We visited for all of the amazing reviews of the place but were disappointed and heartbroken to find the place to be poorly maintained, dirty, outdated, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, the poor animals exhibited signs of stress, anxiety, and distress. The tortoises were confined to a tiny

Response from Bird K, Senior Animal Care Supervisor at Bird Kingdom All Day Admission Ticket
Responded 3 days ago
Thank you for visiting Bird Kingdom. I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your time. Bird Kingdom is a CAZA-accredited facility and this organization consists of professionals that ensure every aspect of animal care is held to a high standard. This includes all aspects of husbandry as well as regular veterinary care related to each species. In addition to our CAZA accreditation Bird Kingdom participates in voluntary inspections by the OSPCA and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Bird Kingdom receives more than 500 donations enquiries a year but can only provide homes for a few. One of these areas is the Encounter Room where many of our reptiles and parrots can be seen; these animals have been donated to us from pet owners and rescue facilities. All of Bird Kingdom's acquisitions and depositions follow the ethical standards and policies set forth by CAZA and are reviewed by the Animal Care Committee to ensure we can provide the best quality of life in captivity for each species we take in. We do promote responsible pet choices so as to help curb the number of donation animals. The tortoises had come with pre-existing pyramid growth on their shells that can be caused by lack of activity, inappropriate diet, poor lighting, etc. It is also irreversible. Our tortoises have basking areas and UVB lights to provide them with the lighting they require for proper heath. They also receive daily enrichment which often includes time out of their enclosures for exercise and, during the warmer months, time in natural sunlight. Our diets for all species are reviewed by our veterinarian and nutritionists from other accredited zoos to ensure the most up to date nutritional information. Parrots constitute our largest number of donation inquiries. We receive four to ten donation calls a week. Our parrots are fully flighted and can choose to fly at any point. However, most of our donated parrots have never flown before and it can take years for them to attempt it. The ones that do fly live in the spacious main aviary. We are not sure what parrot you are referring to that showed signs of feather loss. It is true that signs of feather loss with parrots can be concerning but is often natural molting behavior. Parrots, like all birds, molt, and molting often coincides with the seasons, migrations, or reproductive cycle. Besides replacing old or damaged feathers, molting also helps to regulate a bird’s body temperature during the winter. Some of our parrots have been brought to us with FDB (feather destructive behavior) issues and in some cases this can become a habit and can be difficult to break. With patience, time, and training some of these behaviors may be reversed. Our parrots can choose to come out and/or participate in any of our animal interactions we offer. They receive daily enrichment, which includes destructive toys, foraging items, music, training, flight training, etc. The heath and safety of our animals is our number one priority. The design of each exhibit allows us to properly clean, disinfect, and maintain to ensure the health of not only the animals but also the staff and public. Many areas are attended to before opening but you can still see our staff at various times cleaning and feeding throughout the day. In regards to our plants, it has been a trial to learn what plants work within our environment due to the special circumstances of our facility. Our plants exist primarily for our birds. They provide nest building material, enrichment and shelter. We would like our plants to look perfect but it is very difficult to prevent the birds from being destructive towards them as it is a natural behavior for several species. The birds collecting nesting material and their large amounts of fecal matter can be hard on the plants. The vegetation in all areas of Bird Kingdom is attended to by our horticulturalist. Plants, just like animals, have life cycles and shortened daylight hours cause leaves to drop and some plants go dormant for the winter. Leaf litter is left behind to use for enrichment for the birds and is cleaned up weekly. Bird Kingdom strives to inspire our guests to learn about the animals, wise pet choices, and understand how important conservation is to the planet. I hope you will visit again and speak with an animal care supervisor. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Thank you Veronica Jackson Senior Animal Care Supervisor - Training and Operations 5651 River Road, Niagara Falls,ON, L2E 7M7 905-356-8888 ext 229 curator@birdkingdom.ca

The staff were really nice, we met one of the people who feeds the animals, she was very informative and let us tag along with her as she feeds the animals. One of the high light of this visit is Cowboy Colin, he welcomes all the visitors and gave us a jumanji-indiana jones vibe

As my readers will know, I've reviewed Bird Kingdom before on TripAdvisor; as they also know, I normally walk with a rollator. I'd pointed out in my earlier review that, while most of Bird Kingdom is completely accessible to walkers, rollators, wheelchairs, electric scooters,

This is a great place to spend some time visiting. Lots of different types of birds, local historia, reptiles, amphibians and a reasonably priced gift shop too. Definitely worth a visit.
