- X1102PJpaulac0 contributionsYork is great for messing around on the waterI must if visiting York - everyone driving these boats, including my group, were smiling. Easy to drive and great fun. Suggest booking for the whole hour rather than half an hour - you see more and its not much more to play. The time goes quick when having fun and you will be sad when its time to moor back up.Written 3 March 2025
- kevinelliott20150 contributionsCity Cruises cancelled due to high water and wouldn't reschedule another date.Book a self drive cruise in York via Groupon, on the morning of cruise we got an email from city cruises saying that due to high water it had been cancelled, very frustrating as I'd booked the day off work and taking the grandkids. We accepted it as we thought another date would be available going forward. When i did ring city cruises to book another date i was told that because my Groupon had expired I'd have to contact them for another Groupon voucher number, i explained that it was city cruises who cancelled the original date and not Groupon. But they wouldn't accept this and i lost the money paid out to Groupon which was redeemed with City Cruises. Very annoyedWritten 26 February 2025
- Glasshoughton0 contributionsFish n chips river cruise at YorkIt was a gift from my daughter in Australia....it was a lovely trip, fish n chips were delicious and really hot. the staff were lovely too, giving us a commentary about York,as we cruised down the river, eating our fish n chips.....and washed em down with a lovely cup of teaWritten 4 February 2025
- Kerry F0 contributionsWonderful experience for lasting memoriesTook my mom for a day outing with a lunch. Booking was user friendly, when I called for confirmation due to bad weather, they were very helpful and thorough , answering all of our questions. On the day, we were greeted and made to feel extremely welcome, fish and chips were served promptly and it was piping hot, like we had just bought it out of the kitchen. Food was excellent quality 👌 Tour on board was so lovely and informative, we were super relaxed and soaked in all rhe beautiful winter views. All in all, it was a wonderful experience to make memories with my mom.Written 13 January 2025
- ljcox910 contributionsDon't bother45 minute festive sightseeing cruise.. spent 20 minutes waiting for a mulled wine (wouldn't have bothered but was part of ticket price) and basic shop bought mince pies. Guy behind the bar miserable and obviously frustrated at the slowness of the mulled wine machine.. didn't seem in a festive spirit. Not much to see and commentary not all that informative. Wished we would have spent the money on something more exciting. Shame because we love Christmas and this was our first York trip.. really disappointed and not exactly cheap.Written 13 January 2025
- Artwriter20210 contributionsA thrilling time on the water! It was so thrilling to navigate along the River Ouse, the same river that brought Vikings to York back in 866 AD. We were able to explore the river and the beautiful city in a new and unique way. The timing couldn’t have been better as a day earlier I’d completed a revised copy of my novel Scott McNally’s Mystery, a tale of three children who set out on their own nautical adventure. Once again, I felt that thrill powering up the throttle and looking at what seemed like an endless expanse of water. I’d love to own my own boat someday so I can explore as well as write. Perhaps when I retire?Written 22 December 2024
- carolyncG4088LI0 contributionsAwfulBooked the Santa experience cruise with my 2 boys - it was awful. Crowded, badly planned, unable to see the lights/views of the river & surroundings due to the windows being so smeared and steamy. Gifts were rubbish for the ages. Santa was poor quality. Overall a stressful and unpleasant experienceWritten 14 December 2024
- JohnnyBeeTravels0 contributionsFestive Sightseeing CruiseHad a lovely family trip on the festive sightseeing cruise. We found every member of staff to be really friendly, welcoming and very professional. It’s very relaxing to sit in the boat which has been decorated for Christmas and listen to the mix of commentary and festive music. A mince pie and hot drink is included and overall it’s great for getting you into the Christmas spirit.Written 9 December 2024
- Odyssey4333110 contributionsSanta cruise 🎄🎅🏼A really lovely evening watching my grandchildren smile and enjoy the magic of Christmas. Cold wet and dreary evening but a warm friendly welcome and a nice sparkly area to wait before boarding. Unfortunately due to the weather and the river being high the boat could not sail, there’s no way we’d fit under the bridges. We were informed via email during the day and again on arrival so good communication. The kids didn’t notice, Pete the skipper was really friendly and welcomed families on board. We were shown to our table, the boat was nicely decorated and our table had a gift bag for the kids and a hot drink and mince pies and chocolate. All the Elves, Twinkle, cranberry & north were friendly and engaging with all the families. I would think maybe 60 people aboard, this felt just about right, watching the delight on my grandchildren’s faces when Santa and his sleigh ‘landed’ on the roof made my day. Santa himself was fun, engaging and recognised when to be loud and when to be gentle in his approach. I would have loved to have maybe sung a few more Christmas carols maybe something for next year? The crew Heather & Finn were helpful and friendly, serving drinks and snacks and made sure we left the boat safely. I made a point of noting down the crews names as It’s been a difficult weekend in York for attractions due to the weather and a lot of places have had to shut, these guys did a great job on a wet and windy night!Written 7 December 2024
- annepN8902PI0 contributionsDon't bother!!!If I could give this trip no stars I would. We had booked online for the 11.15 tour but on arrival was told there wasn't one at that time and to come back for 12 o'clock. The boat was very cold, the staff lacked enthusiasm, the windows were so misted up we could barely see, the mince pies were cheap, mulled wine too sweet!! As for the sights and commentary- poor!!! Probably the worst city tour we've been on!!!Written 23 November 2024

