Itinerary
- 1Your guide, a passionate local landscape photographer will take you to his favourite spots for landscape photography. Initially, he will discuss with you an itinerary based on your interests and skills, light and weather on the day. Destinations can include: Glenorchy, The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Skippers Canyon, Gibbston. Queenstown is surrounded by incredibly beautiful, magnificent locations: stunning glacial lakes, towering mountain ranges, windswept, tussock clad alpine high country, icy blue rivers, glittering waterfalls, rugged canyons and gorges. Pristine landscapes, untouched by humans and places that show the struggle to tame the land. Quaint gold mining settlements like Arrowtown and Cromwell and fruit and wine growing areas to the east. Whichever direction you choose, your guide will take you to the best places to capture the splendour and magnificence. You will be mentored on finding great shots, composition and exposure to help you capture the majesty and beauty.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 774marjk0 contributionsA remarkable experienceThe West Coast and Skippers Canyon tours were fantastic - and fun. Martin and Shawn got us to incredible locations for memorable photographs at just the right time of day. I am an experienced photographer, but Martin inspired me to try new things as he pointed out different compositions and points of view. My friend is a novice with a new camera and she received patient assistance. While the tours were well planned to take in the major landmarks, we also stopped for spontaneous photo opportunities. Highly recommended.Written 14 March 2025

- HiltonJLuke0 contributionsMust do Skippers Canyon photo tourI recently did the Skippers Canyon photography tour with Martin and it was sensational. Not only is Martin an experienced photographer, he also knows a lot of history about Queenstown and Skippers Canyon. Martin picked me up from my accommodation just outside of Queenstown in a new, very clean and comfortable car. We then made our way up Coronet Peak, stopping at a few locations as we went up in height. We then went down the Skippers Canyon track. The scenery is spectacular, but the drive is precarious—at all times I felt very safe with Martin driving. We stopped at lots of locations for all different types of photos. Near the bottom of the canyon we stopped for coffee and a muffin (both yum) before we continued along and the Shotover River came into view. All up, we were away for about 5 hours and loved every minute. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to get spectacular photos while In Queenstown. Martin is a personable and exemplary host 10/10!Written 12 January 2025
- O5162JRdanf0 contributionsWonderful Photo TourMartin was awesome. He customized our trip for my desires and skill level. I appreciated his knowledge of a photography form I was new too (landscape). He was a wonderful conversationalist willing to share his love of Queenstown.Written 22 December 2024
- rodi5720 contributionsTwist and mistThe Queenstown region has many stunning photography locations. A Remarkable Imagery tour of Skippers Canyon will ensure that you see many of the very best of these. Martin knows each of the many twists and turns along Skippers Road. He let me explore different compositions for myself whilst also providing great suggestions for different angles and techniques. A bit of rain and lots of mist added moodiness to the pictures that I took away. I had a very enjoyable morning, left with a set of images that I really like, and improved the way I think when I take photos.Written 9 October 2024
- ZeeTee20130 contributionsIdeal Skipper!Skipper’s canyon is not an easy place to get to, so decided to go with a tour operator. And a ‘photo tour’ was a bonus. Martin was great, providing some history as well as some useful photography tips along the way, besides safely navigating the difficult road. Highly recommend!!Written 4 September 2024
- W1265SVterrip0 contributionsWonderful photography dayHad an amazing day with Martin. His knowledge of the local areas and his advice on photography was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble for Martin, stopping when photo opportunities presented themselves. I have come away with some beautiful photos from around Queenstown and increased knowledge in landscape photography. Thank you for a wonderful day Martin, I hope to be back to join you on another fabulous workshop/day.Written 8 August 2024
- 446lexr0 contributionsPhoto Opportunities in every direction. Thanks Martin Kohn.Had a fabulous 5 hours with Martin on Skippers Road in my visit to Skippers Canyon. The 5 hours with Martin was great value for money. Martin's knowledge of the area was excellent and I learnt a lot about the Canyon and it's history. I went there to see somewhere which is dificult to visit with out a 4WD. I will gladly seek out Martin on my next visit to Queenstown.Written 28 May 2024
- Li Y0 contributionsAmazing experience!Martin is the best guide I have ever met. He is a professional landscape photographer. He shared a lot of photography tips with us. He has a strong passion about landscaping photography. He is very knowledgeable about the local history. He told us a lot about the old gold mining days. He knows a lot of secret photo shooting spots and stopped the car several times to let us take photos. His driving skill is great. We felt very safe. His communication was great. We had very nice conversations with him. We liked his narratives very much! The Skippers Canyon itself is absolutely beautiful! The scenic road is gorgeous. The experience is amazing!Written 22 March 2024
- K2737VBsandraw0 contributionsAwesome - highly recommendableWe went to two different locations. First we went to the Remarkables and did some very good shots of the area from high up and some artsy shots of a winding street. After that we took Skippers Road and wow, what a great landscape. It was even better than the first location. Martin was great and took the time to show me how to take the best pictures. I can highly this tour. Time was over way too soon.Written 6 March 2024
- Andrew P0 contributionsA great day out photographing the area around QueenstownThe day was well spent with Martin showing us a number of locations around Queenstown that were would definitely not have found on our own. He was very knowledgeable about the area and can accomodate photographers at any level. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone considering doing it.Written 5 December 2023
- GrandTour150253047850 contributionsGreat way to get up close and personal with Queenstown! This is a great option for someone looking to get a "local's perspective" of Queenstown and take a trip to lesser-known spots. I was (am) new to photography (I bought my first camera specifically for this trip) and Martin was a patient teacher. He was great at adapting his approach to my level of skill. During the day, not only did I learn and practice different techniques to compose photographs and learn some of the features of my camera, but I got to visit many "off the beaten path" spots to photograph! This trip left me feeling like I had really gotten to know Queenstown and the surrounding areas. Martin was very flexible, friendly and helpful. I couldn't recommend this trip more to someone looking to get to know Queenstown and capture some great pictures!Written 14 August 2023

