- ekaterinal6070 contributionsA must if you'd like to learn about traditional cultureKabuki is a unique aspect of Japanese culture, one that requires specific cultural knowledge to understand and appreciate. This tour is a great opportunity to do so, accompanied by an experienced guide. It is fascinating to learn about the history of kabuki and Japan through the story being told in the performance. The guide is also very knowledgeable about specific traditional shops in the Asakusa area and can guide you through what might feel like overwhelming chaos.Written 18 January 2025
- timothyb320 contributionsUnderstand a unique Japanese experienceDespite having never seen live kabuki before, I was able to understand and enjoy this performance thanks to the explanation and materials provided by the knowledgeable guide and the English translation device provided. It was a uniquely Japanese experience, blending traditional music (shamisen), acting and dance. As story and relationships between characters are a bit complicated, I think that most foreign guests would need a guide in order to understand the plot. If you have time in your tour, I recommend purchasing one of the bento lunches sold in the theater to eat in between performances.Written 18 January 2025
- kennethg9410 contributionsDiddiculty booking bullet trainBooking info. I had tremendous difficuly booking tix online. Spent 2.5 hours looking for the last seats as they have room for luggage behind the seats. The website has lots of security. Could book tic with visa and mastercard (from USA). No bad seats in the arena and our guide showed us where all the spots to buy food, merchandise and gave us all the info we needed to follow along with the event so we understood what was going on at all times. For a super limited ticketed event this package was everything and more we could’ve hoped for when booking! Thank you Emi!!!Written 18 January 2025
- sheilai6500 contributionsEducational Fun!Great tour, I think it’s important to understand the cultural significance and structure behind sumo. It definitely made the experience easy and enriching, having Candy tell us what are the cultural faux pas, what to eat, who to cheer for and why. There was so much we wouldn’t know if we didn’t do the tour and for that I am grateful!Written 18 January 2025

- vi_tanhp20250 contributionsA Captivating Kabuki Experience - A Must-try Cultural Adventure!!!1I was absolutely thrilled to join the Kabuki tour! At first, I was a bit nervous, unsure if I could fully follow the storyline or appreciate the performance. However, the experience turned out to be incredibly smooth and memorable. From the moment we gathered, while waiting for the group to be complete, I had the chance to meet two wonderful new friends, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Before the performance, we were given a clear and engaging introduction to Kabuki and the play in English. The explanation struck the perfect balance—not too detailed but enough to spark my curiosity and heighten my excitement for the show. The performance itself was mesmerizing, with stunning costumes, expressive acting, and captivating storytelling. Our guide was attentive, professional, and genuinely passionate, which added to the overall experience. This was a truly unforgettable experience, and I will definitely recommend it to my friends and family as a must-try cultural adventure!Written 17 January 2025
- snxo70 contributionsDon’t miss out on this tour!I have always enjoyed Japanese theatre and I was looking for a tour that would be able to showcase the rich history of both sumo and kabuki. The kabuki performance in particular was riveting. Our guide, Kaoru, explained some nuisances of the show before we were brought into the theatre and it provided some needed context. You also have the option of renting a translator for 1500yen, which I recommend. Don’t miss out on this tour!Written 16 January 2025

After a very busy DIY sightseeing tour all over Japan, it was a wonderful experience to just get on a coach and be taken to so many different places that would have been hard to combine and visit all on our own. Our guide was clearly a huge Ghibli fan too and provided us with lots of information and anecdotes, even a review of the latest film (which made us go and see it in Japanese at the cinema the following day, even if we didn't understand much of it).
The only downside was that we didn't get quite enough time in the Edo Open Air Museum - it would have been lovely to visit more of the beautiful houses there.
The Ghibli Museum itself is full of loving little details, even in the toilets and cafe. It is, however, a bit small and so can get overcrowded. I'd also have liked to see more details about some of the other, lesser-known Ghibli films.

This one is a bit popular, but it's actually a bit small. If you buy the ticket at the original price, it's ok, but Klook has already sold it for hundreds of dollars per ticket, so it's not worth it. If you're not a die-hard fan, you can't really see anything special. The things in the souvenir shop are a bit rough. The only thing that impressed me was that you can watch a 15-minute movie inside, which was pretty good. The nearby Inokashira Park is pretty good, with plum blossoms in full bloom in February, but it rained the day we went there, so we didn't go much. There is a Lawson where you go out to catch the bus, which also sells some souvenirs, but the prices are much cheaper.

A nice, leisurely tour that makes for a good all-day activity when the rest of your vacation is jam packed with non-stop activities. Don’t bother eating breakfast cause the lunch buffet is part of the first stop on this tour. The food was pretty good and I really liked the Curry. There’s a bit of a spice to it so expect a small kick but not big. It has no meat too but if you want protein then you can simply combine it with the roasted beef steak they also provide. The Open-Air Architecture Museum was cool and relaxed, or maybe it was cause it rained that morning.. but it really did remind me of some of the places in Spirited Away and is definitely a bonus if you like Japanese history/culture in general. The last stop at the Museum was fantastic. They give you about 2.5 hrs to explore and it is more than enough time as the museum isn’t that big. We had plenty of time to explore everything and then relax at the cafe within the museum property. The museum can get really crowded though, especially the gift shop. But there is no set direction to go so you can always come back to things in any order. Very relaxed and cute tour. Our tour guide, Miki, was really nice and her English was very good. She filled the time traveling on the bus with useful tour guide information about each destination, so I was never bored. Great tour if you have a free day to dedicate to it and want something different from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. And it’s also a guaranteed entry into the Museum which is really hard to get tickets for!

