About
My dear friend,
Honestly I want to inform you about the whale sighting situation in the Mirissa area.
•Blue Whale: 25%
•Fin Whale: 50%
•Spinner Dolphins or Other Dolphins: 80%
•Other Animals: 50%
The reason we don't see whales here (low chance), In the last 5 years some speed boat operators illegally go to Whale Diving & Whale snorkeling. Even though we have informed our Coast Guard and Wildlife Department about this, no action has been taken yet. As a result, many whales have left our sea area.
In this situation, we can only do a nice boat safari. During the tour if you are lucky you can see Whales. We try our best to find them.
*** We stop our boat mid of tour 30 minutes for sea bath ( you have to bring necessary clothes for that)
under these conditions If you would like to do the tour you can book with us.
kind regard.

- curaprox070 contributionsOnly cruise I would do.The boat was great. The people were amazing. The captain really does care for whales and this is his passion. From all the ships we saw this is the only would I go on. The service was brilliant and when we saw another whale on the return, despite it taking more time we went and cruised with it while everyone else went to shore. We saw a blue whale, fin whale and lots of dolphins.Written 30 March 2024
- nipj0 contributionsPay a bit more for WWC... Worth it!My advice: pay the extra 20-ish% to go with WWC. Why?... Space! There's space to roam and get a railing when there's a sighting. You're out there for 4-5 hours, you'll want to be comfortable. Most of the other big boats were literally leaning over with all the passengers. Crew! They do really look after all the passengers. They gave my kids particular attention and I appreciated that. What's offered. Sure if you net out the cost difference it easily would cover the additional stuff you get (fruit, breakfast, roti) but you don't feel like this operation is cutting corners. They're just asking for a reasonable price/profit and delivering really good service. Thanks Manoj and Crew!!!🎉👍Written 3 February 2024

- Trasanorid0 contributionsGreatest whale watching tour in MirissaDay started early at 6.15 but we were fist ones out. Captain and the grew were really professional. They were able to find fist dolphins with half an hour. They recognizeed smallest signs on the water to locate whales and other wildlife. Also captain explained passengers what they were looking at the see and what they were doing. At some points we were waiting for some time but captain explained all the reasons why we had to do so. We managed do see dolphins and turtles several times. Highlight of the day wss that we managed so see finwhale twice within 100m of the boat and once about 500m away. Most definitely we got the best view of the day compared to other boats because of the professional grew. Also there group size was nice and small and not too overcrowded.Written 27 January 2024
- hardchoice_easylife0 contributionsAwesome morning !Difficult to choose the right boat because of the large number of companies but WWC was for sure THE one to go with ! We were welcomed on board with a nice cup of tea, sandwiches and banana. Due to the rough ocean conditions at the beginning, some passengers were sick but the crew was super fast to react. We were lucky to see a large number of dolphins and tunas, a turtle and finally, the whale-shark ! Amazing Captain with a huge enthusiasm supported by a top crew team. Thanks to all of you for making this morning one of the highlights of our trip in Sri Lanka. Cedric & SophieWritten 29 December 2023
- 0liviaMills0 contributionsFun and ethical tour!We had a great time! We really appreciated how the team was very respectful towards the animals. Other boats were speeding and not respecting the whales space which was so sad to see! We also loved that the boat wasnt too crowded. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable!Written 24 November 2023
- desir_ep5790 contributionsGreat experience!Great trip with Whale Watching Club. We managed to spot both dolphins and whales! Amazing! - Speed B0 contributionsNow off season ( end of April to mid of July )💯WWC is really a very good team because when we told them that we wanted to go whale watching, they told us that they don't do those trips because the sea is very rough and bad weather these days. We were also warned not to go whale watching. However, we ignored WWC's advice on another vessel to go whale watching and it was a fruitless trip. This was noted thanks to WWC's honest advice🙏Written 13 May 2023
- Departure391879819750 contributionsMust read before whale wat watching in MirissaThe see is really very rough and immediately they returned the boat to the shore. I see lot of foreigners with 1 or 2 year old kids whom suffered a lot. Almost everyone in the boat vomitted. They should warn the travelers about this. Instead your tour agent and boat operators having secret pact to lure the money. It is better to enjoy the beaches of mirissaWritten 11 May 2023

