    Very entertaining
The performances were 1st class and the stories of Scotland's darker history were very interesting. It's worth the admittance fee. I would recommend this to anyone paying a visit to Scotland!!

An interesting place but a little inconsistent
Great atmosphere, mostly well acted and performed with audience interaction - some actors were very quiet so difficult to hear them. One in particular (at the Robert the Bruce part) was a bit rude in his attitude towards us. This is our second time at the experience (last time was in 2020) and the experience this time seemed a lot shorter and didn't have the ride at the end so was a little disappointed.

    Ok-ish
It wasn’t as good as it was 5 years ago. The actors were good but always picked the same people. The graveyard and plague sections were quite boring and the ride was broken so it ended on a low.

    Not my cup of tea.
Overpriced, haphazard jamboree of dull, disjointed amdram piffle. Staff worked hard to deliver a turkey of an experience. Avoid, like the plague.

    Great fun!
Came as a group of 4 adults last week, what great fun! The whole experience from start to end is very well done, lots of interesting facts and special effects. The actors were fantastic too, really made the experience what it is. Had a good laugh and a few scares along the way, and the drop ride at the end was unexpected but great. Would come back.

We had fun and enjoyed the trip. A dungeon is not the Place to gain really historical knowledge but to get a feeling for, therefore and for My students it was cool

    Dissapointed
Went in was really looking forward to it but had about 30 people herded in one dark room due to a "technical error"got fed up of waiting and more people herded down started to feel claustrophobic,so asked for a refund was told you will only be waiting another ten minutes but no one told us there would be a wait due to a fault on entry as I could have then decided wether to do the attraction or not ,hopefully going forward people will be told first hand if there's an issue

    A skull load of fun
This was a spooky experience as while we walked through it was funny and scary they will not touch you if they do it is an accident and you can’t touch them you will have skull jars of fun and you have a gift shop this is an amazing experience and definitely recommend

    Worth it!
We booked a timed tour online on the day that we were visiting. Paid less for a ticket and walked straight in. We loved the dungeons! The actors were really enthusiastic and funny and it was a good level of scary for us. Part way through the tour we had to ask to use the toilet - the actors were really helpful showing us out and helping us to rejoin the tour we were on. If you are someone that needs to know you have an exit, there are actors in each room who can help you at the end of their scene if needed. Great, fun experience, glad we went.

Ohh crikey, this was terrifyingly good!
As part of our Scotland holiday we had four hours in Edinburgh. Research beforehand suggested Edinburgh Dungeons as one of the more interesting places to visit. So after we'd done a city bus tour we turned up at the gates not quite sure what to expect. The entry cost was quite high - £26 per person - and I wondered if a few rooms of dusty exhibits was going to be worth anything like that. But... I was more than a little wrong!!! Wow, this was more fun than actually being able to fly. Without giving too much away - as no photographs are allowed - we enjoyed a 100 minute adventure which was utterly brilliant. The many, many rooms were beautifully created to appeal to the horror genre (but perfectly acceptable for 12's and up I reckon) with comedy elements too. Each room was populated by a 'guide' or 'guides' who took you through a marvellous creepy adventure with more surprises that you could shake a skeleton at. In fact it was like seeing a theatre show presented in different compartments, but a show you were intimately involved with. It was superb. many congratulations to the creators and actors who made this so much fun. We had a brilliant time and, believe me, it was very much worth the money. (PS. Favourite actor from the many great performances on show was the animated skinster on plague street. Superb. He was a character inhabiting the past.) Wonderful. Thanks & best wishes all.

    Ruined by a disgruntled manager
Disappointing visit. We had a great group who were trying to get into the swing of things. After about ten minutes a lady came in and introduced herself as a manager and told us that everyone was being too loud and said something else about comments towards the staff. This was very bizarre as no such things happened. Really killed the mood and experience for the rest of the tour which was voiced by many of the people in the group. Wouldn't return or reccomend after this experience

We went on a Friday night and waited outside with numerous others who had booked the Friday night adult only ticket. Stood there for ages and nothing! Nobody opened up! Really unhappy as not only wasted our money for tickets but time we could have spent doing something else! Still waiting for reply about refund!

Hello Noli48, I am very sorry to hear what happened. Our Edinburgh Dungeon Lates are every two weeks instead of every Friday which is where the confusion is coming from. If we were to change anybody's ticket time or date we would email or phone ahead of time to let them know. Please contact us either through our Facebook page or our email address edinburgh.dungeon@merlinentertainments.biz for a refund.

We decided to do this event on our last day, whilst whiling the time before our flight and I am so glad we did. As other reviews have mentioned, at first, I thought the price was a bit steep and was unsure if it would be worth it, but I was proved very wrong! The performers are excellent and very well made up. The 'rooms' are so theatrical and atmospheric, they submerge you into each murky tale and give you plenty of scares and laughs along the way. I was surprised by how long the permances went on for which certainly made it well worth the entrance fee. I will certainly recommend a visit to anyone wanting to enjoy an immersive experience for over an hour, whilst learning some dark history. Absolutely excellent, well worth a visit.

The actors and costumes are terrific but I think it could have been bloodier and more gory with special effects. The venues were really good and allowed some respite albeit outfitted with some trickery ! I also liked the sets. I felt safe as far as seeing the exits etc. The sets are terrific. We also liked the gift shop with an unusual and affordable selection of keepsakes and trinkets. Really loved the notebook, the pen, and the eletronic rats - there were really good touch!

