About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- OnAir328785171870 contributionsKyoto food tour with the best guide! My husband, teenage daughter and I did the Kyoto food tour with Raquel from Arigato Travel and she was beyond amazing! We were a difficult family because my daughter has sesame and nut allergies, which are very prevalent in Japan. We went to four restaurants and each one was delicious and completely safe for my daughter. Raquel also had tremendous knowledge of Japanese culture and the foods there and she was extremely informative. If that’s not enough, she was also one of the most delightful people I’ve ever met. Definitely go on this tour and use Raquel.!!Written 20 March 2025
- jonq5850 contributionsA great walking tour even in the rain and snow! While the weather was cold and raining, not ideal for a walking food tour our guild Wesley was amazing and took great care of us. He was a wealth of knowledge! He adjusted his plans to keep us out of the rain and we had an amazing experience! Highly recommend!Written 19 March 2025
- angelaq7990 contributionsAmazing walking & food tour!Even though it was a rainy, cold day, our tour was amazing! Our tour guide Wesley, had so much information about the area & Tokyo. The food was great too and we got lots of fun photos.Written 19 March 2025
- lesliefB9588TI0 contributionsThank you Yappy! Our first morning in Japan. What a fun way to start off our trip. Yappy and his assistant were excellent - good humoured and knowledgable. They were able to accommodate my gluten free requirement with no problem - in fact, Yappy had brought a bottle of gf soy sauce and small spray bottle for the tour and for me to keep. Really thoughtful attention to detail. So much appreciated. Great opportunity to see the fish market, get some insight into its history and to sample some very fresh fish. P.S. If you can't/won't eat raw fish, perhaps this isn't the tour for you. Otherwise I recommend it highly. Well worth it.Written 17 March 2025
- larrysX8588HD0 contributionsThe bestThe tour guides and Anne were amazing . Taking the trip to Japan can be insanely nerve-racking through the fact of the different cultures, but the truth is Anne and her team were amazing and made the trip an absolute pleasure.Written 17 March 2025
- C1335UBmarianag0 contributionsA must to deep dive in Osaka culture!!These tour exceeded our expectations! My husband and me went with the best couple Of ladies that showed their city in a very passionate way. We tried great food that is also approved by locals, we learned about the culture and had a very Fun time!Written 12 March 2025
- elizabethwI3882FR0 contributionsLocal eats and amazing guide Jane!My family and I were looking forward to trying local foods we couldn’t find on our own- and we got just that with an awesome tour guide Jane who showed us an amazing time! Five stops including ramen, sushi and a pancake dessert- several tucked away shops in Shibuya. My 12-year old loved EVERYTHING while Jane made sure they took into account one of us who doesn’t eat meat- only seafood. Each shop made us feel cared for and unique while Jane shared history and laughs along the way. Such a great addition to our stay in Tokyo!Written 11 March 2025
- julianasP1038CH0 contributionsCool night tour!We had such an amazing time at our food tours, we did Tokyo at Shinjuku with Wes learned about the history, the nightlife and had a very local Izakaya meal. In Osaka with Melissa, tried local food, good Sake. It was good fun around Dotonbori we were able to enjoy the city views , the fried specialties and had a great night out!Written 10 March 2025
- MPageSATX0 contributionsExcellent Eats + Really Bad Singing = an Awesome Evening! Our party of three enjoyed a fantastic evening with Ray! We learned a lot of fun facts and history about Tokyo, past and present. The Shibuya restaurants and menu options selected were perfect. Come hungry with an open mind; even the pickiest eater of our group cleaned his plate at every stop. Ray is very knowledgeable and clearly knows how to read his audience-- joining in with my husband's horrible jokes. We added on the karaoke after party. I highly recommend that as well. Ray took us to a place more akin to a recording studio, where we were the only ones in the room, ie. you could hear really bad singing up and down the hallway, but the sense of anonymity was freeing. Think about your songs in advance. The Arigato Japan Food Tour (Shibuya Street Food with Ray and karaoke) was our favorite while in Tokyo. Definitely add it to your itinerary!Written 9 March 2025
- 512pietj0 contributionsOur first okonomiyaki! We had a good time tasting different foods and drinks in Hiroshima with our guide Ryan. Had a bite of our first okonomiyaki and taiyaki, as well as wonderful sake! Ryan was friendly and happy to guide us around the city, as well as giving tips about Japanese culture like table manners. Thanks so much Ryan!Written 6 March 2025
- 626hederg0 contributionsExcellent tourThe tour was excellent, we really enjoyed it. The information provided by the tour guide, Yappy, was very informative and knowledgeable. It was also nice that he didn’t take us to the usual crowded touristy spots. I wouldn’t be embarrassed to recommend it to my friends and family. Good job, Arigato Travel, for providing tourists with such a unique experience.Written 5 March 2025
- Peacenik880 contributionsGood food and fascinating, too! This was a great food tour. Ryan is a native English speaker and is very knowledgeable and fun. He introduced us to a number of local specialties, including okonomyoki, locally brewed beer and yakitori fresh off the grill. Along the way, he pointed out some easily missed attractions, such as a pizza vending machine and a shop selling fine calligraphy pens. Highly recommended!Written 5 March 2025

