachau, and used it as a place to train the SS ("black shirts") guards. If there is something you would like to know more about, simply let your guide know. After exploring the camp, take some free time to browse the museum if you like, and then return by train to Munich Central Station.

Tour of Dachau
Feb. 2020 • Couples
My husband and I were spending a day in Munich before flying on to Norway and Iceland in February. We decided to take a tour of Dachau, but our plane would arrive in Munich too late for any of the group tours to the camp. We chose to do an afternoon private tour with Nuremberg Tours. We had flown overnight to Munich and knew we would be up most of the night and the day we were in Munich and having to deal with an early flight out the next morning. We were staying at a hotel close to the airport, but we were to meet our guide at the train station in the city center. This was quite a distance from the city center and the best way to get there was by train. We asked Jason if we could meet our guide back at the train station at the airport because we were unfamiliar with the train system there and would already be very tired. Despite the fact that he had to go well out of his way, Jason, the owner of the tour company, agreed to be our tour guide and meet us at the airport for the afternoon private tour.

He was a history major, so knew so much about the city and the concentration camp. He allowed us to take our time, answered our many questions, and gave us a sobering, but memorable visit to pay our homage to all those that suffered there. I highly recommend Jason’s tour company. If you are lucky enough to get him as your guide, I am sure you will walk away from any of the tours he offers feeling like you have a greater insight into the history of the area.

Dachau and the trip there
Jan. 2020
My 15 year old daughter and I booked this tour online. Our guide was on time, very kind and friendly. I can't say the tour blew us away. I felt like we had to ask all the questions to get the info versus being told the high points. Our guide was a trooper as we got caught in a down pour of snow and it was cold as $#!*. Our biggest complaint is that during the tour of the museum, there was absolutely nothing pointed out or commented on (except the bathrooms). We felt like the less was said, the faster we could leave. I would still recommend the tour for sure, but it don't expect the best

Our guide, Achim, was well-versed in his knowledge of the historical events regarding the war and the Holocaust, and we were rapt with attention, as though we were students in a class! As he explained everything, it was as though he'd been there. Throughout the Dachau concentration camp, he pointed out things we would have missed and elucidated about things that broadened our perspective. Achim treated Dachau with great respect as it is a place of intense sadness and horror. He was focused, passionate, and very well versed in the historical facts of the place, as well as interesting anecdotes of other German sites we'd noticed on our travel to Dachau.

A very powerful tour. Brendan was outstanding. The knowledge that he transferred was informative and timely. We enjoyed our conversations with him greatly as it relates to Dachau and other topics. Parts of the tour left me and my family speechless. It is not a fun tour by any stretch, but a visit that everyone visiting the area should make.

Bummer!
Sadly we planned our entire Europe trip around visiting Dachau as my 20 year old enjoys history. From the beginning Jason was rude and uptight even though it was a few minutes before 9 he barked at us about being ready to go and being on German time? Huh? For $400 US private tour he should be more patient especially when our docs said meet at 9. He never bothered introducing himself to my daughter. He seemed almost annoyed that we wanted to see Dachau. I agree with prior review. Jason’s knowledge was adequate but he offered nothing more than what the boards offered at each site. He has no enthusiasm whatsoever. We could have read the boards and learned just as much. Jason did get us to Dachau via train and bus so that part was helpful but knowing what I know now I would have gotten myself and my daughter there on our own. Get there as soon as it opens pay for the audio guide or just read the boards at each site vs this tour. Also, the tour says half day but we were done at 11:30 so that’s 2.5 hours including travel time. We ended up staying at the museum
For another few hours on our own because Jason assumed we didn’t want to see the museum. Other guides were in the museum with their clients giving interesting info throughout. Museum
Is a must! Dachau definitely worth the trip but not with this guide!

Very sorry you were disappointed in the tour. You have been given a full refund. I also agree the tour was not the best. However, I don't bark and this is a tour by train. The guide cannot control the train schedule. I'm sorry if I came across as abrupt at the beginning but if the tour does not leave on time then we have to take a later train. This fact seemed to greatly upset the customer. When the customer said that she felt extremely stressed out by starting on time, I immediately offered that we take a later train instead. The customer then said that it was too late for that now because she was already stressed out. She also informed me that she had paid a lot of money for this tour. Since the customer seemed quite upset, I then offered the customer a full and immediate refund if she did not feel this was going to be the right tour for her or was unhappy about taking the train. She then said that she was doing the tour and didn't want to be "screwed". I know it was not my best tour, but is difficult for a guide to give an enthusiastic tour to a customer that seems to be waiting for the tour to end so they can write a one-star review and demand a full refund. Which is exactly what happened. I offered repeatedly to take the customer through the museum. For some people the museum is a vital part of the visit, but about half our customers choose to skip it so I offer it as an option. The reason the tour finished around 11:45 (we were standing by the bus stop, the 11:46 bus was there) is that the customers asked to be left at the memorial and would see the museum on their own. This particular tour ended after around 3 hours because the customers did not want the guide to take them through the museum and did not want the guide to take them back to Munich.

Visiting family in Austria

Dachau was quite an experience. We started with the documentary which puts one immediately in the picture of the atrocities all concentration camps are famous for. The "museum", put up in the rooms that housed the German officers was also in line with the documentary and very informative. The place itself is quite impressively large, but the "barracks" which housed the prisoners did not do justice to the horrifying experience of the prisoners. This could have been due to the fact that they had been rebuilt from scratch and the smell of "new" wood was not in line with the "history" of the place. It was a different experience when one came to the place where dead bodies were burned, and the gas chamber. The latter, with its low roof was quite claustrophobic. But knowing that it had never been used, gave one a sense of elation in this place from hell.

Excellent tour. Our private guide was outstanding and answered all of our questions. Let your camera rest on this day and just take it all in. It is very serial and will leave a lasting impression on you. Everything is original there and well preserved.
