Journey in comfort on-board a covered, heated boat through the Salish Sea Aupe (Church House), Homalco First Nation's last village site. Along the way your skipper and First Nation guide will share their knowledge of the human history and legends of this spectacular area while on the lookout for humpback whales, orcas, dolpins, sea lions, bald eagles and more.

Warm welcoming and informative. I enjoyed all aspects of my visit especially the stories. They made sure we saw some awesome grizzlies and marine mammals. I learned some interesting things about these animals. I hope to visit with them again

      Do not miss this experience!
Our superb Homalco tour guides shared their native lands, history, stories, language and more on this full day tour up river from the Georgia Strait to their original territory. Ture, we sawsmore bear tracks than actual bears, (a few glimpses) but we saw many bald eagles, shorebirds, sea lions, and seals amid some of the most beautiful natural scenery I've ever seen. Mainly we were awed by our guides' efforts to reclaim, nurture and share the Homalco langauge and way of life in this gorgeous corner of the world.

      Great day with great guides
A fantastic, full day out! First you go on a (speedy!) boat for 2hrs, we had the pleasure of using the new boat they had just acquired so we all had comfortable seats in a covered cabin. During the journey the guide (Cassie) told us all about the area, some wildlife, and the local language and culture. She also gave us snacks :) When we arrived at the location for bear-watching we were met by our Bear Guides Michael and Buck, who gave us a traditional welcome in the local language and then took us to see some Bears! We saw two females on the trip, digging and then interacting with each other, it was really cool. And whenever we were in the van Michael would share his knowledge and experience about the bears in the area. On the way back to Campbell River the boat captain tried to find us some wildlife, and we saw sea lions, bald eagles and dolphins! This was a great day out with fantastic guides who really seem to care about the animals and preserving the culture. Highly recommended!

      Culture and Wildlife Tour
We did the Culture and Wildlife tour and would thoroughly recommend. An emotional and inspiring glimpse into the people and nature of this beautiful region. Some of the history is difficult to confront but the strength, dignity, knowledge and warmth of the Homalco people is an example to us all.

Grizzly Bears in Their Great Bear Rainforest Buffet
My wife and I had two Homalco bus tours at Orford Bay in Bute Inlet early October 2024. We specifically wanted to see grizzlies in their natural habitat fattening up for the winter and were not disappointed. On the first stop on the first tour, we observed a bear! We eventually saw 7 bears (in 11 sightings). The viewing stands provided excellent close (and safe for us and the bears) views. Our Homalco viewing guide (Calvin) was excellent, providing much wildlife and cultural information. Our bus driver (Wilson) avoided most of the worst bumps. Our second tour to Tobia Inlet had to be cancelled when an overnight rain storm washed out roads. Our group was offered a refunded cancellation or return to Orford Bay (which we quickly selected). We were delighted to see a couple more bears despite continuous rain (admirably guided by Tony and bus driver John). In addition to seeing the bears, Homalco provided a comfortable boat ride to Orford Bay complete with a very interesting and knowledgeable cultural guide (Janet on both trips) and boat drivers (Steve and Ron), who interrupted the ride to view a black bear, pointed out a pod of dolphins, and showed us seals and sea lions. Homalco provided an an excellent lunch during the boat rides. An excellent and memorable tour overall.

First class all the way there and back
What a wonderful experience this was. Our boat driver Steve and our guides, including Chyanne of course, were first class. An unscheduled view of three humpback whales, a delicious sandwich lunch were the build up for seeing three grizzly bears (one cub) in an environment safe for us and the bears. We even saw a salmon caught! The First Nation support was gratifying and we learned much about their history. Thank you and well done.

      Bears and Culture!
Had a great day heading up to Bute Inlet with Homalco Wildlife and Cultural Tours. Not only were we lucky enough to see half a dozen grizzly bears (and a couple of humpbacks!) Judith (and Calvin on the tour) shared numerous Coast Salish stories that gave us a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Homoalco culture. Thanks to Guy and Gary for doing the driving. Terrific day.

Great Bears of Bute is simply a great trip!
Awesome time all around. Skipper Steve was just great, Cassie our guide on the boat was very knowledgable about Indigenous history and culture. Cheyenne, our tour guide on land knew so much, was tons of fun. Bob our bus driver was hilarious. Everything about the day was totally fantastic. Well worth the money and can't wait to try it again next year.

Big tick for the bucket list Grizzly Bears
A wonderful day with experienced and knowledgeable guides. Special moments with grizzly bears and excellent opportunities for great photos of the bears fishing and foraging. The 2 hour boat ride was a great way to take in the magnificent views of the Campbell River and Orford Bay. Calvin & Gary who guided us on land with the Grizzlies were fantastic which their knowledge of the area and the ways of the salmon and the bears whilst on the boat captain Guy and our naturalist Janet were great hosts and inspiring with their knowledge of the history and workings of the region.

