Warm welcoming and informative. I enjoyed all aspects of my visit especially the stories. They made sure we saw some awesome grizzlies and marine mammals. I learned some interesting things about these animals. I hope to visit with them again

      Culture and Wildlife Tour
We did the Culture and Wildlife tour and would thoroughly recommend. An emotional and inspiring glimpse into the people and nature of this beautiful region. Some of the history is difficult to confront but the strength, dignity, knowledge and warmth of the Homalco people is an example to us all.

One of the best days of my life
The bears were beautiful. Scenery absolutely stunning. The guides had our safety in mind all the time. We got a lot of videos and photos. Calvin was the highlight of the tour. Funny and witty and full of stories, I highly recommend the tour with Calvin, he was a gentle giant and really has a deep appreciation and understanding of the bears.

      Fantastic trip!
What a beautiful trip with some great guides. Steve - a personable guy with good local knowledge and captain of a brand new, state of the art boat. Casey - such a well spoken educator with moving stories of her family and broader community and their relationship with the local area. Lucky enough to see a humpback mother and calf onroute to the island along with a heap of sea lions. Our young family really enjoyed the trip - thanks again…

Grizzly bears close up and personal
The trip Great Bears of Bute was amazing. We had so many encounters with grizzly bears, all in safe environment (either viewing platforms or standing between our tour guides, Michael and Wilson). We watched different bear activities - walking, swimming, eating, looking after a cub in different environments - along the river and in the rainforest. Michael and Wilson were very knowledgeable, experienced, professional and friendly, we couldn't wish for better tour guides. They met us as we arrived in Orford Bay Bute Inlet and we spend 3 hours there bear watching. There were lots of opportunities for photography, I got really nice photos even on my phone. The trip is for a limited number of people (there were 9 on our tour, 12 is maximum) and we did not see any other tours or people during the day. We were also introduced to the Homalco people history and culture. Our boat trip to Orford Bay and back to Campbell River was hosted by captain Ronnie and Janet who also accompanied us on the land tour. Janet told us lots of stories about Homalco people and their culture, including art. She even sang a beautiful song for us. The boat was very comfortable and food and drinks were provided. I fully recommend this trip to anyone, it was unbelievable.

      Magical trip to Bute
Calvin, Janet, and Guy made the trip a magical experience. Calvin and Janet shared parts of Homalco culture which was lovely to learn about. We got to see grizzlies! And on the way back we found a pod of orca that were stunning. Overall a wonderful experience, everything was run smoothly and safely. Highly recommend!

      Best Bear Tour Ever!
We are local and always wanted to do a bear tour. We did the Great Bears of Bute Tour. This one was recommended to us and it was absolutely amazing. Guy and Janet were our boat guides, Calvin was our bus guide and they were fabulous. The entire day and experience was made because of them. From their friendly smiles, being so helpful with everyone in the group and incredibly hospitable. We saw bears and as extra's we saw orcas and much more sea life. Everyone we encountered during the day was incredibly kind, helpful and so happy that it made the experience a memorable one. The whole trip was handled professionally with attention to safety and also with respect for the wildlife that we were viewing. The tour has only 12 people on it so things were not cramped, there was a lot of space for moving around the boat and viewing areas. Boat we were on was I believe new or built within last year, could tell the boats they use are well maintained. A very professional company and if you are looking for a bear experience we highly recommend them.

      Our Grizzly Bear Day Tour
From start to finish, was a fantastic cultural and wildlife tour. Ron and Janet kept us well informed and engrossed in indigenous stories along the way. Saw humpback whales, sea lions, and orcas rounding up seals before the feeding frenzy. Fascinating, nature at its best. Saw grizzly’s hunting for and eating salmon. Amazing sight! Saw bears at each stop. Were entertained by the dry humour of Tony and Wilson on the bus tour leg of our trip. Overall , a fantastic day trip filled with unforgettable sights and many, many photos taken! Thankyou to Homalco Tours. Eleven out of ten !!

