- Jet3595423342500A must do activityWe did the ultimate trip and it was literally the best even though we had a cold southerly wind but the weather was dry. The scenery is fantastic and the rail carts are the best way to see it. We were well fed with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. The overnight at Whangamomona was excellent as was the dinner and breakfast. Our guide Lincoln was tops, full of info and help when needed as was Dave on the first day and Jo on the second, they are all a credit to the company. All in all a trip I would do again.
- simonoL2305QY00A great day !The drive down from Auckland is so nice, Taumarunui is a special place to me as it is so central / pivotal to so many great places. We were greeted by Deb who made us feel at home in a minute, the motel is lovely and clean and fresh and well located. Cara took us on our tour as was a gem ! So much knowledge and passion for NZ tourism that is backed up with experience. We had a great yarn about Te Anau And Doubtful Sound where she is from. Lunch was a really nice hearty kiwi style help yourself provided by the great staff out at Tokirima. Then we met Ray ! Wow ! He knows nearly everything about the area and most of the people too. What a wealth of knowledge and experience along with being a true gentleman and good kiwi bloke all in one ! An amazing day and my thanks to all the great staff at FWA. ! There is some good food in town too, ask and you will find !
- Companion1387942216200A day to rememberWe had a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed the tunnels and the lovely scenery (in fact the whole experience) The lunch and morning tea was great too. The staff were knowledgeable and very friendly.
- Global2521100Unique Kiwi experienceYou know even if it rains a little, this experience is something that is worth every cent. Our journey, like all, was well arranged with excellent guides with loads of interesting history and stories. We did the two-day ride and enjoyed every moment.
- O5587DTwendym00Forgotten World created with love, creative care and fun all the way.Fabulous! Brilliant & amazing! Everything! What a great innovative use of disused railway. Extremely informative guide & brilliant notice boards so wonderfully configured. Wonderful home cooked morning ‘ afternoon tea foods, creative & fresh as they come lunch: even the old codger who served morning tea: really authentic brillance. …. 🤩
- Excursion3342797028200Perfect day out.We took our American friends on the all day Whanga to Taumarunui trip. Wish we hadn't waited so long to do it. What a fantastic day with fantastic people running out. Couldn't ask for better guides and drivers etc. Our friend videoed most of the trip to take back with him. That is our 2nd excursion with Whanga would do it again. Thank you one and all.
- Roving1131913076600A must do experienceA "must do"trip & a great company running it, very well organised. Our tour guides on Tuesday were fun & very informative about the different areas where we stopped.
- Explore6176923514200Golf Rail Adventure - a "to die for" experienceThis was a "bucket list" venture and it didn't disappoint! We are both rail enthusiasts, so the concept of rolling along 82km of rail, through 20 tunnels in NZ's best scenery was a "to die for" experience. The team was exceptional in catering for all our needs. Even though its was a nice sunny day (23 deg C), we appreciated the advice to take our windcheaters and woollies for the tunnels. 10/10, Forgotten World! Rob and Sandy
- 18hjw00something different in NZ that is extremely well runHad a great time on the rail & river activity, something different to do in NZ Very friendly staff & guides that couldn't do enough for you stayed at the twin rivers motel, while an old school motel it was extremely clean and comfortable
- Coastal5763661129000Priceless, absolutely recommend the half day River and Rail tripYou guys are the best. From a hearty breakfast to start our half day River and Rail experience, to the friendly staff who kept us informed all the way through the our journey, to the stops where your guide explained the history of the places/tunnels/tracks, to the yummy morning tea, and lunch in quite simply one of the most peaceful places I've been in in NZ. And to finish off with a trip on the river. Priceless. Absolutely recommend this journey
- Culture5662960060400Knowledgeable & engaged guides make the differenceAmazing views, fun transport, and the guides were both knowledgeable and engaged. They were really interested in our history as a family in the area, and even took notes to add to what they already knew about our family. They couldn't have done more to ensure we had a wonderful time.
- annemareet202100Unforgettable!The Forgotten World Adventure we did will not be forgotten! We got picked up and taken to the beautiful Lauren’s Lavender Farm and purchased all our Christmas pressies! Then completed the Tokirima Taster-a fun rail journey in a buggy which we drive ourselves-over bridges, through historic tunnels and through beautiful Taumaranui landscape. We got a full run down of the history from Erica our amazing guide with fun stories and lots of interesting facts. We have learnt so much about his area. Thank you to all the staff who made our trip so memorable-Erica, Selena, Dave and Jo! You were all so lovely to spend a day with.
- Kperry546500Well done, highly recommended! This was so much fun! We did the half day trip and absolutely loved it. Everything from our arrival to check in and then the shuttle over to the carts was great. And then off we went on a fabulous trip along some retired rail lines across bridges and through tunnels with a few stops along the way - even a tea break with some lovely homemade treats. And the lunch at the end of our trip was great. It was so much fun and the guides are super knowledgeable and friendly! Don't hesitate to book this!
- r0sie5600Awesome day outWell organised relaxing day learning history of area. Guide was very knowledgeable and fun to be with
- Coastal5255561035300An amazing experience from the naughty family. Our experience of our family trip was very professional, super friendly and accommodated extremely well for our needs. The over all team was just amazing and could crack a joke with them. The accommodation was really comfortable and housekeeping was done daily. The excursions were very informative, fun with a lot of laughs. We would highly recommend the experience, well worth it.

