- X5049CQmarkm0 contributionsA Second Wonderful Day Exploring Donegal CountyThe Coast and Castles tour was our second day tour with Joe. We enjoyed the South Donegal tour so much and were excited about traveling with Joe again on this tour. Joe picked us up in Donegal Town and before heading out, we pulled off to see the most incredibly carved, large Celtic Cross. Second stop was to be Grianan Aileach, an ancient stone fort, built up on a hill with an incredible 360 degree view of the beautiful surrounding landscape. The fort itself is so unique and the scenery has to be seen to be believed. From there it was an interesting drive, with many twisty roads, to reach the Fanad Lighthouse. The lighthouse if beautifully maintained and has incredible views out to Malin Head and the Ocean. They have a really cool virtual reality film about the sinking of the HMS Saldanha, which crashed off the coast. You can climb the stairs up to the top to see the views. From the lighthouse it is a bit of a drive to Glenveagh Nation Park, so we stopped for a view of Doe Castle from across the lake, so that we would have plenty of time to see the Glenveagh Castle and some of its gardens. The Castle and the views from it and around the gardens are well worth seeing, again fascinating history. Thanks again to Joe for a second fantastic day exploring Donegal, this time the north and central part of the County. More people really need to see the hidden gems of Donegal County!Written 25 October 2024
- Pilgrim4840 contributionsBrilliant experienceThis was an amazing experience, that we booked during a cruise ship visit. The music and dancing was brilliant, and the hosts and performers were really friendly and welcoming. I’d recommend this for any visitors to Killybeggs.Written 27 July 2024
- hishdh0 contributionsPrivate TourBooked a private tour around Donegal in search of relatives. Joe Greene proved a highly informed guide through Donegal who went well out of the way in search of sites associated with family who immigrated in the 17th century. After family search spent a most pleasant day touring ancient ruins, Columbkille sites, and into Derry. Joe was totally open to all suggestions and did everything possible to make the day memorable. The car was new and very comfortable. If you value personal service and local knowledge, Chieftain Tours is perfect for you.Written 20 July 2024
- sdhey_al0 contributionsComprehensive tourOur tour guide Joe was extremely knowledgeable of the history and areas we visited. The amount of time at each destination was appropriate. We traveled in style in a private luxury passenger van. Highly recommend 10/10!Written 17 July 2024

- davidmI3894GL0 contributionsExcellent experience with Chieftain Tours!Joe Greene of Chieftain Tours is simply outstanding! He is gregarious, funny, smart and very creative! We had a personal tour of sites in Donegal and Northern Ireland. He speaks Irish and seems to know everyone! Very knowledgeable. If you are in search of a challenging walking tour of Ireland's sites, Joe is #1 ! He easily climbed up steep inclines at the Slieve League Cliffs and the Giant's Causeway which made me jealous! I strongly recommend him if you want an interesting, informative and engaging tour experience. He can customize a tour to fit your interests.Written 30 May 2024

- X2292XOkennethm0 contributionsUnbelievable Donegal areaAll I can say is " Maureen exceeded our wildest expectations". She gave us an insight to the area that only a proud local could. Thank you Maureen, we will always remember our time with you! Ken and Martha BostonWritten 15 May 2024
- MeganR80 contributionsGreat Guides and ExperiencesJoe and Maureen were amazing - knowledgeable, easy going, and SO patient with the very challenging group of non-listeners/non-readers. It would have been miserable to be stuck with those folks on most excursions, but Joe and Maureen kept things going so we all had a good time. The mini bus is really nice and allows the tour to drive all the way to the top of Sligh Lough…bigger buses have to have guests transfer to a shuttle or walk. They somehow arranged things with the Rusty Mackerel to have everyone order and be served in record time, and the food was excellent. The monastery and castle were great and very well explained as well. We’ve been on many cruises to many places, and this was among the best excursions we’ve ever done!Written 11 May 2024
- Z136CElisag0 contributionsA delight! We recently stopped over in Killybegs and decided to go see the music show. It was a short 10min walk from our ship to the center of town, where the venue was located. The venue is in a nice room in the local hotel and is fully accessible which was important to us. The show itself was great with some traditional Irish music as well as a ballad singer and some great Irish dancers. After the show, we had a coffee in a nearby cafe which was suitable named "Ahoy!" Bus tours are not usually our thing, so this was a welcomed treat. Would recommend.Written 22 April 2024
- Quest889510 contributionsFabulous EntertainmentThis was a wonderful experience, the music was fantastic, powerful ballads by such a great singer, the dancers were amazing and the location of the venue, the Tara Hotel was perfect, only 10 minute walk from the harbor. I would definitely recommend it.Written 17 April 2024
- peonies16060 contributionsMusic show KillybegsSuch an exhilarating experience. Omg, what a great show. Had such an amazing time and was a really enjoyable couple of hours, spent amongst friends! The music and singers where top class. Even though the musicians where phenomenal, the dancers are what made the experience for me. Highly recommend, great way to spend a few hours on your visit to Killybegs.Written 15 April 2024
- Go559626168060 contributionsPerfect balance of city and country sights, a lovely day!We had a wonderful time with Sean on Chieftain tours. His smaller tour buses (but still very nice!) allowed us to go places the larger tour buses could not. We saw many of our ship board mates waiting for shuttle busses to take them from the lower parking lots to the top of the cliffs, while we were able to drive up ourselves. The place they picked for lunch was amazing, including wonderful entertainment. The tour was well organized, and I felt we spend just the right amount of time at each of the activities. Highly recommended!Written 24 October 2023
- brendagT3106MX0 contributionsGreat tour with a great company!!We booked this at the last minute as our ship had a major change in itinerary due to weather. Once booked we rec'd a note from Chieftain with all info on the coming excursion. I did have questions which were answered same day. We were in it for the cliffs but I was very impressed with the presentation of the Abbey and Castle. Our tour guide was very well spoken and knowledgable. He had a great sense of humor too. We had some time to roam town and shop. When we stopped for lunch we had THE BEST seafood chowder ever!!! And to top it off our guides came in and recited poetry and sang!!! They were AWESOME!!! What a personal touch!!! Unfortunately we never got to see the cliffs due to the mist. Our guide did bring us up to try but the mist won. I still feel the tour was very worth it even though we didn't get our views. Thank you so much to Cheiftain!!!!Written 19 October 2023
- Donna85530 contributionsCastles , Cliffs, History !Our trip was amazing . We saw a castle in Donegal. A beautiful little town. Lots of shops and a historic Franciscan Cemetery. Delicious treats with Cappuccino’s. Lunch at Rusty Mackerel with lots of fun with Irish songs and lots of knowledge from our tour guide Keith. He is a famous writer straight from Donegal, his home town ! Then off to see the cliffs . Amazing day !Written 18 October 2023