We ate the best sushi (stand up sushi bar), delicious pork bone broth ramen, went to the coolest okonomiyaki restaurant, ate delicious yakitori, and topped it off with a warm custard filled pancake type treat! Finished with karaoke and Jane got us the BEST karaoke room overlooking a bustling street. She took pics of us the whole time through, too. Thanks Jane you were the best!!Written 28 February 2025

We had an incredible time on our arigato Japan food tour! It was such a great way to learn some history of the city and enjoy food with the locals. Jacob was an awesome guide and we would recommend him to anyone looking to do a food tour through Tokyo. We will be sure to rebook on our next travel to Tokyo.

I've done three Arigato Japan food tours, one in 2019, and two this year (2023). Not only were all of them fun and delicious, but they were all standout memories of my time in Japan.
Here's the thing. When you get back from Japan, everyone will ask you, "What was the coolest thing that you saw?" Unless you spent your entire trip in your hotel, you'll have no shortage of touristy sightseeing answers you can provide. But none of them will really convey how magical and awesome and otherworldly it is to spend time in Japan (especially Tokyo).
These food tours not only unlock food and sightseeing options that would otherwise be inaccessible to tourists, but they deliver the closest feeling I've come to a food travel show type or experience. The kind of show where the locals help you identify the tourist traps and pull back the curtain to reveal the genuine, delicious food they wish more people knew about.
More often than not, those standout food experiences have been in places I would have never thought to go to, or featured menus and signage I couldn't decipher on my own. Or, in a few cases, gorgeous restaurants tucked inside of office buildings whose existence is only indicated by a nondescript Japanese sign out. Unless a local shows these spots to you, there's simply no way you'll even know they exist, much less know what to order once you get there.
Needless to say, I highly recommend these tours. And when you get back home and someone asks you what the best part of your trip was, instead of reeling of the list of Instagram hotspots, you can tell them about that night you spent with a local guide eating and laughing your way through meals and drinks and desserts that all stand out as distinct memories you'll still remember years later.
The only warnings I'll give are that:
1. You may break a sweat when you're walking to all these places. I found it to be a great way to prepare my gut for each new destination, but if walking is not your thing then maybe skip this (and probably Tokyo too, since it's hard to avoid walking here).
2. You will probably get uncomfortably full. I don't think they want anyone walking away from these tours feeling like they didn't get enough to eat. I unlocked new stomachs I didn't know I had. It was worth it, but it helps to pace yourself early on.
p.s. Shout out to our Tokyo guides Yappy & Kumie, and Miyuke (Micky) in Kyoto.

Great introduction to local Japanese food in the Ginza district of Tokyo. The guide was excellent (together with his assistant) with just the right amount information without going over the top. Some interesting places visited, which you would not have normally found, and different types of food were experienced.

As this was our first visit to Japan, our travel agent booked this food tour for us and as such, I am writing the review on the basis of not k owing how much it cost.
We met our guide at the appointed time and very soon our ‘fellow foodies’ were gathered. One was a web adviser on Japan holidays and the other a travel agent from the Philippines. Our guide was Sandra, originally from Barcelona, but now residing in Japan. Although not a local, Sandra had clearly done her homework, and came across as being quite knowledgeable about Japan, so as well as some culinary knowledge she was able to impart interesting information about the Tokyo area.
We stopped at an interesting variety of places, but upon counting back there were 5 stops, one of which was to see a demo of green tee being brewed and another was to see a bakery place at which we were just provided with some history followed by a dry biscuit with the company logo on it. 2 beers or ‘local’ drinks were provided. We enjoyed the overall experience and guide Sandra was good but on writing the review and looking up the price….£186 per person, I was shocked and am unable to recommend as good value.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the overall experience and appreciated Sandra’s knowledge and insights. She works hard to create engaging and informative tours, and it’s great to know her efforts left a positive impression.
That said, we’re truly sorry to hear that you felt the tour did not provide the value you expected for the cost. We strive to offer an enriching experience that balances cultural insights, culinary exploration, and unique stops that guests might not discover on their own. Your comments about the number and nature of the stops, as well as the pricing, are valuable to us and will be shared with our team as we continue to refine our offerings.
We appreciate your honest feedback