Truly a neat experience and a must to do in central North Island.
From time of booking via telephone, staff have been helpful, thoughtful and accommodating our needs.
Stayed first night at Whangamomona Lodges, enjoyed a excellent night in the Pub meeting locals and the president of the Republic.
Tour along the forgotten rail in our golf cart transport was great, with regular stops a defunct rail stops.
Lots of history learnt.

A long day but very enjoyable one. The scenery is superb, the cart rides fun and the stops for lunch and coffee breaks welcome and very good too. our host ,Moi was a truly superb guide. He is so knowledgeable but also has a great sense of humour and takes great care to ensure everyone feels welcome and looked after. He is clearly a real asset to the tour operator .

We were part of a large family group to take the carts on this 20-tunnel trip - even the teenagers enjoyed the outing, especially when they could 'drive' the carts. Well-run tour and clear instructions and informative guide. Apart from the relaxing nature of the trip and the scenery, the catering for morning and afternoon tea and lunch was well above expectation. Despite being off the beaten track, we were well fed with hearty food and homebaking. Nice day out.

Our FWA team thanks you for the review and the 4 stars. We are all so pleased you and your family had a great day out, relaxing as you traveled along the rails stopping off to listen to the guides stories of the area. Our home baking does get mentioned alot, so Jan will be thrilled you enjoyed the slice and loaf. Perhaps one day we'll see you again out on our rails. Cheers

The whole trip was great, its hard to say a favourite. Learning about the history of area was an excellent aspect of the trip. The rail carts were an awesome way to experience the rail in this area of NZ, what a feat of engineering it took to lay the track, dig tunnels, create bridges etc and all by hand. Our tour guide Ray was a fountain of knowledge, it was great to have a local that had lived and worked in the area all his life and experienced the changes over time. The scenery was breathtaking, the NZ bush is a real treasure. The trip gave us a real feel for the hard work that farmers would have experienced to clear the land and farm the area from scratch. We had great food along the way, home baking is definitely the way to go. The motel accommodation at Taumaranui was also excellent and so handy to everything. All in all we had a wonderful trip and would highly recommend it to anyone. We plan to return to do other day trips as advertised.

What a great day riding the carts on Saturday, across little bridges over creeks and deep under the hills, through the 20 tunnels, across farmland, admiring what was left of the stands of Kahikatea, the vestiges of early settlement. Being the odd person on the tour I was lucky enough to get the passenger seat in the tour guide's cart. Having been on several guided tours overseas, I was impressed with our guide Luke, who was knowledgeable and professional and when clearing a part of the track showed me a fossilised pipi he had just picked up explaining that these hills had once been the floor of the sea. Such a great experience.