We had a wonderful day with Joe on the South Donegal Tour as our driver/guide/friend; full of history, folklore, amazing scenery, seascapes and landscapes and craic. He shared his knowledge and many stories, making stops along the way to share the beautiful county of Donegal with us. We visited Donegal Abbey, Killeybegs Harbour, the Slieve League Cliffs, where we saw a rainbow (we actually saw 5 that day) and the Glencolmcille Folk Village Museum. All were very interesting and Joe's knowledge and stories brought them to life. It was nice being able to drive right to the top of the Slieve League Cliffs as it is a long walk up and it was a blustery day up there! We are so happy that Joe was available to spend the day with us, we now have a new friend in Ireland! Thanks so much Joe, until we meet again!

This experience is a five star WOW! As we toured the beautiful countryside, Joe took us on a memorable journey of Ireland's history, traditions and folklore. We learned plenty of facts and figures, but even more, we loved the stories that made the past come alive. The day was filled with adventures exploring the ruins of the abbey in Donegal and the breathtaking cliffs of Slieve League, visiting a local weaver’s artisan studio, a secluded windswept beach, a quaint folk village, and so much more. We ended the day with a deeper appreciation for the Irish people, their music, language and culture. Thank you, Joe!

We had a wonderful experience exploring the beautiful country side of Donegal! The views were spectacular, the journey was exciting, but most all the best part of the tour was our guide Joe!
He went above and beyond in explaining with such eloquence the history of Donegal, Ireland, and shared with us his expansive knowledge about f the language, culture, and customs of his home town. He even displayed his musical skills and tried his best to accommodate every one of our requests.
Would highly recommend and maybe one day will see him again!

We couldn't have asked for a better guide to kick off our experience in Donegal. This was our second trip to Ireland, but first to Donegal, and Joe made the experience so fun and very rich in Irish history. No matter where we went (Donegal Abbey, Donegal Castle, Glencolmcille Folk Village, Slieve League Cliffs, Joe knew everything (and everyone) and has made me dig further into my Irish roots since we came back (the O'Connell Dynasty, The Plantations, The Annals of Ireland.) We wanted the real version of Donegal and all the Irish history we could absorb and we got it so thank you Joe, you are awesome. We would highly recommend Chieftain Tours and will look to engage them again, when we return.

We had Joe as our tour guide for South Dongeal. Joe was very knowledgeable, he knew the history of Ireland and you saw his passion about Ireland as it showed in all the places we visited. He also spoke to the native language of Gaeilge which was a plus as we got to experience his interactions with the locals! The tour was “NOT scripted” as Joe related personally to everything he told us. Joe was very adaptable as we started late due to travels and he also made time in the schedule to take us to the prettiest beach in Ireland. Additionally, we loved our experience at Slieve League (Europe’s highest Sea Cliffs). We thought the Slieve League Cliffs are so much better than the Cliffs of Moher!
We would definitely hire Joe again!

I agree with the others. Chieftain Tours provided an exceptional experience in planning and executing our day.
I'd tried to work with someone from a high-end travel service before finding out about Chieftain Tours. The original company claimed to be "bespoke". Turns out it was just super expensive with disappointingly sub-pars service. We are grateful for the memorable day we spent with Keith, courtesy of Chieftain Tours.
My son and I are still talking about our tour, the unique things we got to do, the gorgeous weather that enabled us to see things other tourists might not be able to enjoy, Keith's patience in letting us wander around Slieve League and beyond, and most impressively, his personable conversation and knowledge of history, people, poetry, and lore that made it such a rich and wonderful experience for us.
By the end of our tour, Keith knew us and our interests well enough to recommend additional points of interest.
Can't thank him and Chieftain Tours enough for the magical day. I've already recommended them to a family friend!

We had an incredible day traveling around Donegal with Joe! He provided such a great balance of sharing the history and the natural beauty of Donegal. He is clearly passionate about Donegal and his love for the place shined through during the tour. He also adapted the tour to include things we hoped to do and see. The day with Joe was one we won't forget! Kudos!!

Great tour - saw areas that we could not have traveled to on our own, and our guide knew a lot about the history and current economy of the area. He took us to the abbey site we had previously visited, but we learned so much more and understood its significance. While walking through the re-created historical village, he knew what many of the tools were and how they were used. He showed us the fishing port and boats and talked about that economy. Of course we saw the gorgeous countryside and coast, including the cliffs of Sliabh Liag. This was the high point of our trip to Donegal.
