What to expect
  • This full-day island tour begins at München Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station in the city of Munich. Travel by train to Bavaria’s largest lake—Lake Chiemsee—home of one of King Ludwig II’s elaborate homes, Herrenchiemsee Palace.  This lavish castle is located on an island in the Chiemsee. Admire the incredible backdrop of majestic Bavarian lakes and mountains. Head inside for a guided walking tour of the large staterooms: the State Staircase, the State Bedroom and the Great Hall of Mirrors, plus the king's own rooms in the intimate Small Apartment, designed in the French rococo style. The palace is extravagance at its finest, with elegant gardens and walkways and ornate interiors of gold, glass, and porcelain. After the tour, take a boat ride (own expense) across the lake to the island of Frauenchiemsee, the second largest of the three islands in the Chiemsee. Explore the island and be sure to stop at the historic Benedictine convent, which dates back to the first century. The tour ends with a return trip to Munich.

Wonderful Herrenchiemsee with students
Jul. 2019
Our day trip to Herrenchiemsee was so well planned and professionally guided, I was extremely impressed, ans so were the 19 teenagers I was taking on this trip. Great job to the office staff and guides alike. Don't miss out on a tour with Radius: Hassle-free planning and great memories!

Oh my gosh Josh!

Very nice trip to Herrenchiemsee with the big castle! Fraueninsel a.s.o
Interesting history, beautiful area and the weather was perfect!
Our guide Josh did a great job even thru the group was from many different countries.
The Chiemsee-Bahn and ship was fun!
On the way back the boat was a bit late and we had to run to the steam locomotive, and then again we had to run to catch the overcrowded train from Salzburg back to Munich. On the train there was a lot of men with lederhosen and fun german accent..
All in all a very good day in beatiful Bavaria! Thumbs up for Radius Tours and Josh!

Beautiful setting
Jul. 2019 • Solo
I booked the tour expecting to take the train with Radius Tour but, it was combined with a Salzburg tour via bus. A little disappointing. The tour guides were great entertainers, John and James were great. Lots of walking, great boat ride (extra cost), beer was refreshing, met lots of fascinating fellow tourists.

Too bad there were no trains and no reason for that.
Jul. 2019 • Solo
We got on bus instead of trains. Too bad. No alternatives, no options, no explanations. Patrick was a wonderful guide, he is a huge Ludwig II fan and you can feel it. And the weather was fantastic. Only drawback is that due to the bus versus train exchange we got much later back in München and I had to cancel my evening plans. Train is mostly ontime and you can keep schedules. And the Salzburg people who were on the bus had an extra delay for the diverted route passing by Prien. So my complaints go only to the Radius coordinator. The guide was superb.

Excellent tour, wonderful guide - so highly recommend!
Jan. 2019 • Friends
So very much enjoyed our Hitler and the Third Reich Munich Walking Tour. It was great to see the sites, but not only see, hear and learn about the history of each site. People walk by these structures and you see it in a whole different light knowing the history. When visiting Munich, this tour is a must. The tour starting at the train station near our hotel (arthotel) and took off from there. Michael O was an absolutely amazing, wonderful, informative, patient, and friendly tour guide - definitely an asset to the company. He was so knowledgable, well paced, excellent tour guide. If you can request him, definitely do. It was great that he held up a tablet with historic pictures on the tour to compare history to modern day. He answered all questions with great knowledge and intelligence. About a 2.5 hour tour. If you have the time, this is a must!

Stunning and intriguing

I really enjoyed this day trip to Herrenchiemsee due to the amazing view from the lake and stunning inside of the Castle. The Fraueninsel perfectly completes the scenery with a touch of authenticity. Our guide Patrick knew how to captivate us with lots of insights about Ludwig II and was extremely friendly and communicated his enthousiasm for History.
This is a very nice trip to escape from Munich for one day and learn a lot about Bavaria's History.

Very beautiful and cool
Jul. 2017 • Family
Seems like Whilhelm was a pretty bad ruler who bankrupted his state and never completed many of his castles.... but he is well remembered for it, so maybe he gets the last laugh.

This is a palace that was modeled after Versai in Italy, and you can really see the similaritiies. It is beautiful especially the fountains and the completed portions.

A large portion of it was not completed due to Whilhelm's death and lack of money, but seeing even the incomplete part is very interesting. I recommend the trip. The ferry ride over is fun too.

History, nature and food
May 2018 • Couples
We had a great day with our guide Austin who introduced us to Ludwig II, his life and his fantansies. We not only discovered the extragant palace on a beautiful island but we also had a fancy meal in a quaint little hotel facing the Chiemsee Lake. This is a full-day tour but since it is divided in various activities (walk in the park, visit of the castle, ferry ride to a second island to taste regional food), it goes by quite easily. We recommend this tour to anybody who wants to learn more about Bavarian history just an hour outside of Munich.