Very knowledgeable and personable as well We didn’t rent a camera but Martin was very accommodating regarding taking photos at various spot on the tour. We had another couple who almost canceled but we’re very glad they did the tour. I would highly recommend this tour! My guide was Martin, and he really made my experience wonderful. He drove us around to lots of different beautiful places in and around Queenstown, places that I would not have seen otherwise. He gave me some tips about how to use my specific camera, but he spent most of his time teaching me about composition, which I very much appreciated! I learned so much and I think my photos will be much improved after my tour. I've already been putting the lessons into practice, which shows what a great teacher Martin is! His positive energy was infectious and I loved how excited he got about the photos I was taking. Overall, this was a great tour and one I would highly recommend!

We booked a photo tour of areas that most people wouldn’t go, to capture unique images. We were highly delighted with not only the tour locations but the personalised and engaging explanations of the flora, fauna, local stories and histories en route. Martin, our driver and guide; was excellent tutoring, driving and advising on images. We went off-road into stunning high country which offered excellent picture opportunities, can’t wait to process. Summer was brilliant, would love to return in winter! Highly recommended and would love to repeat with Martin again if back in New Zealand.

Thanks for your kind comments. I really enjoyed spending the day with you. We really got to see how the weather can add so much to the landscapes in this part of New Zealand. The clouds and light made the high country views even more special. I'm looking forward to catching up with both of you again.

Thanks for your kind words. Although the weather was ‘INTERESTING’, you were willing to try new things. I think we turned the conditions to our advantage to capture some really moody scenes around Glenorchy.

My wife and I were absolutely thrilled with this day tour. Martin, our tour guide, did an outstanding job. He took us to places that we would not have gone on our own. One such place was Skippers Canyon. We would never have driven that ourselves. The scenery was magnificent!
He also showed us photo tips on our smartphones that were very helpful; features we didn't know about.
The tour was money and time well spent. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you, Martin.
Kind regards, Dave and Helen Horner, Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA.

I arrived in Queenstown in the morning, and did not want to waste half a day so I booked the half day tour. Turned out to be a great decision! Martin is a phenomenal photographer, and knew the area really well. Learned some cool photography pointers as well! We went to Skippers Canyon which is just an amazing place to see and take photos. The only thing I didn't like about my tour was it was too short!!! If I end up coming back to Queenstown, I will definitely book a full day tour and see the other spots.

Is there time to see Lake Wanaka and the Wanaka tree? We're a party of 2 but I am the one with the camera. Is the price the same for both of us?
Written 9 April 2018
The Wanaka Tree is about an hour and a quarter drive from Queenstown. Our trips to Wanaka certainly take in the famous tree, but it is best photographed around dawn or sunset. We would have to make a very early start or shift the your to later to catch the golden hour. This would be feasible in the winter months (April-July)when the days are short. Our tours are a great guided tour of the region and we are always happy to host non-photographers. Prices are the same for all participants.
