  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • Most travellers can participate
  • Chanko nabe, also known as “sumo stew”, is a Japanese stew (hot pot) that contains chicken stock as the soup base with various vegetables. Chanko originated from the Ryokoku area and sumo wrestlers are known to eat a lot of it because a large amount of chanko can be cooked at once and many people can eat at the same time, perfect for sumo wrestlers who are hungry from training.
  • If dinner option is selected at checkout, the chanko hot pot dinner without drinks will be the default meal (please let us know if you would prefer vegetarian, or if you have any other special dietary requirements on the “Special Requirements” field at checkout. Please note that traditional chanko nabe broth is typically made with pork or chicken, but the restaurant may substitute the broth for those who prefer vegetarian option. Please understand that once we have accepted your dinner request, changes cannot be made one week before the tour date.
  • There is no age requirement. Children must be accompanied by adult (18 or older). Adult pricing applies to all guests of any age, except infants and toddlers between age 1 and 3, which are free of charge, as long as they do not occupy a seat (infants must sit on parents’ laps).
  • Before the tour, please notify us if you or someone in your group will be in a wheelchair. Please note that there is a wheelchair storage area on the first floor of the stadium; however, your seats will be on the second floor. Guests must be able to climb up the stairs on their own (or with the help from a family member) as staff from Ryogoku Kokugikan will not be able to assist guests.
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed in the arena, but food is available for purchase from vendors within the arena.
  • For Standard Tour (Join-in group option), the seats will be on the second floor B chair seats (from rows 7 to 11) or C chair seats. The tour will have a maximum of 20 people sitting in the same location with the English-speaking tour guide.
  • Please note that there may be a wait prior to seating, as we must wait for all sumo matches to end before entering. There may also be congestion at the Sumo Museum, in which the tour guide may ask guests to visit on their own since it would be difficult to walk around with a large group in a congested area.
  • When do the sumo tournaments take place in Japan? The official basho (tournaments) take place six times a year at various locations with each tournament lasting 15 days (start date and end date both land on Sundays). The exact dates vary, but takes place on the same months each year: January Tournament (Tokyo), March Tournament (Osaka), May Tournament (Tokyo), July Tournament (Nagoya), September Tournament (Tokyo), and November Tournament (Fukuoka).
  • Sumo originated in Japan and is one of Japan’s most well-known sports. It is considered as a gendai budo (Japanese martial art) with a history spanning many centuries. The sport is known for its highly regimented rules and strict traditions for its wrestlers. Most sumo wrestlers are required to live in communal heya (sumo training stables) with all aspects of their daily lives, including their meals and how they dress, closely monitored.
  • How far in advance should I book? Preparing an event requires some time, especially if reservations for restaurants or other venues are required. We recommend making a reservation as early as possible. Ideally, it should be 3 months before your travel date, or 1 month before the travel date at the very least. We may not be able to arrange your event in time so your booking request may be cancelled and you will receive a full refund.
  • Why am I charged a service fee if I make a cancellation after you started planning the trip? Organizing and planning a trip or event requires a lot of time and if we have made reservations on your behalf, it may be very challenging to cancel some booking requests. Once we receive your booking and will start arranging your tour guide, buying tickets, making reservations at venues for your tour, etc.
  • Please also note that group tickets are released by the Sumo Association about 4 – 7 weeks before the tour date; if we are unable to obtain the tickets, we will notify guests within 4 weeks before the tour and will offer an alternative tour date or full refund.
  • Using audio headsets, you’ll clearly be able to hear the expert guide explain the history and culture of sumo wrestling, as well as learn about some of the most famous sumo wrestlers throughout history and today in Japan. Enjoy the intense matches with explanations from your expert guide and cheer on your favorite sumo wrestlers along with dedicated local fans.
  • The meeting point will be included in the tour details sent to your email at least one week before the tour date.
  • Japan Awaits is a licensed tour operator in Japan, with hundreds of registered and vetted tour guides nationwide. We offer tours in any location in Japan and manage all details, including transportation and tickets. Visit Japan Awaits to learn more about our tours or inquire about a custom experience today.
  • For Sumo Stable experience (during off-season of Sumo Tournament): Join the Sumo Stable Morning Practice Tour (during off-season of Sumo Tournament) at a sumo stable near Warabi Station (30 min. from Tokyo), in a small join-in group (8 - 16 people). Watch sumo wrestlers train at an authentic stable while an expert guide shares insights via audio headsets. Location is at the Sumo Stable near Warabi Station (30 min from Tokyo Station) from 8 AM - 12:30 PM. Please note this is NOT part of the Sumo Tournament experience. More information will be sent via email after booking.
  • This experience requires a minimum number of travellers. If it’s cancelled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund

  • All sales are final and incur 100% cancellation penalties.