Dedicated captain and crew makes the experience extra special. It’s an early start but it’s a great experience.
The captain and the crew are so attentive. Breakfast is served once boarded. We then went off for the adventure.
We saw many dolphins and the crew members were guiding all of us where to look… we saw a big sea turtle and then we headed off to where the whale was.
The captain was super pro as he wasn’t crowding with other boats and kept some space between us the onlookers and the whale. It was rather sad to see how some other boats chased after the whale without much breathing space for the whale and also how they crisscrossed each other in close distance just to get a closer look at the whale…
Once most of the boats left for the day, our captain said “just give me 10 min and we will see the whale again now we are almost on our own. I know you will only come once.” And just like that, we saw the whale within 10 min and it was a clear sight without any boats fighting for space. All done in a calm manner.
Our boat is relatively smaller compared with others we come across but we are glad that’s the case as there is more room for everyone.
Fruit is served half way through the trip and at the end there is also coconut roti. It’s just the perfect “pick me up” before we can have a quick dip in the sea.
The crew is attentive and helpful through the trip. It’s a long half a day but is worth it.

I would honestly say if you are considering a whale watching trip in Mirissa don't look anywhere else. Manoj and his team were outstanding in every respect. Be prepared for an early start but that is perfect once you are up, as the roads to get there were eerily quiet and Manoj's boat was the first to leave. That and the fact we were NOT squeezed in like sardines (as some boats appeared to be) meant we could easily switch from side to side, aft to stern and indeed upper deck to lower deck very easily. We had plenty to eat and drink all morning and the time flew by. Our first sighting was of a local fishing boat hooking and landing a large Marlin. This was followed quickly by scores of dolphin right in front of the boat, they seemed to be having such fun. Then there were two huge manta rays about 50 meters of the side of the boat and then we had a tip off from local fisherman of a Fin whale (second biggest to Blue). I have to be honest and say all the whale watching boats (I counted nearly 20 including some very annoying small speedboats) made for the same spot and we saw the whale on about 5 occasions and Manoj was brilliant at holding back and anticiapting where it would be and not just charging off straight for the spout when it was spotted.
The staff were always respectful and they had detailedinformation on everything we saw. Most unusually we not only saw two large turtles very, very close by, but they were mating! We finished with a fabulous swim off the boat and jumping off the upper deck like excited teenagers
All in all, a truly memorable day. Thank you Manoj and thank you to your amazing team (thanks also for the T shirt, wearing it with pride)

We decided to use the services of ‘whale watching club’ last week after looking at the reviews and it’s the best decision we made. I highly recommend them because they are professional, maintain a good boat and are very honest.
We’d booked the tour for Sunday morning and on Saturday they informed us very honestly about how there were no whale sightings the two previous days in case we wanted to back out and updated us once a whale sighting was made.
But that’s not the best part.
My friend had extreme sea sickness and they took such good care of her for the whole 5 hours and ensured she was still included in the experience.
They made sure each person saw the whales and dolphins up close and provided good quality food on board as well.
Unlike other boats they didn’t chase the whales, didn’t overcrowd the boats and maintained safety for everyone.
100/10 for the value of service they provided and their kindness ✨

Fantastic on every front. Boat is clean, plenty of space for everyone to have a seat and have a clear view, not packed in like other boats we saw. Breakfast and multiple tasty snacks provided. Plenty of water available via drinking fountain (no plastic bottles were used all day, even Coca Cola in glass bottles to be more eco friendly). Staff were AMAZING. Our lovely captain is a real expert, predicting when the whale would be popping up, while respecting the whale’s space and not chasing. We saw spinner dolphins, turtles, flying fish, manta rays and multiple sightings of a Fin whale. Gorgeous.
Staff were so helpful and professional, making sure everyone could see, helping people when the boat was choppy, grabbing one guest’s hat that flew off - they were just the best. The team should be very proud of the service they provide, we’d recommend this tour to anyone.

