About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- KatSchrodinger0 contributionsBrilliant kids day outA really good day, so much to do! Lots of walking, lots to see, some great half term entertainment! Kids had a fantastic time going through tunnels and we got our exercise in just getting around!Written 16 February 2025
- 134Martin0 contributionsLunch at he CafeDover Castle itself is brilliant. So much to see and do. Allow more than one day. Had lunch in one of the cafes. Veg soup with bread and quiche with veg & pots. Enjoyed this although the soup was lukewarm & could have been served hotter. Noticed on leaving that there was a "communal" microwave tucked away by the condiments so maybe that's what you're expected to use to heat up the soup.Written 13 February 2025
- Glynis980 contributionsRarely available Dumpy tunnel visitWe know the castle well and only went for the rare opportunity to visit the Dumpy level tunnels built in the 1970s under the older Wartime tunnels. This visit is not often available and I learned about this Nuclear fallout shelter in the late 80s when the first tunnels were opened but we were told they could not be visited. There was a group of about 20 of us. We went down in the lift and were taken around by Sally and her colleague who were both of them, knowledgable and enthusiastic. As it is only open on a very few occasions there is not much “stuff” to see as it would be a waste of resources but I found it weird enough being in that enclosed space for just an hour. Imagine if you had been there as destruction rained down outside and had no idea what was going on with life above as you knew it. Friends, family all destroyed. And no news. What an awful thing that would have been. And to an extent. What would have been the point of surviving a nuclear attack? That was the point of this visit really. The futility! A bit like nowadays really if it actually happens…Live your life everyday as if it’s your last. Made me appreciate the lovely sunny day when we got back outside again at the end!Written 2 February 2025
- newshoun0 contributions'Dumpy' dis appoints but there is much more to explore.Dover Castle in reality is a 2 day explore. The 'Dressing Station' at Annexe level (Top level) is 20 min tour of the hospital in WW2. Certainly worth a visit. The Casement (Mid level) was the base for 'Operation Dynamo' the Dunkirk Evacuation in May / June 1940. Lots of exhibits and original equipment to see. A must see. The 'Dumpy' level (Lowest level) was in most recent times the Regional Seat of Government during The Cold War ( in reality did it ever end). This is only open a few weekends each year but you must pre book. Sadly the tour only shows around rooms and tunnels mostly devoid of any original equipment.(unlike the Dynamo tour) If you are really interested in 'Cold War' history a trip to thr RGHQ at Kelvedon Hatch or RAF Holmpton or Scotland's Secret Bunker is a must. 'Dumpy' left me slightly dis-appointed if Iam honest but there is so much else to see at this historic site.Written 2 February 2025
- thewanderingmeatball0 contributionsAll day adventureAwesome all day adventure with a ton of things to check out. The castle is really cool and they have an awesome kids playground as well. There are some cool exhibits and an underground tunnel section. They also have some WWII tours centered around Dover Castles role in the evacuation of Dunkirk.Written 1 February 2025
- helensims610 contributionsCheck winter opening timesStaying in Folkestone thought I would come into Dover and have a day in the castle. Unfortunately they had gone to winter opening times. Only open at the weekend and I was only staying mon to fri so missed outWritten 13 January 2025
- Adventure7178000 contributionsAmazing visit - imposing, beautiful and interesting. Highly recommended.Amazing visit. Dover Castle is imposing from the distance, beautiful and interesting inside. We particularly enjoyed the special tour we took of the middle level of secret tunnels guided by an extremely knowledgeable volunteer - and with films - describing the role of the tunnels in WWII and how thousands of British soldiers were saved.Written 6 January 2025
- Z5233BTchrisk0 contributionsA wonderful day visit! What an amazing site! I had no idea this place is as big as it is! It's quite a hilly place so walking for me was a bit of an issue. That said, the site has a mobility bus which saved the day! The cafe and food was a delight as were the staff who couldn't have done more to help! What a credit they are to English Heritage! Covering the extent of history that it describes, there is so much to enjoy for people of all ages - but especially if visitors have any links to WWII experiences!Written 1 January 2025
- debbiem140 contributionsWorth a visitEnjoyed our visit, with plenty to see and great views from the castle. The walk through the tunnels was very interesting. Only disappointment was when we stopped for afternoon tea. The scones were disgusting and had either been frozen or were several days old because they just crumbled as we cut into them.Written 31 December 2024
- spyvspy0 contributionsLet down by foodDo not eat at the NAFFI at the castle. Food was cold (xmas dinner) Staff need serious training . Cleaning tables should be proactive not having to ask staff. I wonder how they manage when its busy I dread to think.Written 23 December 2024
- Peter H0 contributionsNeeds a big management shake up. This could be such a fantastic experienceThis a case of listening to the reviews posted here. The average reviews are accurate… but no action has been taken so you wonder if the management are listening r reading. Change the management. This was an experience I have been waiting for years. This is a jewel in the English Heritage crown and should set an example. Things to change. I loved the castle. Open only at weekends in the winter results in overcrowding. Children are bored of these types of history and become a distraction for other visitors. 2/3 days opening during the winter weeks would help. Completely rework the tunnel tours The Tunnel tours were just rushed processions in one end out of the other. The guides only spoke at the start. You couldn’t ask questions or get a real feel for the atmosphere. Dunkirk story has been told so many times in different formats. But little or no explanation of the role the tunnels played in that story. The hospital tour, we just walked through the operating room walked past the wards. Told there was interesting graffiti but it wasn’t pointed out to us. There is so much more to be told. How did the tunnels look with plaster on the walls a section could be recreated. The complete absence of information boards. Especially in the Keep. Agree on the catering expressed by other reviewers. There is so much more I could say.Written 30 November 2024
- W1402DSjohnh0 contributionsGreat sight but join English Heritage otherwise ridiculously pricedAn incredible sight with history going back to the Romans including Saxon Church, massive Norman Castle and 19th and 20th century fortifications. Well worth a day, the Dunkirk exhibition and tribute to Bertram Ramsey were particularly highlights to me a real hero of WW2. Only issue price joking English Heritage is the only way get any sort of value for money. Even as a foreign tourist - this and for example Hampton Court, Battle Abbey, Deal and Walker Catkes or St Augustine’s Abbey would pay for itself on a holiday. As a one off entry fee it is ridiculously priced £100 for family!Written 22 November 2024
- Jennifer B0 contributionsAmazingFantastic fascinating place to visit. So much to see and do. The tour guides were brilliant. I could have easily spent another day here. If you want to read and see everything, make sure you have a full day there.Written 4 November 2024
- Bargeegirl0 contributionsGreat historical day out. This castle is so huge. Last year we did the tunnel tours, but this year we focused on the outside areas and the views. There are so many levels and different views each time. The castle itself is also immense, with lots of hidden rooms. Staff and volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly. We spent the whole day wandering around and still didn't see everything. The only downsides were that the signage around the site is not great and second the tea shops pack up very early. A great family day out though.Written 2 November 2024
- Relax286659349690 contributionsAbsolute shamblesWe took our two young grandsons for the Halloween event and it was a shambles from start to finish, feel like cancelling my membership. First problem was being sent to a muddy car park a long way from the entrance…I have mobility problems and found it very tiring going up and down the hills. The few staff in duty were not in control and cars were parking anywhere. What was more annoying was that while we were in the castle grounds the normal car parks were opened up to anyone. At the entrance the staff were rushing people through and the programme of events the lady who checked tickets gave me was not in with the information leaflet .Consequently we had no idea that there were things going on inside the castle and went around doing the quest looking for the Halloween characters.Service in the cafe was incredibly slow with people like us who wanted snacks being made to wait in a long queue with those waiting for hot meals. The boys had completed the quest and wanted their stickers but when we went to the exit the booth was shut with the stickers firmly on the other side of the window…this was at around two so should still have been manned. Why in earth were there no signs ?Very disappointed in English HeritageWritten 29 October 2024