Up close and personal with wildlife
We just returned from Campbell River and the Homalco Deluxe Grizzly & Cultural Tour. Our hosts/guides were so very warm and welcoming and shared their knowledge and personal background as it relates to their culture. Our heartfelt thanks go to Janet, Ron, Tony & Bob for making this day so very special for the 3 of us. We were so looking forward to this outing and we were not disappointed. We learned and we experienced and talked. We also had a safe yet up close & personal encounter with a bear and her cub ... it was so exciting yet intimate for the whole group. Thanks again for a truly wonderful and memorable day.

      A Wonderful New Experience
We had a couple of detours on the way to Church House to view humpback whales and orcas, which was awesome. Our Guide Janet, and Captain Ron gave a great tour at Aupe. Then at Orford we saw bears in the river, got some good pictures, and great information and stories from Guide Calvin and Driver Bob. You can tell these people enjoy their jobs, which made for a great day for our group. Thanks!

Fantastic Grizzly Bear Viewing and Stunning Scenery
This was a fantastic tour and highly recommended. We were greeted by our guide and captain and given a good safety briefing and orientation. The covered cabin had great viewing and we sped smoothly and quietly across the water. The trip through the islands was spectacular and we spotted Orcas and sea lions en route. The bear viewing when we reached Orford Bay exceeded our expectations and we saw many grizzlies, unconcerned by our presence, in most of the viewing areas and towers, in a relaxed and unhurried way. Our return journey was very enjoyable, with sandwich lunch provided underway, and we stopped to see more sea lions and orcas. Throughout, our guides were professional, friendly and informative. The First Nation guides were entertaining and shared knowledge of their traditional stories and language whilst hosting us.

      Having Time of Our Life
For anyone desiring to learn more about First Nations' Culture and the natural wildlife and environment of the B.C. northwest coast this tour is an opportunity to be taken. Out pilot, Ron started by reviewing the safety features and procedures of the boat, which reassured me. We were fortunate to see seals, sea lions, a pod of orcas, and a mother (with calf) humpback whale! The air was clear, clean, and fresh, with no cottage or other boats to be seen, giving the feeling of being at one with nature. The seascapes and landscapes were breathtaking. At Aupe, there is a brand-new treated timber and concrete, long dock. Aupe is the village site where Ron grew up. Here he guided us along paths, past the remnants of village buildings and into the forest. My sister stepped in fresh bear poo! Ron explained his past childhood in the village and how the site is being considered for transformation into a healing centre. From a look out point, our naturalist guide, Cassie, presented us with an honour song in tribute to murdered and missing indigenous girls and women. Set against the spectacular beauty of the ocean, mountains, and forests it was poignant. On the return Cassie informed us about the fish and sea gulls of the area, and some of us saw an eagle's nest. (I missed it---too busy taking photos.) For practicalities, coffee, tea, or hot chocolate are offered, along with binoculars. Clothing suggestions are dependent on the season, although a sunhat and a toque, a rain slicker, a jacket, and hiking shoes are advisable, given that there is an open-air section of the boat. There is a heated indoor section, too, provided with a washroom. A landing ramp is at the front, but we didn't use it to go ashore.

      Experience of a Lifetime!
We had the most amazing experience on the Homalco Great Bears of Bute Tour. It ranked as one of the top wildlife viewing trips of our lives. We saw 9 different grizzlies, some at very close quarters feeding on salmon, 13 bald eagles, numerous hump backed whales and a pod of 4 orcas. Our captain, Guy, made the boat trip informative and fun and the our bear guides, Calvin and Wilson, provided the most exceptional viewing opportunities for our group. We loved hearing the traditional stories which provided a connection with the indigenous culture of the area. We would highly recommend this fantastic trip.

We highly recommend this tour experience having done a number of others in Canada and Alaska
Paul our boat skipper managed to find some sea lions and Humpback whales on route to Bute inlet and gave an Insite into local knowledge and places
Hamalco run a small fleet of modern comfortable and welll handling boats with ample warm inside seating or outside bow seating for all guests
Apron arrival at Hamalco Wharf we were met by our guides and bus driver Kelvin & Buck
After a brief safety orientation stop at base camp with a cultural history briefing of wildlife and land importance to Hamalco peoples we boarded our bus of 12 guest
Kelvin is passionate about his job and culture with folk-law tales of animals of the forest
We were not disappointed with in minutes we had stopped on a bridge
to see a Mother and two cubs come towards or group and walk under the bridge literally only 5 meters or 15 feet away
Our group managed to spot approx 8 Grizzly bears fishing or roaming along rivers with numerous stops to hop out of bus for viewing
Our safety was always paramount with guides at either end of our spread out group keeping an ever eye out for bears and our wellbeing
Not everyone can be as lucky as we were, wildlife doesn’t run to our schedules

Astonishing. What a privilege to meet the indigenous people (our on site guides for the day) and to observe the Grizzly bears fishing and generally going about their business.