Highly recommend! We went on a day tour with Captain Manoj and his crew. They are all passionate wildlife lovers, respectful towards animals, and very knowledgeable about their behavior and habitat. We were lucky to encounter a magnificent blue whale, and our captain skillfully predicted where it would surface next.
Our tour started 30 minutes earlier than others, giving us the opportunity to be out at sea before the chaos of other whale-watching boats began.
Unfortunately, the chase itself was quite an unpleasant experience, with 10 different boats pursuing a single whale when it surfaced.
Nevertheless, our captain remained respectful of the animals and managed to provide us with an incredible experience.
And the dolphins along the way were amazingly playful!

My husband and I booked a tour with these guys after reading previous reviews based on their ethical approach and were so pleased we did. Communication was great from initial enquiry to final information. The boat was very spacious as passenger numbers are limited so there was plenty of room to move around and get good views of the marine life. Tea and coffee were served shortly after boarding and everyone was offered sea sickness tablets. (I have never felt sea sick even during some very rough crossings in the English Channel but my husband and I had brought our own, having read previous posts, which we took with our breakfast box shortly after leaving our hotel some 2 hours earlier. Fortunately the sea was very calm and we probably did not need to have taken them.) Shortly after departing we were served a very nice breakfast consisting of a fried egg sandwich, a sausage, slice of fresh pineapple and a banana. It wasn't long before we were delighted by the antics of a pod of dwarf spinner dolphins, the first of many. We also saw tuna, flying fish and a fin whale twice! Manoj and his crew were happy to impart their knowledge of the marine life we saw and Manoj kept a respectable distance from the whale, not chasing or hounding it like many of the other boats but because of his experience he was able to predict where the whale was likely to resurface after diving and we were privileged to see it appear just metres from the boat on the second occasion. Amazing given that most of the other boats were still some distance off. On the way back to Mirissa we were served with fresh fruit, a coconut roti with sambal and a soft drink. Water is also freely available on board from a large 20l dispenser. The boat also briefly moors just outside the harbour for anyone wanting to take a quick dip.
We had an absolutely brilliant experience and would not hesitate to recommend. Whale sightings are not guaranteed but Manoj will give you the best chance.
Just a couple of things to note......passenger details are required before departure including passport numbers but you are not required to take passports with you, also payment is by cash only, they do not have a card machine.

We sincerely thank the captain and crew for an amazing whale watching experience.
We wanted to acknowledge the professionalism of the Whale Watching Club. The vessel was comfortable and clean, and we were surprised by the quality and range of snacks provided during our time in the water.
We were grateful that the boat stayed an appropriate distance from the whales, unlike a number of the other groups out on the day.
We saw a large pod of dolphins, a sea turtle, 2 huge manta rays and several dolphins, one with her calf.
The crew were informative and made sure that everyone had a chance to see what they’d found.

Comfortable seats and well maintained vessel. Lots of deck space to stand and watch the ocean. Driver Manoj patiently waited until we spotted dolphins and finally a whale. Once we spotted it, he wasn’t in a hurry to turn back, but allowed us time to soak in the whole experience without chasing the whale or going too close to it. Breakfast was hygienic and satirising. A bowl of pineapple was offered mid journey and a lovely Roti and Sambal towards the end, along with sodas. Water was available on the boat, with paper cups. We were given a short description of the dolphins and whale. Thoroughly satisfying trip!

We researched for a sustainable and marine friendly tour and whale watching club did not disappoint - there was no chasing whales and the captain and crew commented on the bad behaviour of other boats. We were fortunate to see fin whales and dolphins and it was a highlight of our trip. We also loved the swimming on the way back to the harbour. We also had breakfast, snacks and water on board.
Many of the other boats we observed chasing the whales and getting far too close and then disappeared back to the harbour after an hour. The captain clearly knows how to track the whales safely rather than just descending on where the other boats are. There was also around 25 us on the large boat rather than being crammed in like we observed on other boats.
If you want an ethical company, this is the one.