Fantastic place, one piece of stone, carved from the mountain. You have to see the roof level with lions and garudas. There are another 32 caves fully decorated with Buddha, Shiva and Vishnu statues of stone.

my wife and i visited the castle in august 2019, we thought it was a marvellous place, plenty to see and do. there are quite a few steps to climb and quite a bit if walking. ( there is a free bus to take you from one area to another. very bouncy.)
we vistited to tunnels used in world war two, i went to the top of the castle (fantastic views). if younare coming here, allow a day to see everything.

You get access to some of the "must see" but a lot of the things we wanted to see was not included. I would highly recommend that you find out what you really want to see at see if you can safe money - we didn't.

Bought the 1 week pass for my wife and I for our trip to Cornwall. We were able to use this exactly zero times all week as nothing was open the week we were there. English Heritage, and I would say many other tourist type options as well, shut down in January. Would have been nice of the EH people to let us know that before we bought the pass. Oh well, nice donation to keeping sites open.

I had friends visiting from abroad so we bought two 9 day passes, which were excellent value for money. With the cost of Stonehenge, it only took another couple of places and they had paid for themselves.
The only problem is that you do have to plan carefully, particularly with the London sights which strangely have shorter opening hours than those in and around Stonehenge. Apsley House is, for example, closed two days a week, Chiswick House is only open between 11am and 3pm on weekdays and Marble Hill House is only open between 10.30 and 3.30pm on a Saturday. It makes planning very difficult if trying to move from one to another. We never made it to either Chiswick House or Marble Hill House.

I cannot overstate the joy and value received in joining both the English Heritage and National Trust each and every time visiting the UK (for an average of approximately two months) over a lifetime. I believe my next trip will be number eight. For under one tenth the combined cost of these two passes, we average minus 90% in admission costs via savings while driving to a vast number of amazing sites all over the UK. We'll be back and load up for late summer - fall 2020 for our usual four to five thousand mile trip.
- Fudged on the last visit date slightly to get this in but given the facts I'm sure it's understandable under the circumstances.
Best deal ANYWHERE. Period and Exclamation Point!

we purchased th 16 Day Overseas Visitor Pass and ended up using it well over twenty times for sites ranging from Cornwall to Norfolk to Cumbria. We got hundreds of pounds worth of value out of it and would highly recommend buying one.

Loved the stones, they are beautiful and you get a real sense of history when you visit. I recommend getting there right on 9 and getting the first shuttle up to miss the crowds. By 10am the place is so crowded you can’t really enjoy them anymore

This was a worthless expense. Most of the good attractions are National Trust and English Heritage was useless. I was not able to use this in the better attractions which all seem to work with the National Trust.

What an Amazing castle. I have visited many all over the UK and Europe and this is definetly one of my favourites. The old Roman light house is particularly special as there are so few intact Roman structures left in the UK. Great views and the kids very much enjoyed themselves. Well worth a visit!
