After being picked up in the Reykjavik Capital Area, we will head out of the city away from any light pollution to the best location , chosen on the day, for visibility of the evening. We sometimes need to wait for the Northern lights to appear, and even change location over the evening. The guide is always in contact with our office and other locals for details on where the visibility is best each evening in case they need to change location. We always try to go where the crowds are not, but can not always guarantee that others looking for the Northern lights will not show up at the same spot.

          Avoid this unethical company
It is easy enough to run a good tour when conditions are ideal. When a company shows it's true colors, however, is how they respond when things don't go to plan. This company showed it's true colors. Our tour experience was the single worst travel experience I have ever had. We saw zero aurora. Not even a cloudy glimmer. Nothing. Weather has a mind of its own, but this company had sent us an email just that afternoon bragging that they could still find aurora despite the clouds. This was obviously disappointing, but this company then made it so much worse. We were forced initially to wait outside in the dark and cold just staring at nothing for about an hour. Our guide did not provide any information about aurora or really talk to us at all, aside from talking personally with one young woman the whole time. We eventually asked if we could wait on the bus rather than stand around in the freezing dark in silence. The van door did not open or close unless the guide turned the van on, so we had to either be freezing with the wind coming in, or be trapped inside a cold dark bus. This lasted for hours. Our guide then abandoned us. He never once checked on us or gave us any updates. It was past midnight and we had no idea what was going on. To make matters worse, the company's van was malfunctioning. It was loudly beeping and making strange sounds the whole time. So we were stranded with a van that clearly had something wrong with it worried if we would be stranded overnight with no communication. And we couldn't even rest because of the infernal beeping and freezing cold. Truly, I have never been so eager to get home. We are avid travelers and have booked over 50 tours on Viator alone in many different countries. I have never once requested a refund. I did in this case. I thought this was the least the company could do and frankly should have been given automatically. To my shock, they refused. I asked one more time and they ignored me. Apparently they will not give refunds if you *go* on the tour, so that explains why they pressured us to go with their enthusiastic email saying that the tour was "ON" and that we would be going North to avoid the clouds in Reykjavik (screenshot attached). I don't know where they got the audacity to call themselves the #1 northern lights tour but that title is very undeserved. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Don't pay $300 to be miserable and get taken advantage of. Don't be fooled - choose anyone else or, better yet, chase the lights on your own.

          Amazing South Coast Tour
Amazing experience for myself, neice(20) and daughter (13). Took the tour with Tobi. Shared a lot of history, cultural information. Had a packed day of travel, visits to amazing sites. We had special dietary needs, and our guide took the time to find a great place for us to have dinner, and made the most of short daylight and a rainy day. Would definitely recommend this experience for older teens, adults. Long time in the car. Highlights - Ice Cave, Glacier Lagoon beautiful landscapes of Iceland

Arni is excellent, tour was awesome
I am writing to express my gratitude for the outstanding service provided by Arni during our recent South Coast tour. From the moment we communicated on pickup, Arni showcased incredible knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism. His attention to detail and ability to engage the group made the experience truly memorable. Arni went above and beyond to ensure everyone felt welcome and included, providing insights that enriched our understanding of the region. We experienced an issue with the van and Arni worked with your team to ensure we were safe and had a remarkable experience. Please extend my gratitude to Arni for his outstanding efforts. I look forward to sharing this experience with others and recommend him and your services in the future.

          Best Private Tour!!! Wonderful Guide!!
Wow! We had an incredible guide, Kristenn. He knew all the great pit stops in between the main attractions of the Golden Circle. We saw amazing sites and had our private car available when we needed it. We saw Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Blue Lagoon. We had a child and grandparents with us; went at our own pace and spent 11 hours together. We all had an unforgettable experience!! Would highly recommend and would refer to all our friends.

          Super Day
We had an excellent day with our guide, Pablo. It was just our family of four so this was a great way to get out of the main town and into the countryside. Pablo was friendly and very well versed in describing everything we saw. Make sure to have comfortable shoes and realize you will get wet when you visit the waterfalls.