    It was a great experience!
The extremely charming local guide Koji led us through the evening with enthusiasm, humor, and impressive knowledge. In two charming izakayas, we savored a variety of delicious dishes and immersed ourselves in authentic Japanese after-work life. The fugu, accompanied by exquisite side dishes, was particularly unforgettable – a true culinary experience. We were also thrilled by the three variations of fish roe, as well as the tender horse sashimi and other gastronomic highlights. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening that we highly recommend to everyone!

A memorable visit to the Snow Monkey Park and town of Obuse
Our visit to the Snow Monkey Park and the town of Obuse would not have been the same without our guide Hori. Before our trip, he shared the itinerary and updated us on changes in the weather and logistics. During the trip, Hori ensured we made it to the park before it was crowded. This is something that would not have been possible without his level of familiarity with the local transit system. During the tour, Hori shared information about the park, the wildlife, and the history of Obuse. The value that this added to our visit cannot be understated. For those considering a guide to the Monkey Park, having Hori as a guide is worth its weight in gold. Not only will he ensure your trip is memorable, but his time management skills ensure you can enjoy the visit without having to worry about catching the next train, bus, etc. Thank you Hori!

    Delicious!
This was a really cool tour with some great food! For those who want to try things like fugu and horse sashimi, this is definitely your tour. But it's also great for less adventurous palates too! Our guide, Koji, did a great job of accommodating the tastes of everyone on the tour and made sure that everyone walked away full and happy. The tour was worth every penny and is a great way to spend an evening in Tokyo!

    Amazing experience with Shun.
We showed up to the whisky tasting and were greeted with a unique environment to enjoy our drinks. Shun was highly knowledgeable and was engaging to our conversation. He guided us through the experience with class and with grace. The whisky itself was very tasty and was presented with rich history. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who has the time in Tokyo, local or tourist.

    Ebisu food tour
Our guide Duke took us to some great places to eat that would have been hard for someone who is not a local to find. His English was great as well and my kids found him entertaining as well. We had a variety of foods and he also gave some history regarding the area we were in as well of different types of Japanese cuisine.

An authentic evening with the Geisha
A wonderful experience! Communication was easy for booking with Kate at Japan Awaits. There were 8 of us and the evening was delightful. The translator helped with communication. The geisha and apprentice (forget the official name) were wonderful in interacting with us. An authentic experience which is what we were looking for. The dinner was good but it was the geisha experience which made the evening special for us. I definitely recommend and would do it again if returning to Tokyo.

    Averagely good and interesting tour
It was a good tour, the tour guide was really kind and friendly. Unfortunately the drawing class was too short in my opinion.

    Great experience for us!
We decided to take this tour after wanting to learn a bit more about Shintoism and we were in Japan for our Honeymoon. We have a great time, learnt loads about Shinto and the Japanese culture in general. We were taken to three completely different shrines and the travel between was easy. Hiro was very friendly and really made this experience memorable for us. It felt like he was tailoring it to us as we walked around, he was attentive and no question was too much. Definitely an experience I would suggest anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture and Shintoism to go on. At the end he gave us some suggestions too for how we could spend the rest of our day based off of what we were interested. Definitely a brilliant memory for us, thank you :)

If you are thinking about doing this activity, book it as soon as you know you are able to participate, as it WILL sell out and IS an unmatched experience. The tournaments happen only in odd-numbered months and move around Japan, but the Tokyo venue is the historical original site. It's like College Game Day on an SEC campus - crowds arriving, fans queuing up to catch glimpses of their favorite athletes, banners flying, swag on sale. We were blessed with a fantastic guide, Miyako, who talked us through every aspect of the day - the museum, training, ceremonies, and matches. Her enthusiasm for the sport, and introducing non-fans to it, was clearly communicated; count yourself fortunate if she is your guide. Filling hot-pot dinner afterwards made for a complete experience that was a highlight of our days in Tokyo.