Be ready for a few hours at sea/river but if you can live with that the experience is definitely worth the time and cost. There were two boats with perhaps 10 people in each. The other group also saw a whale. We were guided separately so had slightly different experiences.

We learnt a lot about the history of the area and the people who have lived and worked there and the bears and salmon. We were lucky to enough to see a male grizzly early on and then a mother and two year old cub . Towards the end we saw two mothers fishing with their cubs on opposite sides of the bank. A mother and two cubs walled right by us. The pictures were taken on an iPhone with no special lenses.

The captain and guide on boat our boat were fantastic at imparting information. She shared some videos of beer behaviour with us.

Finally just to recognise the outstanding piloting and navigation by our clearly experienced captain and his mate acting as front lookout. The fog banks were so thick and bright at times we were snowblind.

Thank you for your fantastic review! We’re thrilled to hear that you found the experience enriching, from meeting our Indigenous guides to observing the grizzly bears in their natural habitat. It’s great that you enjoyed learning about the area's history and the relationship between the bears and salmon. It sure sounds like you were able to witness incredible wildlife moments, including two mothers and cubs at the same time. Your kind words about our captain and crew mean a lot to us; they work hard to ensure a safe and informative experience, even in challenging conditions. ?imot (Thank you) for recommending us, and we hope to welcome you back for more adventures in the future!

An amazing day, we saw nine grizzlies in total – including mothers with cubs. Saw them fishing, eating salmon, ambling along, they seemed totally unfazed by our presence and just doing their own thing. At one stop I was sitting on a rock on the riverbank and a grizzly walked along the opposite bank only 30 feet away - we were holding our breath. Wonderful guides Cassy, Paul, Gerry and Bob pointed out all sorts of interesting features and shared stories of the area. Also saw a number of humpback whales on our way to and from the bears, along with sea lions and a soaring bald eagle. A truly magical day. PS: I recommend taking a few snacks of your own as it can be quite a long time between an early breakfast and lunch.

    Money wasted!

Like other people who have reviewed this experience I was under the impression that I would see Grizzlies. The problem is not the tour itself but the false expectations they set. Here's what they say on their website...

"On this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to see wild grizzly bears feeding on spawning salmon and many other flora and fauna...Please keep in mind that these are wild animals, and we cannot guarantee the number of bears to be seen"

So the expectation is that you will see some Grizzlies but not necessarily a large number. When I saw no grizzlies at all I started to inquire as to why and what the recent experience has been.

My tour was on 18 August, the 4th day of the season. You can read other reviews about other people's experience on other days. Talking to staff what I learned was that on 2 of the tours the day before (17th) 4 bears were seen on one and 2 bears on another. I also learnt that 1 bear was seen on 15th and none on 16th. Given that there are at least 3 tours a day that means there were 12 tours on the first 4 days and only 3 of those had bears - a 25% success rate.

At over $600 per person I think it is reasonable to give people the information that they need to be able to assess whether they want to take the risk of not seeing bears. So I suggested to the staff that they make the data they collect on sightings publicly available. I confirmed that the data was collected and could be made available. I was informed that it was company policy to keep it secret.

I also inquired as to why the bears might not be there. They then revealed that logging had recommenced in the area and that young bears in particular may be "skittish" and choosing to feed at other inlets.

So there is a level of dishonesty in setting false expectations and not revealing important information. That is a shame because otherwise the tour was very pleasant.

I think that on the website, a simple table showing dates, tours and the number of bears seen is essential to avoid misrepresenting the tour offer and enabling customers to form their own view about the risk of not seeing bears.