A full day of great experiences. Wonderful way to explore from Reykjavik
Had a great tour that filled our day with volcano, geyser, waterfalls, horse and tomato farm. Lunch at the farm was great. Had an issue at the sky lagoon as to inclusions in our package. This matter was resolved in a professional way by the tour operator—Bus Travel Iceland.

If you're looking for a spectacular tour off the well-beaten path, this was a fabulous trip and an unforgettable hike! Our guides were prompt, prepared, and experienced but also—and importantly, to us—friendly and fun to talk with; you can't go wrong with this outfit!

          Just GO!!!
The first time was 2011, for 8 days rented a car and went up the side of the Eyjafjallajokull volcanos remains. We drove all over the place it is one of my favorite places on earth. Everyone we met was warm, friendly, and inviting. When our rental couldn't make it past the missing road, the guy who's driveway we ended up in offered up his jeep, so we could continue our journey. UNHEARD OF!! The people are lovely, its clean, they all speak english. We stayed in a guest house (its someone apt) and from its balcony saw the Northern lights The countryside is amazingly beautiful. You dont necessarily NEED a car, but we like the freedom to explore. . We returned 4/2023, (not 4/24 dropdown only went back to Aug) for only 5 days, on our way to the UK. This time we did not rent a car, we did an organized tour in a superjeep, to tour the inside of a ice glacier. The amount of tourist this go round was mind blowing. In 2011 there were 6 of us on the plane. This time 90+% of the plane was tourists. I say this bc the Keflavik airport is NOT big enough to handle this many ppl. They are planning a major reno, not sure when it will be finished. We stayed in a hotel, across from the bay on the main drag in Reykjavik. It had a GREAT bakery and restaurant on the 1st floor. We stayed on the 2nd floor facing the water. It was beautiful. HOWEVER if you actually want to sleep, get a room in the back. The locals were piss drunk and screaming bloody murder right under our window. I would say the vibe has changed a bit from 2011. Now there are MANY more things geared specifically for tourists. (Make friends w a local and find out there they eat and hang out! ) If you are on the fence @ going GO!! You will not regret it.

          Great Tour for Family
We had a fantastic tour with our guide, Joanna. Communication was great with the company in regard to booking and pick up. Joanna was engaging and accommodating. She found "fat" sheep and fields of Lupines so we could get some photos. She adjusted the tour to allow us to stay a little longer at sites we were more interested in. We were on a tight time schedule because we were leaving for a cruise but she got us to the terminal on time. She was very knowledgeable about the sites and Iceland and we really enjoyed the tour with her.

Great trip with a family of 6
Our day with Palli was awesome - he took great care of us and was full of useful information throughout. We were able to see all of the highlights and he even made a surprise stop for us to see some Icelandic horses up close (which the kids loved). The tour was flexible and not rushed, which made the experience more enjoyable for everyone. Thanks for the fun day! Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the golden circle in a comfortable way.

          Great experience
Great tour - the guide (Siggi - not sure if that's the right spelling) ensured that we stopped on all the relevant highlights (and a couple of extra ones) and that we had time to see things around. He was also telling us stories about Iceland and each location. The walk through the Katla Ice Cave is simply amazing - and the guide ensure that we were safe and supported to go through it.