We had an absolutely incredible experience on our tour with Toshi to see a sumo match in Tokyo! Toshi’s expertise and passion truly elevated the experience, as he skillfully guided us through the history, traditions, and intricacies of sumo wrestling. His detailed explanations of each bout, including the rankings and their impact on the tournament, gave us a much deeper appreciation of the sport. Toshi was attentive, engaging, and ensured everyone in the group felt included and informed. The evening concluded with a delicious traditional sumo meal, which was the perfect way to cap off the experience. If you’re considering this tour, I cannot recommend Toshi enough—he made it unforgettable!

This was an excellent experience. Initially we had planned to simply buy tickets for this tournament and go about it ourselves, but experiencing this alongside a knowledgable expert on Sumo was invaluable.

Our guide, Toshio Arai, began with a historical background on the sport (and some traditional Japanese beliefs in general) to get the day started, and once inside the magnificent Ryogoku Sumo Hall Toshio, did an amazing job of breaking down the matchups, rankings and overall structure of the tournament. Once the (impressively massive) sumo wrestlers began the tournament itself, we were provided with detailed insight such as the specific physical techniques used, some of the more popular wrestlers backgrounds and all the tradition and ceremony surrounding each bout.

If there was anything we wanted to know, we could simply ask and through an ear piece he was able to communicate the answer to the whole group.

Generally this is not the sort of "touristy" thing my partner and I would do, but the additional knowledge, background and passion shown by Toshio made this a far more enjoyable experience had we simply gone ourselves, not understanding the various nuance of this ancient sport.

We would highly recommend this experience to anybody thinking about it - a sport this impressive needs an experience to match.

An amazing experience. Our guide Toshi was fantastic. He meet us at the station, we had a short walk to the Sumo Stadium.
Toshi explained the history of Sumo, we had a quick visit to the Sumo museum and then a tour of the stadium.
We all had an ear piece so Toshi could explain everything that was going on. So mush history and culture.
I highly recommend seeing a Sumo Tournament and I highly recommend Toshi as a guide.

The Sumo tournament is an amazing thing to see and it’s great to have someone to explain the rules. We did expect for the price (entry tickets themselves are only 5000Y) that we would have more than one guide between a group of 14 of us. We all booked separately exactly for this purpose. So for some people hard to hear our guide and impossible to ask questions as too far away from him. Otherwise it was great and he did a good job considering the no of people.

We had a great guide for this tour. Fluent in English and even spoke good Swedish (we are swedes) and had great knowledge of the art of sumo wrestling. We definitely recommend for anyone interested in watching sumo wrestling. The name of our guide was Yasuhiro Suzuki (sorry if I misspelled the name). A big thank you/arrigato gozaimasu/ tack så mycket Hiro!

An absolute highlight of Japan, highly recommend! We had our 16 year old and 7 year old with us, and everyone in the family enjoyed. Our guide was Izumi, who was very knowledgeable. He started with the mascot’s, then showed us where the sumos entered (where people cheered for the popular sumos), through the museum (that explained the elements and rules of sumo wrestling and saw up close various items including the belts they wear which are huge). We then entered the stadium and watched the tournament (including the best of the tournament). The seats were great, no matter where you sit, you’ll get a good view (you can also get food and drinks, including alcohol when in the arena, but start to close towards the end of the tournament. This is not included in the cost of this tour but thought I’d mention). Izumi explained who was wrestling, rankings etc. I would never have understood and had a real appreciation without our guide. I don’t like sports but could watch this every day. My husband loves sports and could watch this everyday too. After the tournament we went to dinner and ate like the sumos. The meal had various dishes, but a huge meal and very tasty.

Good view, a little far away though.
It was good having the tour guide explain some rules and formalities during the bouts. We learned a lot.
The train rides from Shibuya took a bit longer than expected and we missed the meeting time by 10 minutes. We managed to collect our tickets still and met up with the group in our seats.
Would’ve been good to know to bring in snacks and drinks with us as saw other locals had.
I had never watched Sumo before but would again. A place to keep cool, be entertained and relax for an afternoon.

The tour guide gave good directions and maintained communication before meeting me and the group. He had radios for us to listen to information and commentary on the Sumo. He was a former Sumo journalist, so he had great information about the matches, and knew when we had enough time to tour the building in between good matches.
I also went to dinner afterward. The food and drink were tasty, and there were heaps of them.
It was great fun!

There are very detailed English introductions about Yokozuna and Sumo, as well as the rules and development history of Japanese Sumo, as well as the famous Sumo Association souvenirs. Currently, he is a very responsible tour guide, and at first I was worried that I would not be able to get it. I got the tickets thanks to the tour guide who waited patiently and shared that there are some promising sumo players who have come to see them in the past few years.