To provide some context, I live near Vancouver BC where we have a wide variety of quality Japanese restaurants. We were not looking for an introduction to gyoza and sushi. We chose this tour as it seemed to offer a more sophisticated food experience.
Positives: guide was knowledgeable and spoke excellent English; first two stops were great and offered good food with the highlight being grilled/smoked bonito.
Negatives: we had to pay for a second drink (two drinks were supposed to be included we realized later). The last three stops were a cookie shop, tea shop and fruit daifuku shop. The cookie and tea shop just seemed like shopping stops and really didn't offer anything unusual if you've had green tea before. The daifuku shop was interesting and high-end, but three dessert stops out of 5 seemed lopsided. The other thing that was annoying is that we kept running into the same tour groups at the different eating venues, which didn't make this feel like a unique or carefully curated selection of eateries.
Given the number of restaurants in Tokyo I think a much better job of choosing venues should be possible and there should be at least three savoury stops before getting to the sweets.

The guide of this food tour was very nice and informative. We had no problems with him at all. The food tour consisted of 5 different venues; with what we thought was a high cost. However, with 5 different food venues we thought it would be worth it. The first two venues (seafood and noodle shops) were great and enjoyed by all. The third venue was a cookie/pastry shop where we were handed a cellophane wrapped thin dry biscuit/fortune like cookie; that was all. The fourth venue was a tea shop where we sampled 3 different small cups of green tea; took about 5 minutes (nothing else provided). The last venue was dessert and it was very nice. Basically, the tour was not worth the money based on venues 3 and 4.

Yappy led our tour of 9 people. He was fantastic and full of positive energy and information about the Ginza area and it’s history as well as Japan. We had some really good food with lots of variety. Vegetarians will find it hard though! The smaller venues are the best with lots of atmosphere.

A true highlight of our stay in Tokyo, our food tour in the Yurakucho and Ginza districts of the city was an unforgettable delight. Our guide Yappy instantly enthralled and entertained us with stories and fascinating details of the area and culture as we tasted sumptuous food at a variety of restaurants (restaurants we would never have found without Yappy’s expert guidance). I highly recommend this tour!

We loved our food tour with Shingeki! Delicious seared bluefin tuna, udon, Japanese sweets and much more, and all in spots that we never would have found on our own or been bold enough to venture into. Shingeki was a gracious, charming and informative guide. Our whole family (2 adults and 2 kids ages 18 and 12) loved the experience — highly recommend!

Not quite what I expected unfortunately. American guide (living in Japan & speaking Japanese) with too much focus on other stuff than food. Pretty basic information about the dishes and customs surrounding eating in Japan. The dishes were far from spectaculair and we ended getting an icecream in a shopping mall.. Would not recommend.

Thank you for your feedback, we take all comments very seriously. So sorry the experience was not what you were expecting. With the recent reopening some of the things we are working hard to make the food tours the best they can be. We will talk with our guide about the balance of information. The Hokkadio Soft cream is quite famous but maybe the information was not shared to explain that choice. We will review all your comments and do our best. Our passion is sharing our love for this country and the food. So we will work hard to improve. Thank you for the feedback. As you can see we have carried a great review ranking for a long time AND we only hope to surprise and delight on every tour. We will work to do better. please email us if you would like to discuss more what happened. And again we are reviewing the situation.

We stayed at the Park Hotel Shiodome -it was a short taxi ride to the meeting point in the Ginza. At the end of the tour we walked a few blocks back to the hotel.
If you are comfortable with the train system that would be a good option but we were not, so we took a taxi. You are staying quite a ways from the Ginza so a taxi will be fairly expensive

It was in English but the tours are run by expats and one of them might be speaking Spanish. I highly recommend sending them. A message on their website requesting a Spanish language tour. Good luck
