    The Uluwatu Deathtrap
I guess we've all become a little more relaxed about Covid. Some clearly more than others. How many people can you fit in a stadium or theater before it's too much - even in non-Covid times? Forgetting about the transmission of virii or disease and just looking at basic health and safety? And as a resident of Australia I'm the first to put my hand up and say Australia as a country errs well on the side of caution when it comes to OHS. The exact figure is probably theoretical and no doubt varies from country to country. But at the very least, the stairways should be clear at all times. That's just common sense. Because when things go wrong and there's no safe way for people to exit? Theaters turn into deathtraps. We came an hour early to ensure we got the seats we wanted. An hour of sitting in the blazing sun so we can see that sun sink below the horizon as day bleeds into night. And over that hour people just kept coming. And coming. My elderly parents, after months of convincing, finally decided to come with us to Bali and the Kecak at Uluwatu show is just one of those right of passage shows that every Bali tourist should experience once. But ten minutes before the show is scheduled to begin my father is asking me exactly how many people will be watching this show? I tell him at least the stairs should be clear. But even after the show begins the people just keep on coming. A literal busload of people turn up 10 minutes into the show - all dressed in tumeric yellow traditional clothing. People are constantly walking in front of the seated crowd, blocking your view of the show and talking as they figure out seating. The walkways disappear almost immediately and yet people just keep flooding in. We're rammed up against the heat and the sweat of strangers and even the Kecak can't deafen the constant white noise of chatter that blankets the show so it's like watching a tv show with the volume on 80 percent when the actors try to talk. And for those who have seen the show before [spoiler alert] you know what's coming, so you spend the leadup planning an escape route in your head should the unthinkable happen. At a climactic point in the show the main actor is surrounded in a circle of fiber that is set on fire. A LOT of fire. A ring of kecak actors are tasked with fire safety, holding straw brooms. And he explodes - kicking soccerball sized fireballs in every direction. As each ball goes into the air it's picked up and spread by the wind. Random clusters of fire splintering into random blooms of embers showering in every direction. A ball of fire goes over a wall and for a moment it looks like a tree is going to catch on fire as the flames spread out. My father sustained head trauma in a road rage attack a year ago. A combination of the heat, the sitting on concrete for an hour and the overcapacity crowd catch up with him all at once when the show ends. He cannot see when he rises to his feet and feels dizzy as he tries to make his way down the stairs. My mother has a heart condition - which would not be as much of an issue based on the crowd in my head from 4 years ago when we came here last. I lead them through an ocean of people moving in every direction up an unlit path to the entrance. Our driver, in an effort to better position himself to exit the show has moved an is not where I am expecting him to be. In the flood of cars and people the task of finding him in time. So I am forced to find a seat for both of them and leave them there as I go and look for the driver. It literally feels like the worst thing I can do and I feel like I'm going to have to work pretty damn hard to avoid a serious health event. A few days later my mother finds she has Covid 19. A virus all of us have managed to avoid since day one. And based on our movements there's a 99% chance we got it from Uluwatu. So there was a fire burning it's way through the crowd the whole time - we just didn't know it. But the moment that busload of tourists turned up at the beginning of the show we resigned ourselves to the possibility of it in our heads based sorely on the overwhelming miasma of sweating bodies. Simple human greed. Packing humans like sardines during a pandemic to make a rupia with no regard for the clear and obvious risks it posed to the audience. The Uluwatu deathtrap.

We booked via klooked for a sunset time slot but we weren't able to secure sits because it was fullybooked but the organizer said that we are schedule for the 7:00 show. While waiting there is a massive crowd along the cliff taking pictures and as the night came to close, the crowd were getting larger.

We had no idea where the theater was if not for the smoke billowing from the first performance and that's where we realized that the people in the area was not only taking sunset pics but was already queueing for the next performance.

No signage and very chaotic, we did experience some tourists overtaking our lane because there was no numbering scheme, ushers or even stanchions. I supposed they should have improved this at this point because kecak is a very in demand activity in Bali so a big group of people is expected to come daily.

The performance was amazing but there are disrespectful tourists who smoked vape while the show was on going and some also left before the show ended.

As far as I know there are other places that offer a tradtional dance which is probably more solemn and less crowded.

The Kecak dance was such a unique experience! Watching it at sunset made it even more magical. Instead of instruments, a group of men sit in a circle and chant "cak-cak-cak" in a way that creates an amazing rhythm.

The performance tells a story from the Ramayana, with characters like Rama, Sita, and Hanuman in colorful costumes. The fire in the middle adds so much drama, especially during the more intense moments.