Thank you for the review and the 5 stars, Luke will be so thrilled you had a great day out with him on the rails, he would have been chuffed to bits having you in his cart, so he could share more stories with you. The Tangarakau Gorge is spectacular and the fossils are a great find, so we are pleased you saw one. Perhaps we'll see you again out on our rails.

The Forgotten World Adventure team really looked after us last week. From when we got picked up from Omaka Lodge, driven back to Forgotten World Adventures base in Taumarunui to join the rest of the group who were riding the carts on the forgotten world railway, driven to the start of the rail cart tour at Okahukura, driven to the Whangamomona Hotel at the end of the Rail Cart Tour, then picked up again the next morning and returned back to Omaka Lodge. Nothing was too much trouble for the red bus driver, Dale. Cahil & Paul in the lead and Tommo bringing up the rear, as "tail end Charlie". The staff certainly knew the history of the area. It didn't matter if there was only 4 of us, or 29. They treated us special and stopped often to tell us the history of the area where we stopped the carts. They even provide blankets on the carts, as it got cold in the tunnels. Morning tea & lunch was provided - thanks for catering for my Gluten Free needs. I would highly recommend booking any tour with Forgotten World Adventures. A great way to see the countryside in the Forgotten World.

An excellent tour with experienced guides who give you a great insight into the region. Ray had a wonderful local knowledge of the history of this area and was very informative. Nice added touches with morning and afternoon tea and a ploughmans lunch. Would thoroughly recommend going on any of these tours.

Thank you for the feedback and the 5 stars, our FWA team does appreciate them. We are all so thrilled you had a great experience with us and enjoyed Rays tall tales and true from his legendary past. We'll leave you to decide which were which. The baking is lovely and Jan does all the slices and loaves used out on the rails and will be happy you enjoyed her efforts.

What a wonderful way to spend a couple of day away. Ray and Lisa were fabulous guides with a wealth of local knowledge and information. The self drive buggies were fun and easy to use. Morning/afternoon tea and lunch were sumptuous and a welcome break.
We came from Taupo so the 1.5 hour drive was pleasant and easy enough to do. Although the accommodation is older the room was modernised, clean and tidy.

Thank you for your kind review and the 5 stars, we do appreciate you taking the time to send it. Ray & Lisa will be so pleased you had a wonderful time out with them. Ray as you know was the rural delivery man to Matiere and Ohura so has a lot of stories (some tall and some true), that he loves to share with our passengers. The food provided is lovely and Jan makes a mean spiced fruit loaf. Perhaps one day we'll see you again out on our rails.

A must-do trip through that part of the country, loved the fact that it was an easy trip to do and you don't need any experience to do it. The staff were very professional and organized, the meal stops were excellent, we stayed at the Forgotten Motel in Taumaraunui the night before, this is where the tour left from, excellent Motel as well.
Lots of history was learned about the part of the country by very knowledgeable guides. If you like train history would highly recommend it. We also stayed a night at the Whangamomana historic hotel rather than go back to Taumaranui, well worth the stay.

A wonderful way to see the amazing engineering feats of early railways and take in the hard to get to scenery. Carts are easy to drive. Our guide Luke was friendly and well informed. Homemade food was yummy and heaps of it! Did The very wiggly 21/2 hr drive to Whangamomona first which I recommend (Terry is a very good driver!!)
Take a jumper - definitely cold in the tunnels and we had beautiful weather. Thank you!

Its fantastic that you had a wonderful time out on our rails, Luke is a local lad and loves to share his passion of our line with all our guests. Jan does all our baking and we are often asked for the recipes for the slice and the loaf. Yes Terry is a good driver, he is very careful and mindful that not everyone has a cast iron tummy. We ordered the lovely weather for your tour so we're very pleased you enjoyed the weather. Perhaps we'll see you again out on our rails. Cheers

Sorry to be so late in answering...I would drive to get there from Auckland. It is a nice trip. I am guessing 4 hours to get there but check on Google maps.
