Perhaps I should have researched this trip a little further before booking. Interesting at the beginning as the boat entered the first few locks but after a while it became boring as we went through lock after lock and saw very little of the beautiful city. As the boat entered the Seine we were able to view and hear about some of the iconic landmarks of Paris. Of the 2.30 hrs only 30 mins was spent on this final stretch of the trip. Perhaps a Seine cruise would have been a better option?

We really enjoyed this canal cruise... It was very different to the river cruises. The tunnel section was cool, and the locks and canal were also nice. I know they can't make the locks section any shorter, but it did get a bit samey after a while. Would still recommend though

We booked this tour on Viator and were interested in seeing sites other the key ones along the Seine River which is why we booked the option with the canals. In all honesty, the only cool part of this tour was what we saw along the Seine River as when we were in the canals it was just a bunch of locks (9 to be exact). Oh and you go through this tunnel which is cool to think about but it is pitch black and you don’t see anything. Plus we never even went as far as the eiffel tower so got no good pictures of that. Nothing wrong with this company but I would just recommend a tour that is primarily the Seine River.
For us, I would rate the tour as a 3/5, however that is our fault for not doing our research in the first place.

This was a great way to see areas of Paris that are off the regular tourist trail. We took the tour from the Parc de la Villette to the Musee d'Orsay. The canal locks do take a while, but it was nice just to relax after lots of walking in Paris. Bruno was an excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable and able to fill time when we were sitting in the locks. It was a bit hard to hear him on the top deck, but that is normal - if you want to hear the commentary, I recommend sitting below deck. The tunnel through the Bastille is particularly cool. Near the end of the tunnel, make sure you get on the top deck and look behind you and up, and you'll actually see a window inside of a building overhead!

We were looking for something different to see in Paris and found the Paris canal and river tour. The amount of time (2.5 hours) seemed about right so we decided to try it.

It was a great introduction to canals that we had no idea existed in Paris!

Bruno our tour guide kept up an amazing running commentary in French and English providing lots of interesting history.

The views of Paris from the canal boat were very different especially going under part of the city on the canal!

This tour is well worth the time if you aren't familiar with the Paris canals and are looking for something different to see!

Boring boring boring. It took almost 4 hours to get through the locks, but after the first 3 we were done. The tour guide was unintelligible. He just droned on from a memorized script. I absolutely do not recommend this. Take the autobus and skip the canals

We did the 2.5 hr St Martin Canal tour ending on the Seine and booked through the company's website from Australia. All the boarding directions were clear and we had no trouble finding the boat at the dock.
What a beautiful excursion! Travelling along the canal, observing local life, hearing the excellent commentary in English / French and being able to wander around the boat to take photos at leisure was the the perfect way to see Paris life in the 20th ARR. The vibrant art, outdoor restaurants, beaches, play and exercise parks along with houseboats and the 'locks' experiences provided superb views and memorable images to keep.
One of the highlights was definitely the tunnel section passing under the Bastille. There are circular light wells positioned along the tunnel which gives eerie illumination to the water below and which add to the uniqueness of the canal experience.
Exiting the canal into the Seine was a light-bulb moment - coming from a quaint residential canal environment into the magnificence of the huge waterway with its views of historic architecture, glints of gold statues and varieties of water craft.
So glad I searched for 'unusual things to do in Paris' and found this tour!
Observations which may be helpful - bring water/snacks; the boat trip along the canal is slow so that you can observe everything along the way; there are fuel fumes at the back of the boat which intensify during the tunnel section.

Unless you like spending over 2 hours on a dirty canal, with no sights, this tour is not for you. The last 15 minutes on the Seine are ok, but not worth the over 2 1/2 hour trip.

Dear Matt Q, Thank you for sharing your experience ! Apparently this experience was not as good for you... You are right, we spend 2 hours on the Canal St Martin and 30 minutes on the Seine. On the Canal you did not see the 9 locks ? the amazing vault with the skylights ? the famous North Hotel ? (actually that's what we explain on our website, on the brochure...). If you read the news or watch TV (and I am sure), you must know the situation in Paris with migrants ...that's why the Canal is not very clean...It is very sad for them, for the tourists, and also for the parisian people. Next time I really advice you to choose a service which is supposed to pleased you, as well as check the news... We really hope to see you again when the situation will be better, and only on the Seine. Best Regards, Marine

From what I see on Trip Advisor, most people loved the excursion but they did not like the slow pace. Well its up to the traveller. If you want a fast moving boat, stick to the main riverways, if you enjoy more of a "stroll" along the river and like taking time to really see and observe your surroundings, you'll enjoy this trip. The 20th ARR has undergone extensive revitalisation yet still keeps its charm, as evidence of the beautiful artwork (yes its by graffiti artists but it's better than what I've seen in Modern Museums at home.
There were miles of outdoor patio restaurants and beach activity for the locals including their own 'Muscle Beach' a outdoor gym. Yes, there are quite a few locks where the boat stops so the water can raise or lower the boat for the next sector of the canal. Our guide was very animated, however, his English was heavily accented. This did not bother me. I pretty much did my own research of the area and the history of the canal and its transformation--The thing is, it was a mostly French crowd, in a French town (c'est la vie) its was all part of the charm and you just went with it. It was a very jovial atmosphere and you could roam around the boat. Move about (fore or aft) to take photos and everyone was having a good time.
Personally when we got to the Seine, the boat sped up and it was like a spell was broken. Lastly...everyone talks about it on Trip Adv. the tunnel was REALLY cool!
p.s. the bathrooms(toilets) were clean and tidy and I would definitely go again, perhaps combine it with dinner as it was so pleasing.

Experienced the operation of the lochs on the canals, see Paris street culture and travel under the Bastille. The guide was very informative and gave a French and English commentary. A very relaxing afternoon and lots to see around the canal basin.
