Wonderful activity
It was an absolutely wonderful experience! We had so much fun tasting the rum, looking at the house which was so intact and going on the train ride! Would highly recommend!

Lovely relaxing day out
Oct. 2021
Well this was our third trip on the railway and always nice to bring along a new friend to experience it. Our first time was the day it opened and I think that was the diesel engine.
The sounds and smell of a real steam engine make this extra special.
Along with a tour around the house (which I must have done 30+ times by now) and lunch on the terrace it is a pretty near perfect afternoon.

The best place to visit in Barbados
Oct. 2021 • Family
If you're looking for a break from the beautiful Barbados beaches then we can definitely recommend a visit to St Nicholas Abbey. Easy to find, (use Google maps), from the moment you arrive & are greeted at the gate, you know you are in for a quality experience. The facilities, cafe, gift shops and parking were all well organised. The staff welcome you to 'board the train' and it's such a beautifully restored and narrated experience from the team on-board. We won't provide many spoilers, but it's topped off with a fabulous view from the top of Cherry Tree Hill, which was somewhere on our visit list too! Then you get to visit the wonderful plantation house, with again a fabulous guided tour at no extra cost if you wish. Then the real highlight of the day for me, we got to sample some of the amazing Rums they make in the distillery. We were lucky enough to meet Simon and spend some time in his delightful company before having a bottle of Rum engraved to remind us of the best visit we had whilst visiting the island. Definitely should be top of your visit list when you next head to Barbados!

Lovely tour, interesting, fun & scenic
This was a last minute deciscion to visit and I'm really glad we did.
Right from a lovely warm greeting from Michelle on the gate to us leaving, we felt very welcomed.
The tour of the lovely 17th century mansion was very interesting, as was a film made in 1935 by one of the family members. The history and humour very much brought the history of both the island and the plantation to life.
Larry then chats very humorously about their rum & of course you are welcome to sample some.
You can meander around at your own pace, enjoy the gardens and the cafe.
The entrance fee includes a ride on a small steam railway up to Cherry Hill. The views up there are lovely. There is then a very entertaining/educational history talk about the railway before your journey back to the mansion. The train ride & talk is about 40 mins in total.
This tour was great value for money, educational & interesting.

Train ride alone is an excellent reason for the visit but they have rum too!
We had a really nice time here! No need to book an expensive tour, the entrance fee of $60 bds includes a ride on the steam engine train, a guided (or self guided) tour of the house, and a rum tasting! Just make sure to check the timings so you don’t miss out on the train! The train stops at the top of Cherry Tree Hill which is a lovely viewing spot and you can see the entire east coast of the island! Then it takes you back down and to the house for a tour and rum tasting. The guides were all super friendly and well informed. One of the owners of the estate did the rum tasting who was very kind and full of jokes! You can also watch an 18min historic footage of Barbados and the distillery, which my husband found really interesting but I felt it was a little long.

We asked our hotel in advance how to get there and back and they told us usually the taxi driver would wait there while we visited for $10usd per hour and bring us back. The fixed fee for taxis from our hotel to the abbey was $60bds one way.
On the day, perhaps it was a slow day, and our taxi driver was happy to wait for us at no extra fee while we spent about 2h30 visiting. So we tipped him instead!

Little trip for steam train lovers.
Spent a lovely few hours here. Taxi driver called Malaki picked us up from the hotel and came back for us later. Good journey with a guided tour of the area. Train ride was great. Crew were very informative and my husband had the opportunity to help push the engine round on the turntable. Stunning views at the top of cherry tree hill with loads of photo opportunities. Nice house and the rum tasting was lush. All staff were friendly and I would recommend this trip.

I don't know who enjoyed this more, my toddler or my father-in-law! Beautiful grounds, the train is fun and not too long for kids, and the view from Cherry Tree Hill is more than worth the ride.

Beautiful and worth the journey
Jun. 2021 • Friends
St Nicholas Abbey is a beautiful property at one of the highest vantage points on the island. The train ride is fun, and take you to one of the most stunning views on the East Coast. The mansion, and the distillery are also something to experience, and feel well preserved in time. But what made it amazing for me is Simon, who I believe is the head distiller, and son of the owner. Simon joyously shares everything he knows about the history, the area, property, the people, and of course rum. I would suggest anybody looking for an off-beach, uniquely interesting afternoon in Barbados should check out the St Nicholas Abbey tour.

Great for the kids and the parents
Jan. 2021
We were lucky to stumble on this on our day trip. We were on our way from Speightstown to Bathsheba.

The train was lovely. I've visited from England where there are plenty of steam trains, but you rarely see a steam train maintained as well as this. It still operates and you can smell the coal burning as it chugs its way up the hill. My little boy got the chance to help push the turntable to turn around the train. The views at the end of the track are an added bonus.

This part of the tour is best for kids, but the adults get to finish up with a bit of rum tasting in the historical house. Good for the whole family I think.

There are a few things that they could improve. First, and most important, there was no mention in the history on our tour about the people who worked the plantation... I think in the modern world we don't need to gloss over the negative aspects of plantations. Also, the schedule needs some updating. Not only did the train leave at a weird time, but the train wasn't even meant to be running the day we were there. Maybe Covid was a factor. Lucky for us, we benefitted from this, but you may want to call ahead!