      Save your money. Don’t go
This was more of a political stage for them to talk about the politics behind the indigenous people and what they call the settlers. Keep your opinions to yourselves and take us to see the bears. You have the market cornered on bear viewing in BC There is no need to have so many signs around the buildings suggesting how much you appreciate tips. As for the minute amount of time that there was viewing, most of it was spent on the bus going from tower to tower. Save your money and watch it on YouTube. No politics in a paying customers time

      Fabulous trip to Homalco
What an amazing trip, firstly with a very comfortable boat where we saw a pod of orcas and then to see 2 grizzly bears on our arrival was beyond our expectations. All of our guides were very knowledgable with lots of stories and explanations to bring the whole trip to life. I can’t recommend Caption John and Kelvin enough.

      Highly recomended!!
This tour was incredible!!! We saw at least 8 bears ( including a mum with 2 Kids, and one miserable bear with a huge tapeworm hanging out of the butt - interesting for me as a vet 😁). The most stunning experience was to see that one of the bears really really close in that dark, dense and mossy forest just a few meters away from us!! We also saw salmon (of course), bald eagles, sealions, dolphins, humpbacks and even a few orcas Our Skipper Steve and our guides Wilson and Chyanne were awesome, thanks for your jokes and stories and for sharing your knowledge with us. We would join you for a tour again for sure!!

One of the best days of my life
The bears were beautiful. Scenery absolutely stunning. The guides had our safety in mind all the time. We got a lot of videos and photos. Calvin was the highlight of the tour. Funny and witty and full of stories, I highly recommend the tour with Calvin, he was a gentle giant and really has a deep appreciation and understanding of the bears.

      Best Bear trip
We weren’t sure if we would see any bears but we saw 12, 3 of which were cubs. It was amazing ! We felt very safe and our guides Chyanne and Gloria aka Thelma and Louise were the nicest people and very informative. We had a boat trip to Bute with Captain Al, also very informative and our return journey was the the most beautiful scenery. Would definitely recommend this trip.

This was an absolutely incredible experience. I have lived on the coast all my life and always enjoy learning more about this beautiful place.

Our guides shared their culture and the stories that have been passed down and told through many generations. They also included personal experiences to make the places we were seeing come alive. Their passion makes the tour second to none. Janet, one of our guides, also sang in her language for us. Her voice was amazing and hearing it while viewing an old village site, sent shivers down my spine.

Orford Bay and Bute Inlet are breathtaking! We enjoyed our delicious lunch sitting on the dock in Orford Bay, bofore heading into the forest to learn more about the Homalco way of life and their connection to the land, sea and wildlife.

We were lucky enough to see a grizzly bear, eagles, squirrels, kingfisher, humpbacks, orcas, porpoises, seals and sea lions!

This tour was everything I hoped it would be and would highly recommend it to everyone!

Amazing people, stories and culture. I was on the People Water Land tour and it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. It was worth it to find a wildlife tour that's owned by an indigenous group because it made the experience so much more cultural, meaningful and connected to the stories of the land we were in. It's also great that the profit from these tours go back into benefiting the people, the land and the wildlife as well.

Our guides, Cassie and Ron, were very personable and knowledgeable. Hearing Ron's firsthand stories of growing up in the village site we visited and stories about the people who lived and had connections to this village were very compelling. Cassie also taught us many words from their traditional language, told us cultural stories that she grew up hearing and even performed a song for us. Listening to her sing the MMIW&G song in the forest overlooking the village site and the sea was a very special moment that's etched into my memory.

Our guides were also very well-prepared with knowledge about the wildlife that we saw on the tour and took great care of everyone on the trip. We saw alot of humpback activity. The boat ride was very comfortable with both indoor and outdoor seating and they even provided us with a pair of binoculars since we didn't bring one. It was a very serene and relaxing ride.

We also weaved a cedar bracelet, which I didn't think much of before the tour, but it was alot more significant to me when I was actually creating something with my hands in the forest and it felt really good to bring home a physical piece of my memory there. Also, the clearing where we weaved the bracelet was beautiful. Amazing view and a great place to sit on the ledge for a picture or just to watch the calm waters below.

Thank you for such a welcoming experience and for sharing so much of your culture with us. I enjoyed it so much that I might come back next time for the bear tour as well!

TL;DR: Highly recommend if you're looking for a more culturally rich and meaningful experience from guides with a strong and personal connection to the stories of this land.

Our school staff went on this tour as the start of our school year professional development. We booked two 12 person tours (morning and afternoon) and everyone loved their time. Our tour guide and boat pilot (Cassie and Ron) were friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating. As educators, we are always looking for ways we can gain a better cultural understanding of some of the families we work with. This tour provided that for us and we hope that we can take what we have experienced and provide that back to children to help them grow up with a stronger sense of culture and purpose. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the history of the Homalco people. Spotting all the wildlife of whales, eagles, sea lions, seals and the occasional porpoise was an absolute bonus. This truly is a beautiful area that can hold a candle to any other destination on this planet.