The boat trip was excellent, the crew on the ground were helpful and friendly, Sophia’s commentary was just right.
Our only negative comment is that we didn’t get any information about how to get to Kings Staith and where best to park. As a result of this lack of information we had to change from our booked trip at 12pm to the 1.30pm. Luckily our plans allowed us to do this and City Cruises could accommodate us, otherwise we would have lost our money

The trip was fun, the guide was informative and the ship driver was entertaining. Would recommend going on one of these City Cruises to anyone after something to do in York for an hour or so, that's both relaxing, informative and entertaining. The price at £15 is a fair one.

If you want to see the city from a different angle and have a little commentary along the way, then this might be for you. It was our first visit to York, so we booked ahead, not really knowing what the weather would ve like but from reading, I understood that most boats have both an indoor and outdoor seating area and some with a bar. Our guide/driver was very good, without being too talkative and boring, gave details and points of interest we could see at certain stages of the cruise, including details of floods the city has experienced previously.
2 x adults cost £28, which I think was decent, or you can choose to hire a small boat for £35 for half an hour, but you won't get the commentary or find out interesting facts.

Fun and friendly staff with fantastic knowledge of the area. Our Skipper Andy, was hilarious and incredibly knowledgeable about the area - we came to York for my fiancé's birthday and wanted to get a lay of the land so we hopped on the cruise for a reasonable price and it couldn't have been a better move! The boat is equipped with a bar and card machine to make the hour trip extra enjoyable.
Not to mention, the team even asked if we had any announcements to make so I mentioned it was my other half's birthday and they did a shout out and a free glass of prosecco!
Highly recommend this trip if you're new to York.

Perfect excursion for a family group, ranging in age from a baby and toddler, to parents and grandparents.
We boarded the boat with a large double pushchair. The staff boarding the passengers were so helpful and welcoming, the pushchair not an issue at all.
The 45 minute cruise took us up and down the Ouse, with the captain providing a live informative commentary on the passing scenery and buildings.
I had ordered 4 glasses of prosecco in advance and there was a good choice of drinks and snacks on board, served by a lovely helpful girl.
I would say the duration of the cruise was the right timing for small children. Our toddler grandson really enjoyed the boat experience.
We did this trip on Good Friday, and it was lively without being rammed with people, which can be the case on ank Holidays. It was also good value for money on a day when some attractions hike their prices.
The staff were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble. Well done, City Cruises.