Was originally booked for a Northern Lights tour with another tour operator…as part of an Icelandair package, the NL tour was scheduled the night before an early morning Golden Circle tour! After reading many unhappy reviews on TA, we decided to book with Wake Up Reykjavik for a small group tour, which was operated by Reykjavik Outventure. Best. Decision. Ever. First, as my husband and I watched dozens of people at the bus stop boarding the huge coach buses, we knew they’d be limited in the areas they could go. Our bus arrived (probably under 30 people total) and we were greeted by Magnus, our affable and informative guide. He made the hour ride to our viewing site very enjoyable (My husband now knows how to get into Valhalla😄) We went to a dark remote spot that coach buses would likely not be able to navigate. Of course even the best tour companies can’t guarantee the lights will put in an appearance…but the Valkyries must have put in a good word…the display was spectacular! Magnus kept us entertained and informed with lots of pertinent Aurora facts (and some fancy!) But here is what I think sets Reykjavik Outventure apart from the others…in addition to providing hot cocoa and blankets to help warm you up, they had a professional photographer whose camera equipment was better suited to capturing the lights than a smartphone! He shot incredible photos the entire time (including pictures of all the guests) and less than 24 hrs later everyone had access to all the photos! If I could give Reykjavik Outventure (and Wake up Reykjavik) 10 stars, I would! (Oh, and our original NL tour that was scheduled for the next day?… it was cancelled!)

This tour was pretty close to perfect. My Northern Lights tour was cancelled around 3:00 PM due to weather. I thought it was a little premature as I did see others were still taking place. I ran into a woman at my hotel whose tour was still happening. It is I took a chance and booked it. Well, I’m sure glad I did! We saw some beautiful lights around 11 o’clock, truly spectacular. Stymir, our guide/driver, was such a nice guy with a great sense of humor. We literally headed out in a snowstorm, all feeling somewhat unsure, and then, as if magic, the sky cleared, and mother nature put on a show. Ironically, it was a snowstorm on the drive back home. We were in a small vehicle, which was good and not so good – less people to manage on/off; however, the seating was definitely on the tight side. We all managed with a little squeezing and some laughs. Where we stopped there was several other buses/vans also enjoying the show. There was a professional photographer, as promised, link to the photos were sent today via email today. I recommend you do a little Google research on how best to photograph the lights, definitely helpful.

I went on my first NL tour on March 9. We saw the lights but they were very dim so they said we could reschedule the trip another night at no cost. I initially wasn’t planning to do so but there was great weather and it seemed promising to see the lights. They were able to squeeze me in right before the tour started - I’m so grateful that they did because the lights were INCREDIBLE!! Marta was a great guide for both of my trips. She drove us to one spot and we saw them very faintly and then clouds rolled in. We drove to another spot and as she was driving she saw them and found a spot to pull over. The lights put on a spectacular show! Marta took great photos that were shared with us by the company. I highly recommend taking their NL tour. We got hot chocolate and cinnamon buns at the end too :)

I recently took part in a Northern Lights tour with this company, and despite the fantastic tour guides who brought humor, warmth, and positive energy, the main spectacle, unfortunately, did not unfold.

Despite our ability to rebook (as many times as needed until you see the lights), we only managed to capture a very faint image of the lights in a photo (unfortunately, nothing in person), involving extensive hours of driving and relying on sheer luck, making it unpredictable whether you'll witness the lights.

During the initial trip, concerns about clouded skies weren't taken into account, resulting in a significant time investment (9 pm to 1 am) with no lights visible. Palle, our first guide, shared that a previous tour experienced ideal weather conditions but no light activity, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the phenomenon. They mentioned that their systems to track the lights and weather through satellites are nearly never accurate, and it ultimately comes down to luck.

Our second guide, Daniel, was exceptional, acknowledging the necessity of a bit of magic for the lights to manifest. The tour, limited to less than 16 people, provided delightful hot chocolate and cinnamon buns. While I commend the guides, I would advise caution for these tours, as witnessing the natural phenomenon is not guaranteed. Considering the cost, I'd suggest exploring more affordable options, though I still recommend this operator for its excellent guides.

Daniel's dedication, including playing Viking warrior music, and his spontaneous decision to stop on the way home, offering a brief glimpse of the lights, added a positive touch to the overall experience.

We booked this last minute because we finally had a clear night and a good aurora forecast but were in Reykjavik the night before departure with no car. It was an okay trip, and might have gotten 5 stars at half the price, but it was overpriced for what we got.