I hope this review and suggestion enable the company to improve the experience for customers and help make the business successful.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We genuinely appreciate your detailed review and the opportunity to address your concerns. We understand how disappointing it can be to not see the wildlife you were hoping for, especially given the excitement that comes with such a tour. While we do emphasize that sightings of wild grizzly bears cannot be guaranteed, we aim to set realistic expectations and provide our guests with the best possible experience based on the available data. Regarding the bear sightings, our records show a 47% success rate (7 out of 15 tours) in the first four days, and a 58% success rate (7 out of 13) in the first 13 boats. We continuously monitor these numbers to adjust and improve our communication. The start of the season can be unpredictable, and factors outside our control such as environmental changes and human activity do impact wildlife behaviour. We appreciate your suggestion about making sighting data available to our guests and will take it into consideration as we strive to enhance transparency and manage expectations better. It is wonderful to hear that, despite your disappointment in certain aspects of the tour, you had a very pleasant experience. We strive to do everything in our power to provide a good experience, whether the wildlife are present or not. We value your input and will continue working on ways to improve and provide a more informed and enjoyable experience for all our guests.

2024-Aug-15th - we have just come back from the “The Great Bears of Bute Tour” by Homalco agency in Campbell River and we did actually see one bear only, even so far away from the watching tower that we could not take a good picture at all.

As far as I know, bears are usually along the riverside looking for salmons to eat, hence no salmons in the river means no bears to look for. We did not see any salmon at all in the river, as our guide did actually say that salmons start swimming in the river at the end of August in this area. Nobody from the staff actually looked to be sorry by the lack of bears, as if they already knew we were not supposed to find any. So, my question is: why is the Homalco agency scheduling tours in this period if they know in advance that the probability to find bears is almost zero?

I’d have appreciated much better some honesty from the Homalco agency in cancelling the tour instead of cheating us and making us lose our time and money we could have spent is some other cheaper and more exciting experience.

I’m very sorry about writing this bad review, because I’m not used to doing this kind of things, but the expection level was as high as the cost of the tour, but it was extremely and definetely disappointed. I hope we got the only unlucky day and other people will be able to see a lot of bears (even though I suspect they won’t for at least the next 10-15 days at least). Anyway, I think I won’t suggest this tour to any other person travelling to Campbell River.

By the way, this is the best picture I could take, with 10X zoom… so, considering how small the bear appears, evaluate on your own far far away it could be…

By the way 2: I sketched an arrow on the picture to let you see the bear not the rocks…

Hi Andrea, thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to share your experience with us. I want to address a few points and provide some additional context. Firstly, I completely understand how disappointing it can be when wildlife doesn’t show up as hoped, especially on a tour designed to showcase such magnificent creatures. As we mentioned at the start of the tour, this was indeed our first day for bear tours and we had been seeing them during our season set up and know they are there, however it is still our early season. Bears are wild animals, and their movements and sightings can be unpredictable, especially early in the season before the salmon run is in full swing. We did see one bear during the tour, though I understand it was at a distance and not the close encounter you were hoping for. We know the bears are there, but again as we indicated before the tour began, this is early season with bears making there way into the area, foraging on grasses and other things, and sightings can vary as the bears follow the natural rhythms of the ecosystem. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, and we'll use it to ensure we communicate even more clearly about what guests can expect during this early part of the season. It's important to us that everyone feels informed and that their experience meets the expectations we set. Again, thank you for your honest review, and I hope that despite this experience, you'll have other opportunities to explore the beauty and wildlife of the region.

The Great Bears of Bute tour was amazing. Our boat captain Ron and the guides Calvin and Wilson were very informative and entertaining. Not only did we see 9 different bears, some fishing and frolicking in the river and others wandering around the track and forest, but we also gained some great insights into Homalco culture and heard a few of their myths and legends. I would highly recommend this tour as it is not only great value for money but it also assists in maintaining and growing Homalco culture.