We were hoping to do the bear tour, but discovered we were a week too early and would be back in the UK by the time of the first bear tour of the season. So, we decided to do the People Water Land tour, as we are interested to learn more about First Nations culture. We absolutely loved our trip! Cassie & Ron were excellent guides, explained about marine culture and wildlife, as well as their own culture and traditions.

On the boat journeys to and from Aupe we slowed and stopped several times, seeing humpback whales, Orcas and dolphins from a safe distance (for us and them). When we reached Aupe, we could get straight off the landing craft and it was fascinating to see and hear about how life in the territory was until the mid 1960s from Cassie and Ron’s first-hand memories and experiences. We had the opportunity to make a Cedar bracelet and listen to Cassie singing a song for missing women and girls. This trip comes highly recommended and will leave you with lasting memories!

A lovely mixture of nature watching and learning about native culture and history from people who have lived it and are living it. We visited the village on a remote inlet where both the captain and our tour guide were born and raised, and heard personal stories while walking among the remains of that village. On the way back we spotted whales and seals.

It was heartbreaking to hear of all the different ways in which Canada's government and white settlers have actively dispossessed the Homalco tribe (like so many other tribes), and to make the connection with the experiences of real people standing before us, pushing through embarassment because they feel it is important to share what really happened.

We are grateful to have been on this very personal journey , and it was heartwarming to hear of the many ways, big and small, in which this tribe is reclaiming its place in the area, rebuilding itself with small enterprises and finding back its customs and its pride. Janet in particular is a guide and a person for whom I have the deepest respect.

I would have loved to go on a bear hunt too, if only time and money hadn't run short.

Almost as if it was showing us the way, our trip began following an eagle through Seymour Narrows. We got to Church House, a gathered on the beach where Janet told us some of the history of the Homalco people. She is extremely knowledgeable identifying plants and trees, their medicinal properties and practical uses. She told stories, drummed and sang while we wove cedar bracelets at a beautiful look-out spot. On the way back, Kelsie not only found us a humpback whale to view, but also a pod of orcas which satisfied the guests on the boat.
What a great day it was.
I highly recommend it, and definitely plan to go again in the future.

What an incredible experience and a must-do for anyone who wants to discover not only the power of nature but also delve into the history of Canada and the Indigenous people. Wow, what an experience. Because a few other people didn't show up, we had the tour just for the two of us, which made it even more special.

We truly got to feel the passion of sailing, fished seaweed out of the water, and felt it. We spotted various birds and sea lions along the way. Once we arrived at Church House, the spirit of the past overwhelmed us. The history here is profoundly impressive; the impact of colonization is palpable, yet so is the strength of the people and their spirit that still prevails. Although the land is abandoned, you can feel the hope and love the tribe has for this piece of land.

The history here tells a story of the people's passion, their mindful way of living, their resilience after surviving colonization, and the importance of embracing one's language and culture. It was a privilege to experience this so deeply. I'll spare you the harrowing stories of what happened to the women, but when Janet, a 'warrior woman,' sang in her own language, I felt everything I described before, and my eyes couldn't hold back the tears.

For anyone interested in wildlife spotting and truly understanding the history of the Indigenous people, I highly recommend booking this tour. For me, it was a life-changing experience.

The People Water Land tour was a humbling and deeply moving experience. Our guides, Janet and Ron, shared some of their Homalco nation’s history and culture with such grace and generosity. It was a real honour to be invited to Aupe. To hear it’s story through Janet and Ron has given me a much needed insight into the history of this area. We can’t wait to come back again and learn more. The trip includes a nature and whale watching experience along the way, and the most beautiful landscape. i:mote to everyone at Homalco Tours.

Took the People : Water : Land tour. It was an authentic, meaningful and a most memorable experience led by sincere, responsive and knowledgeable first nations guides. What’s not to like? A tiny bit of hiking over rough trails was involved so wear sturdy shoes. Very worthwhile.

I have been in Kanada, BC for three weeks now and done severall tours. My tour with this team was the best of all.

As I was the only person booked on this tour and the minimum number of people was not met, I was contacked and asked if I would like to take another tour. Holly did a great job by facilitating everthing for me and I was smoothly trandferred to the Spring Bear Tour (I hope thats the correct title).
The tour was exeptional and Jennet and Ron did an amazing job explaining the area, the culture arounf the differend sites and animals and pointed to the different animals on land and in the water. We saw eagles, dolphins, several bears....and a wunderfull landscape.
As the groups are small, it is easy to connect and to talk with the others easily during the tour and creates a nice atmosphere. I appreciate this highly!!!

    Best wishes from Germany,
    Katharina