The good: We did see the aurora, not stupendous, but good, and enough to definitely check off the bucket list. Photos turned out well, and the hot chocolate was excellent. The driver was nice. It was cold and extremely windy, but that's not their fault.

The not so good: we were last to get picked up, so ended up in the very back of the van, where it's 4 seats across rather than 2/1 like all the other rows. That made the seats very crowded, and uncomfortable until I switched to the one opening onto the aisle (there was little legroom otherwise). Definitely not "luxury". We stopped at a gas station for a bio break beforehand, but there were 2 other vans there and we spent almost an hour until everyone got through the line. In retrospect, the aurora would not have been there yet had we left earlier, but you'd think they'd coordinate or use multiple gas stations. Then we detoured to pick up someone in an outlying hotel, who was a no-show because we were so late. The van door was sticky, meaning we needed help from the driver getting in and out, which we needed to do a lot to warm up. And the van lights and the driver's flashlights were white - every astronomer knows you use red lights (or red filters over the lights) to avoid messing up your night vision. None of those were fatal problems, but for $150 per person we should not have had those issues. As I said, at half the price it would have been fine.

Don't bother booking a tour, just hop on this bus for free.

I booked a Northern Lights Tour on March 7th, and despite the fact it rained all day and you couldn't see a star in the sky, they still decided to run the tour.
I spent several hours in the cold waiting for nothing while having some lukewarm hot chocolate and mediocre cinnamon roll (If this is the best in Iceland, this country has the worst bakers I've ever tasted)
After seeing nothing, the guide informed us that we would be able to book another tour free of charge, which is expected.

So I rescheduled my tour for Friday March 9th. I contacted the tour company twice to confirm that I was rebooked.
Pickup is scheduled from 8:30-9:00PM, and after it reached 9:15PM and I wasn't picked up I called the tour company.
The woman I spoke to said she would call the driver and call me back. I never received a call back.
I called back after 9:30PM, and they still had not made contact with the driver.
I was put on hold for 5 minutes, after which they just hung up on me.
I called back for the 3rd time at 9:50PM, and asked why I haven't been contacted about the arrival time.
This time I spoke to a different woman who told me, "Oh, she didn't tell you? Somebody snuck on the bus so the driver though they had everyone and they left the city an hour ago"

So clearly they don't check tickets or anything, so just hang around a major bus stop at night and you can get a free Northern Lights tour! Whenever they call a name and it gets no response, just pretend that it is you!
I understand the women on the phone have no control over the situation, but both women I spoke to seemed to not care at all about the situation. It was some of the most apathic customer service I have ever experienced.

I'm sure the company would to offer me a fake apology and say that this is not how they operate and how sorry they are, and rebook my tour, but I have to leave Iceland tomorrow and will not have another chance to see the Northern Lights, which is the reason I came to Iceland in the first place.

If want to see the Northern Lights, there are numerous other tour companies that will treat you better and actually take you on the tour.

Nororljos mean different things to different people. Some people have a feeling that they HAVE to see them. Others want to see them so badly that if its not a perfect experience, its ruined. The Icelandic people have a saying about the land of fire and ice- "It may not be perfect, but it is always beautiful". When going on this tour, remember the saying.

The weather was not ideal the night my family and I went on our tour. Agust- our guide, tried to set expectations by explaining that on a scale of 1 to 9, our outlook was a dismal 2. That said, he promised to do his best and communicate with his team and put us in a position to succeed. A bit of a weather geek myself, I took a moment during a rest area break, to compare notes with Agust about locations with higher potential. He appreciated my effort, complimented my knowledge, and explained why we would not be doing my recommended route and would be doing my second option.