Three of us went on the Great Bears of Bute Tour on 26 September 2022, along with 8 other guests, and had a fabulous experience. Everything went very smoothly from our arrival at the Campbell River office. The boat was just as comfortable as advertised, and we had a number of marine mammal sightings on the outbound trip. Most were fairly distant, but we had good sightings of a Humpback Whale and her calf. Once ashore at Bute Inlet, we were introduced to our resident local guides/drivers and soon set off seeking Grizzlies. There are several one or 2 storey viewing stands and some other, marked-out, ground-level viewing areas, but just before we reached our first stand, we stopped abruptly alongside a mother and 2 cubs spotted in the river. We were able to get out of the bus and had a great initial viewing experience with that family. It just got better and better from there, with a whole range of sightings. A few were relatively brief and fairly distant, but most were extended while the adult bears were fishing for salmon, and were close to us. In total we saw 9 different Grizzlies of various sizes and ages (including one of this year's cubs), and we saw the mother with the 2 cubs twice. On top of all that, we saw a range of birds from Bald Eagles and Turkey Vultures on down, and the trip was really rounded off by all the explanations and insights from our First Nation hosts. The Tour was excellent value for money, and we cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone with an interest in wildlife.

The tour began with a very friendly welcome and introduction to the safety instructions on the boat.
Afterwards, we start with a 2-hour boat trip. From a distance we also saw some whales.
After 2 hours there was a lunch break on the water with great views of the mountains.
Another 30min trip by boat and the destination was reached. Here we were welcomed by very warm people who drove us with small buses to a “Welcome Center”.
That's where the bear tour began. We took the bus further into the forest, to various bear viewing spots.
Initially we had concerns about having caught a bad day as the bears did not show up, but then bears kept coming out. Among other things with small babies. We were very close to the animals and could observe them eating salmon. The “rangers” observe the environment and behaviour of the bears to ensure the required clearance.
Besides, we were also taught a few words in “Indian language” of the native language.

All in all, it was an insane experience which is highly recommended.

The only thing everyone should be prepared for in advance is that the boat trip (round trip) takes about 4-5h.

This 10 hour trip made memories for a lifetime and was enjoyable from start to finish. The long, very scenic boat ride was confiable and smooth. The guides were generous in sharing Homalco stories and songs, and the recent history of dispossession, enterprise and continuing connection with culture and nature. It was moving and inspiring.
The grizzly tour was incredible. I know how uncooperative wildlife can be - there were no guarantees we would actually see a bear and I was happy if it was just a nice boat trip - but my expectations were exceeded. Safety was paramount but we were still up close and personal with several bears. We were able to watch them fishing and peacefully foraging at close range, all in beautiful scenery.
On the trip we saw many humpback whales close up which slowed our trip. The coxswain was really good about maintaining regulation distance from the animals. I really appreciated how respectful the guides were all day - there was no sense of animals being perused or harassed but we saw so much in peaceful coexistence.. Because of the need for a fast trip it was hard to identify birds but their were scoters, harlequin ducks, murres, murrelets, mergansers, guillemots and, of course, lots of gulls and eagles.
This was an expensive trip for me but I would do it again tomorrow.

Wow. What an amazing company to have for our photography group trip. Our captain Guy was funny, but most important, he was extremely knowledgeable, and really opened my eyes up during this outting. You can tell he has a lot of passion for what he does.
We had the luxury of seeing killer whales just as we left the Harbour!! That was some bucket list items for a few of our group members. We saw them on our way back as well. The day started off a bit rainy, and overcast, but that didn't detract from the beautiful scenery we saw. Cassy our tour guide was amazing as well. Extremely knowledgeable about their culture, traditions, and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Once you get to the mainland, you take a shuttle to the various viewing areas. We saw the Grizzly Bears at 3 separate locations. The staff at the mainland were very knowledgeable, and I didn't feel unsafe at any point. I was given an opportunity to stand at the ground level with one of the guides watching over me as I took photos. That was a special moment. The landscape is stunning and we had 1 male Grizzly come in and catch a fish and eat it in front of our groups. So very cool to see. We almost got tired of seeing Bald Eagles!!! Well, not really. I lost track of how many we saw.

On the way back, we detoured through some rapids, stopped at a waterfall, more killer whale sightings, and just an amazing day overall. Thank you Homalco for making our trip one our group will never forget.

The boat was very comfortable, and cozy. We didn't feel like we were crammed into a sardine can. Also having the seats on the bow when the weather was nicee was very nice. We had 12 people in our group, and no one had any negative feedback about any part of our tour. I can't wait to come back. I can't recommend them enough!!!

Oh ya, don't try to bring your own bear spray!!! Not allowed on the boat!!!