I booked the early morning cruise which was 10.30. I was sent an email that we would be boarding at 10.00am and disembarking at 10.30 which didn't happen. I understand that it was raining but we were waiting 45 minutes! I phoned the cruise company only to be told that it would be going ahead between 10.15 and 10.30! The timings are all wrong they need to let people know that the boat comes at 10.30 and that you do not board it until after 10 .30an!
The boat ride starts off well but did tell my family members not to expect much as you can't see much over the tail tress and shrubs surrounding the River.
Overall the cruise could be improved by getting timings correct especially when it rains!

Absolutely appalling. We booked in advance but received a text message at 8am on the morning of our ‘cruise’ to tell us that there was a regatta taking place that day and so the usual route would not be followed. I don’t know much about the canoeists of York but I expect that they would struggle to arrange a regatta in three hours and so can only assume this was arranged some time beforehand and that they perhaps gave some notice of it. There was no warning of this when booking and no opportunity for a refund….which we obviously wanted, given what we experienced could only be described as ‘a go on a boat’.
The ‘sights’ comprised: some people’s houses, bushes…a LOT of bushes, a couple of bridges (personal favourite pictured) and some other boats. There was the opportunity to watch a Labrador chasing a stone on a little beach but this experience is available for free elsewhere.
You could also ‘enjoy’ a hot beverage at the ‘bar’ if you like drinking out of grubby mugs that look like they might just belong to the staff.
If you’ve never been on a boat before or would like to relive your youth by feeling like you’re on a really rubbish school trip, please feel free to part with your money. Otherwise, I’d recommend you go for a little walk and actually see some of beautiful York.
Oh, and each of my emails to the good people of City Cruises has been completely ignored.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with City Cruises York. We appreciate all feedback, both positive and negative, as it helps us to continuously improve our services.
We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the late notification regarding the regatta altering the planned route for your cruise. We understand this frustration and are taking steps to ensure more timely communication regarding schedule changes in the future.
The cleanliness of our vessels is a top priority, and we regret to hear about the condition of the mugs offered at the bar and have addressed this issue with our staff.
As for the "go on a boat" experience, we acknowledge your perspective. Our scenic cruises focus on the tranquility, history and views of the River Ouse and surrounding areas, but perhaps this wasn't quite the adventure you were after. We do offer more exciting options, like our Fish & Chips Cruise.
We value your feedback about the lack of response to your previous emails; I can see this was resolved and your email has been responded to.
We strive to provide exceptional experiences for all our passengers. While we fell short of your expectations on this occasion, we sincerely hope you will consider giving City Cruises York another chance in the future.

Unbelievably bad. Just got off the boat. 45 minute cruise of which 10 minutes was taken picking up other passengers from a different dock. The captain told us about the best view to the minster literally as he sailed past a gap in the trees! No time to get the camera ready before it disappeared. The rest of the very short cruise was a few bridges and a tow path. Could have walked it quicker and cheaper. Limited information about the city, basic out of the guide book stuff. Zero value for money.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent City Cruises York experience. We are sorry to hear that your cruise did not meet your expectations.
Regarding the captain's commentary, we apologise that you did not have enough time to capture the view of the Minster. We will ensure that our captains provide more advanced notice of such opportunities in the future.
We understand that you felt the cruise was too short and that you could have walked the route more quickly. While our cruises offer a unique perspective on the city from the water, we recognise that this may not be for everyone.
We value your feedback and will use it to improve the experience for future passengers.
Thank you for your time and for choosing City Cruises York.

Andy was a good skipper and guide but the tour was a bit lacklustre there isn't much "sightseeing" you can just about see the top of York Minster and that's about it, you head out of town the only thing to see is some shrubbery on the way back just the same. Not the guides fault just don't think it justifies the name "sightseeing" or the £26 price tag for two people. You'd see much more with a stroll around the city on foot. Pretty disappointing.