It felt like being part of something truly special. If you’re visiting Bali, I highly recommend seeing it—you won’t forget it!

Purchasing the ticket online results in a shorter line to get in, and ensured we got the time slot we wanted as the 6pm show was sold out when we arrived. The performance was more storytelling than fire dance. We hired a taxi from Nusa Dua, much cheaper than tours with transportation. Also, there is more than one performance each night, but the only one advertised is the 6pm sunset show.

Continues chanting is boring after a while. The main show is nothing spectacular and certainly not worth sitting on stone benches in an extremely hot and overcrowded environment. Only highlight was watching the sunset but this can be done at numerous places in the island. Couldn’t wait for it to end.

The performance was absolutely amazing. Everything about it was spot on; the music/chanting, dance, storytelling, costumes, etc. I was in absolute awe. However, it was completely ruined by the audience around me. People talking, phones not on silent, toddlers and parents chatting away at full speaking voice volume. There were two couples in front of me; 3 of them were recording (surely just get one person to record and then that could be shared with everyone?) and the fourth was on FaceTime with 3 people, where we could hear their conversation! There was also an idiot shouting “speak in English!” multiple times as well. It was disgraceful and disrespectful. I am extremely disappointed in the organisers and their lack of control and authority over the audience. It ruined the evening. What’s more, it felt like only my girlfriend and I were the only ones trying to get everyone to be quiet so we could enjoy the show.
I highly recommend this show to visitors, however I hope this review resonates with people who have gone and watched the show, and that this hopefully prompts positive change for future shows.

Excellent cultural experience. Learn the culture of the people in this love story brought to life with bright colors, pyrotechnics, and singing. Family friendly. If you go at sunset you enjoy the beautiful view from a seated position before the show starts. Bring your sunglasses though it gets bright. Water is provided.

I recently tried out this online booking service and found the WhatsApp chat feature with the staff to be extremely efficient and responsive. It made the booking process seamless and easy. Additionally, the prices offered on this platform were notably cheaper compared to other online booking websites. Highly recommend for a hassle-free and budget-friendly experience!

The cliff views of the place are amazing, however, there are WAY too many people to even take one photo .. we weren’t even able to get in the line to see the dance because they were too overcrowded & we couldn’t even get in !!

The temple is the most disgusting place I’ve been to .. I’ve been to many worship and holy places around the world, but this one surprisingly smelt SO BAD I almost threw up so many times. I don’t recommend even going there to be honest, skip this one it’s not worth it, they do these dances in other places that are much cleaner.

Traditional dance in an idyllic location. Bring wet weather gear or sunscreen/shade as the amphitheatre is exposed to all elements. Performance is interesting but makes more sense if you read the info provided when you buy your ticket. Can be repetitive to some. Small children may he afraid of masks/costumes or fire. 45mins in length is at its maximum threshold for some. Otherwise a good cultural experience. If you have a performance closer to you, save yourself the trek to Uluwatu. Unfortunately our evening was wet & overcast so we didn’t see any magical sunset. Temple visit was marred by the somewhat aggressive monkeys. Hold onto your spectacles, jewellery & phones. There’s quite a few monkeys here. Beware: Women who are menstruating are not permitted in the temple. Local food vendors outside are cost effective & helpful. If you’re not local, The drive into Uluwatu is worth the visit.

Not worth it in the slightest.

I went with an open mind. We arrived early to look at the temple which the views are spectacular without comparison. Apart from the 2 diggers and construction machinery that’s cutting away the cliff so tourists can get to another beach when there’s loads of perfectly good beaches already. Anyway I digress. The temple it self is pretty underwhelming and long and crowed and hot. No where to buy water etc. THe monkeys well I thought they were funny and probably my highlight of the whole thing. If you listen and read put your hats phones and glasses away then they don’t bother you.

After an hour we queued for the dance the 7pm showing. And it was complete unorganised chaos. I’ve never witnessed anything so completely moronic in all my life. Pushing shoving 4-5 different queues. For over an hour. Started late finished late. Seating was uncomfortable. Packed so much people sat on the floor. Waaayyy over sold. The dance itself was ok. No much fire involved most of the time was just dancing around the same 4-5 torches. Costumes were great and the actors were great but on the whole pretty boring. And ruined from everything else. We left early as it wasn’t worth going through all that again to try and get transport out of there and everyone leaving at the same time. No matter where you are travelling from don’t waste your time. There are plenty of other cultural things to do where you don’t have all the s**t
