Overview
Learn about the 'uncomfortable' side of Oxford - imperialism, discrimination, elitism and a long history of conflict. Our tours are run by students from the university with the goal of creating more discussions about difficult histories. Participants learn about Oxford's historical connections and modern approaches to global debates still ongoing in the world: repatriation, reparations, decolonisation, breaking class and gender barriers, and the people who have been left out of the traditional stories of the city. Uncomfortable Oxford was founded by Oxford University students as an intellectually engaging alternative to the general tours of the city. As historians, we have researched and designed tours which encourage engagement with topics which are often uncomfortable to talk about.

This walking tour was informative and thought-provoking. At each location stop, our guide gave a description of a different issue from Oxford's past, all of which relevant to today's world and yet rarely discussed. Input from the group was welcomed and encouraged, making for a

Hello, I took part in an Uncomfortable Oxford tour last month as part of the Oxford Open Doors events and would highly recommend any of these walks. I undertook the walk comprising the general 'dark' (!) topics and hope to take part in the others during my next visits to

My family and I were invited on this tour by my brother who lives in Oxford. We’d been on a more traditional walking tour of Oxford the day before and had some insight on parts of the city and colleges. With Uncomfortable Oxford, our tour guide brought us around the city,

I went with a friend who was reviewing the tour for The Oxford Student. Oxford has a very rich, and often very dark or 'uncomfortable' history and it's so important this history isnt forgotten. If you really want to know what Oxford is like behind its shiny facades this tour is

I would highly recommend the tour, which gives an insight into important aspects of Oxford's history that are often not discussed. The guide was well-informed and very engaging, and the focus on discussion was refreshing (and much less uncomfortable than it might have been!).