We arrived at our destination and hunkered down as the cloud cover wasn't forecast to clear for about 45mins. Agust continued to communicate with the group what was happening, and what his hopes/expectations were. He was right. The skies never cleared to the awe-inspiring levels of some people on our tour, but it did for me. The Northern Lights didn't dance enough for some, but their gentle flow across the sky was sublimely beautiful. Agust had explained to the group while we waited how to set the ISO/Speed/Light settings on everyone's phones(iPhones as well as Androids), so when the clouds parted, it was time for pictures. YES, it was cold. Windy too, but its Iceland in December, what do you expect? Agust told us the window would be open for "probably 15-20mins". It was about the only time he'd be wrong that night. Our window was close to an hour. There was delicious hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls, but that's the last thing I'm going to remember about this trip. I'll remember looking to the heavens and seeing the gentle flowing river of heavenly lights- with my loved ones by my side.

***Why didn't Agust take my first choice of locations? He agreed 100% that the window would have been open longer and that the skies would be clear. What he shared with me- and later with the group when appropriate, was that two tour buses had been blown off the roads due to black ice. Fortunately, everyone on those buses were safe and unharmed. This is something that cannot be discounted. Reykjavik Out Lux and Agust not only did a good job communicating and executing a great tour, they also kept tabs on weather and road conditions to assure the safety of their customers. What was going on "behind the scenes" was in the best effort to provide us with a great experience, but not at the sacrifice of our personal safety. Kudos to Agust for driving in terrible wintry conditions and his team for keeping an eye out.

We went out on the trip first of all on the Sunday and sadly we did not see the lights, but was encouraged to book again for free (as companies do offer this option). We went the following day on the Monday, which was very easy to rearrange, by sending them a message to request to rejoin for free. The tour guide Palli was really knowledgable and enthusiastic and encouraged everyone to get as many pictures as possible once the lights showed up. Would definitely recommend booking this company as the tour is on a small minibus so the group of people isn’t too big either.

Party of 6 - review contrasted by fantastic experience with another tour group two nights earlier.
        1. received a canned email saying skies were clear around Reykjavik and expect a great night of viewing. Every single forecast online said Reykjavik would be solid clouds by 9PM. We saw Northern lights at the edge of town where EVERY local with a car goes. Reasonable northern lights were gone by 9:15 and those were ruined by light pollution of dozens of headlights on the same road. Received the identical canned email about “clear skies” the preceding night when it was a lights no-show except viewed in a camera.
        2. Their pick up is too broad and at the time and discomfort expense of their customers. One couple were 10 minutes out on the fringe of town the opposite direction of everyone else. That’s 20 minute delay for everyone else waiting in the cold and 20 minute delay dropping off after a dud evening.
        3. Driver (holding back his name), drove like a bat out of hell on roundabouts coming back. Everyone in the back was ready to lose their dinner.
        4. No pro-active “finding the lights” based on cloud coverage apps. We spent 2 hours driving twice to where the lights “were”, but with full cloud coverage, as you would expect, lights were gone by the time we arrived 20 minutes later.
        5. Speakers in back (where our group was stuck) were dead, so we had no narrative. When we complained, we were made to feel like it was our fault for not hearing.
Note: This received a 2 instead of 1 only because the photos were OK, better than reality, but at least provided a moment.

This tour company is amazing! The Northern Lights failed to appear on the first night but the volcano erupted and we were able to get an excellent view of the first night lava flow instead. We took advantage of a second tour (free) to see the lights and were extremely fortunate to see gorgeous Northern Lights as well as continued lava flow. Our tour guide, Wojtek, went out of his way to take us to two spots for the best views of the lights. He also did an excellent job of taking guest photos with the lights in the background. Since my own equipment did not do justice to the Northern Lights, I wish Wojtek had taken more photos excluding people although the standalone photos he provided were beautiful.

Our first tour guide, "Barney", provided excellent commentary and information about Iceland throughout our trip. Even thought we didn't see the lights on our initial trip, his insight was much appreciated and he was an outstanding tour guide.

It was very cold both nights and the hot chocolate and cinnamon buns were much appreciated!

I strongly recommend that you use this company which provides great value for an outstanding tour!
