About
Take the Sunwapta challenge on Jasper’s wild whitewater rollercoaster ride. With a steep gradient and numerous rapids, this 4-hour round trip is the only Class 3 rapids located fully within Jasper National Park. It offers spectacular scenery and good wildlife opportunities. Don’t miss the high water mid-June to late July!

What to expect
  • Make your way to a central location in Jasper, then travel 45 minutes to a put-in spot by the Sunwapta River in Jasper National Park. Wear a swimsuit under your clothes so you’ll be ready for a quick change into a wetsuit, neoprene booties, and a paddle jacket, and on cooler days, bring a pair of wool socks to wear inside the neoprene booties.  Meet the river guides for a briefing on white water paddling technique and safety, then hit the river in self-bailing rafts that accommodate up to six passengers. The name of the Sunwapta comes from the Stoney Indian term “turbulent river,” and during the highest-water months of mid-June to late July, it lives up to its name with a consistent mix of Class II and Class III rapids. Watch for wildlife at the edge of the water, as Jasper National Park is habitat for everything from tiny pikas to grizzly bears and moose, and enjoy views of the dramatic Rocky Mountain landscape. After roughly 1.5 hours on the water, steer to shore at a take out point—it’s a great idea to bring a towel and warm clothes to change into when you get off the river. This 4-hour whitewater trip concludes with return transfer to Jasper.

We had so much fun as this was our first time whitewaterrafting! I would highly recommend this tour and make sure to try the class 3 to get a great starting point and experience some faster waves. I would also like to personally thank Tour Guide, Brodie Royce! The respect and kindness he showed was unprecedented!! Thankyou so much 💓

Fun and Adventure
We were on two rafts guided by Brodie and Ty, they were both great!!! Our family had never been on a raft before and we had a blast! This was enough rapids to get us excited but not to hard to scare the family! Would definitely recommend this when your in Jasper, only wish we had done it earlier in our trip as Ty was a wealth of info for other things to do in and around Jasper

Well-organized company. Very enjoyable guides as well! My girlfriend and I had such an amazing experience even though it was pouring rain! The rapids were challenging at time! I would recommend for experienced people who have done rafting before! I would do it all over again! Maligne Rafting Adventures you got it!

Do not recommend – may not paddle for the entire excursion.

Lessons learned: When you’re asked which position of the boat you want, pick anything, so you don't get stuck in the “princess” position. When in doubt, ensure that there are a sufficient number of spots on the boat to accommodate your group size.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The guides were knowledgeable and experienced, and the transportation and logistics were handled well enough, but the overall operations could use significant improvement.

On our outing at Sunwapta River on 7/15 1:30PM, there were two boats that each could seat 6 paddlers and the guide. That day, there was a group of 5, 2, 2, and our group of 3. The groupings made it so that the guides put the group of 5 in one boat and the rest of us in the other boat, for a total of 7.

We were told that one person would have to ride “king” or “princess” position, but that we would rotate out once we were on the river. We were not asked if we would split up, and frankly why would we? You wouldn't split up a couple and have them raft separately, why would you do that to a group of friends?

I sat in the non-paddling position for a third of the trip. This position SUCKS. You don’t have an oar. You don’t paddle. There’s no participation with any of the guide’s commands like paddling forward or backward. All you do is sit there and get splashed in the face.

When asked by the guide part way through to switch, my friend reluctantly gave up her position so that I could get a chance to paddle. At another point in the excursion, the guide asked again if anyone wanted to switch to the non-paddling position and of course no one volunteered. People don’t sign up for a river rafting adventure only to sit on a boat and get splashed in the face.

So in the end, only my group of 3 had to rotate in the non-paddling position, which I felt was incredibly unfair. Really put a damper on our first river rafting experience. I emailed customer service afterwards and they cited safety concerns and insisted that they offered to split us up (they did not, and even if they did, that’s not an acceptable solution). When signing groups up for river rafting, they should use each individual boat as the max capacity, not the overall number of seats between two boats. If we had known our group would put in a boat over the 6 person threshold and that we would have to be in the non-paddling position, we would have gone with another company.

I requested a refund of 33% of the total cost of the trip, since our group did not paddle for a third of the trip. The request was not honoured and complimentary photos were provided instead.

We are very sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with your rafting trip. Our company takes pride in providing exceptional guest experience and it is disappointing to hear that in this instance we did not meet your expectations. Due to the nature of the activity, it is not always possible to keep groups together and therefore boat configurations are always up to the discretion of the guides. We understand that groups prefer to raft together and the guides do their best to accommodate this if at all possible. Our feedback from the guide was that you participated in and enjoyed the trip. After the trip when your dissatisfaction was brought to our attention through your booking agent we provided you with complimentary photos. We appreciate your feedback. Maligne Rafting Adventures reviews each case individually to understand exactly what happened, how it may have been avoided, and how to ensure such scenarios may be averted in the future. We hope you will give us another chance to prove our high standards to you again someday. Sincerely, Trevor Lescard General Manager

So Much Fun - Even During Covid!
Aug. 2020
White Water Rafting on the Sunwapta River was amazing! The water was freezing, but that did not prevent us from having such a fun time. Brody, our Maligne Adventures raft guide, did an incredible job instructing us on how to steer through the rapids and how to avoid the many obstacles in the water.

Rafts can normally hold 6 people plus a guide. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, our group of 4 was in our own raft with our guide which was perfect for us.

We chose to not take the bus transfer from the downtown Jasper meeting point to avoid having to wear masks for the 45 minute per direction bus ride. We followed the bus in our own car.

Everyone at Maligne Adventures, from Daniella in the reservations office to the rafting guides were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

We highly recommend this tour. We would most certainly do it again.