Hello, thank you very much for the review. We are pleased that you enjoyed the sets, the performances and even the gift shop! We would love to be scarier and have much more blood and gore, we do still want some kids to come in ( and leave without too much trauma), and cleaning all the blood for the sets is a real pain!

Had a great visit, lots of laughs, scares and everything else until we got to the last part with the drop ride - the lady there was so rude with the way she spoke to us all. There was a family translating what she was saying and she was so rude to them. I was standing beside them and they weren’t talking loudly or distracting me from hearing her safety instructions (which I fully understand the importance of this). When we went through to the room with the actual ride she was so rude again and gave us a row for not having our backs right against the wall. I had asked her if there was somewhere to put my bag and she bit my head off! After the ride the man who came to guide us out was equally as rude and spoke to everyone like they were stupid! It’s such a shame as that was the lasting impression of otherwise a good day! The other staff were so entertaining but unfortunately they were not! At the photo part someone brought their phone out and the lady who had taken the photos earlier in the visit nearly jumped over the counter to see their phone which they clearly hadn’t taken a picture with! It was over the top, so rude and uncalled for. The family were speaking Arabic and didn’t really understand what she was saying but she was going off her head at them. Sadly spoilt the day!

Hello EmmaLS13, sorry to hear you didn't have the best of time here at the Edinburgh Dungeon. As you can see most people do have a scary/fun time with us, however we aren't for everyone. The Drop Ride is one of our main attractions and we do need everyone to listen to the health and safety rules when they are spoken. I understand that the actor may have been seemed a bit rude however they might have not known the person was translating, and maybe thought they were just chatting amongst themselves. The whole "backs against the wall" line is another safety procedure put in place so people can take off any lose items safely and not jump on the ride immediately with potential dangers. The reason we ask people to turn there phone's off at the start of the tour is to stop any potential disturbances during the tour and the possibility of someone recording anything that goes on, including taking pictures of the pictures our photo department sells. I realise that these issues you raised could have been handled better by our staff and we thank you for your valued feedback.

I am a big fan of horror tours and attractions. So maybe I had too high expectations. I have been 3 times I think, with friends .
Edinburgh Dungeons is a kind of comedic and slightly dark humoured tour that tells you about the plague, and Burke and hair and guy gawkes etc.
I think the best part of the tour are the actors who are fairly talented for the majority. I wouldn’t recommend this place to people who have accessiblity needs or Athena due to loud noises and flashing lights, and dust .The special affects are decent.
I would say that over £20 for an hour and a bit is quite expensive and not really worth it. When I came here the first time it cost £14 which is a bit more reasonable . I was not told when I had booked and there was no sign saying that the boat ride was closed which was a shame as that’s one of my favourite parts . I wish that they could update some of the attractions or make some new things and take out the more boring rooms. Also there is some seaying but for most of it your standing so be aware of that for accessibility too. The staff seem nice but weren’t happy when I told them I didn’t want a photo of myself being beheaded as I don’t want my picture taken. They tried to slightly pressure me into getting it done but I said no thanks and they said I could go straight through. So yeh this is an averagely okay attraction but is a bit expensive for what it is.

Hello Alexrussell13579, Thank you for your 3 star review of us. I am sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations when it comes to scares, we are a more family friendly horror history tour. The Boat Ride has been gone from the attraction since 2019 and as such, has been removed from all our social media and advertisement. We also don't have a character called " guy gawkes", perhaps in the London Dungeon. Over the past few years we have upgraded a number of our shows and even have a new one at the moment called: Robert The Bruce - Uncover The King Apologies for the photo team being a bit forward with the photos at the beginning, they are still optional so no one should feel pressured to have then taken. Thank you for your feedback.

Took my two boys here as they had a great time at the London dungeons. Had an equally good experience here, staff were very engaging in their performances and really got both the kids and adults involved. Our eldest boy was picked twice to take part in certain parts of the tour and he had the biggest smile on his face whilst taking part. You could tell that the staff were passionate about their jobs and enjoyed getting screams and laughter out of their audience. Would recommend to anyone with children who don’t scare too easy! Its a little pricey for a family of 4, but hey what isn’t these days? Keep up the good work!

I took two teenagers who are hit and miss on what they like. We all had a BLAST! Whenever people ask how our trip to Edinburgh was, this is the first thing they bring up. It was just a fun time. One of my kids got scared a couple of times, but it's mostly just funny and informative. It's very interactive, and the characters were fantastic. If you're in Edinburgh, this is a must do!

Arrived early ,but no problem for the helpful staff who seamlessly attached us to the group who were just starting. The whole experience was excellent and very professional. Very scary for my nine year old grandson. The staff in the shop were great to, the quality of the photos offered is very good, we took the £20.00 package which gave us one print and five photos to download. The staff create your image in a number of scenes from the attraction. All in all a very good attraction.

Staff on kiosk were extremely rude and unhelpful and did not want to give a student discount, despite me showing student ID. As I was with family I ended up paying £26 for the most abysmal show. Complete waste of money and the full price ticket added to the disappointment. Students, steer clear, not even worth the £15 ticket advertised on student beans.

Hello catherinestevenson1. We are sorry to hear you didn't have a good time at the Edinburgh Dungeon, as you can see most people have a scary fun time with us however we aren't for everyone. All student tickets must be booked pre arrival via the student beans app. This is the case with all discounted tickets as we do not have the ability to discount tickets on the tills. This is the case across all Merlin Attractions. Standard tickets are cheaper online as booking in advanced gets you a small discount making them £24 and tickets on the door are £26. We also do other discounts with various third party websites and vouchers too (which also need to be booked online before visiting us).