On my view this tour is overpriced a good way. The cost of a regular ticket to the Ghibly studio is 1000 yen, which is a fare price. Because the building is not so big and can’ t accomodate many people, you haveh to buy tickets for a particular session. Buy a ticket directly on the museum’s web site 1 month before if you are a fan of cartoons, however do not expect to find there any “modern age“ technologies. This is all about history of animation, old equipment and cartoons of the past. Riding around town by bus for more than 3 hours altogether, and visiting a shrine, and a restaurant with non-Japanese food - this is what you can find with the SunRise tour. It takes a full day from 10 am to 6 pm.

Thank you for joining JTB Sunrise Tours, Ghibli Museum & Ghibli Film Appreciation Bus Tour. As everybody knows, it is said that tour highlight to the Ghibli Museum is most popular with persons who are enthusiasts of trendy Japanese animation and their graphic novel counterparts, etc. And other interesting places are Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum where a movie was set (an alternative plan will be available), lunch at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo which is a luxury Japanese-style hotel. Thank you for your accurate and kind comments.

Great way to get into Ghibli museum if you cannot get standard tickets. Lunch is good buffet at a beautiful hotel and tour of open architecture museum was nice. Would have liked more time at Ghibli museum and less at other sites though, we only had 2.5 hours there for an 8 hour booking and we felt like we had to leave before finishing.

I do not go on very many tours but this one was one of the best I have been on. Well organized and fun. I went I. This tour specifically got the Ghibli Museum but wound up enjoying going to the Open Air Museum as well. The lunch was also first class. Our guide was also very nice and extremely knowledgeable, she was a great host throughout. I would highly recommend this tour to any Ghibli fan I know coming through Tokyo.

It is good for the fans who love the art behind the movies. It kinda sucked because you cannot take any photos once you enter the building. I think ghibli park was more enjoyable with the amount of things to see/do especially for price and availability. Our tour was great being able to get lunch at this beautiful hotel and going to the architecture museum as well. The guide was great and very sweet!

The best time with Marie, our tour guide. We went to 3 different locations, last location was the Ghibli Museum and we had 2.5 hours there. Honestly, that’s all you need. Watch the short film there, go to the gift shop, and see the magic on every floor. It was 1000% worth it and we’re intending to do it again in Spring!

This was my daughter’s dream tour - a visit to the Ghibli Museum in particular - and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it too, thanks largely to our excellent guide Aki. The tour started from the Keio Plaza hotel which we learned was the first tall building built to withstand major earthquakes. Lunch followed at the amazing Gajoen hotel - a very attractive place with landscaping and waterfalls. Do use the restrooms, which are fitted out in traditional Japanese style! The buffet lunch was superb and great quality. After that, the architectural museum, which itself has buildings that acted as inspiration for scenes in Ghibli movies. Very interesting, and if I have one niggle I might have liked a bit more time here. But for most people, that would cut out time for the final item, and the main reason for the tour, which is of course the Ghibli Museum. It delighted my daughter, and I too found it absorbing. We had well over two hours here, in what is a quite small museum, but the time passes very quickly and there’s much to see. Thanks Aki for being such a great guide!

Hello! My son is coming to Tokyo Japan on 1/1 for study abroad at his university and is a huge ghibli fan. He tried to get tickets today for the museum but it was already sold out. If you have any cancellations for your tour on 1/2/24 or 1/6 or 1/7/24, would you let me know? Or if you know of anyway to get a ticket on one of those days, please let me know. Thanks so much in advance!!

Lunch at the Hotel Gajoen is a buffet, and there are many food options; steak, chicken, vegetables, salad, pasta etc. With serious allergies I would always check first, but there are lots of options besides fish- including a wonderful assortment of desserts.

Any chance of a tour on November 23? Am visiting Tokyo for business but have that day free and would love to visit this museum.
Written 11 November 2018
Google the Gibli museum website. Tickets are NOT sold at the museum and are usually ordered 3 months ahead of time if you are doing this on your own, like I did. I did not book the trip advisor tour. The website has a toggle for English. You might be able to buy them at a 7-11 store (they sell everything, incl baseball tickets) or, ask your hotel to help you. Or, book the trip on trip advisor last minute. Also use KLOOK for Tokyo.

I'm trying to purchase 2 tour tickets for Wednesday 29 May 2019 but the calendar for those dates are not available. Can you tell me when I can reserve these tickets? Thank you.
Written 22 October 2018
I did not book my tickets through Trip Advisor or Zlook. Go on the museum website and it will tell you how to get themdirectly. You can also get them in Japan at a local 7-11;however, I don’t read kanji or speak Japanese well enough to have done that. The tickets go on sale in three month increments. I was going in April, so I had to book in mid Feb for mid April. The website tells you how to do it, but the delivery fee was about the same as the ticket to usa
Written 22 October 2018
Yes you can, they will leave you at the Ghibli museum if you let them know you want to stay but you will have to get back to your hotel etc on your own, they don’t come back past Ghibli to pick you up.
The Architecture Park was really quite interesting and a great place to visit
