Kintsugi is a simple restoration technique that uses gold or other metal powder to repair broken, chipped, or cracked pieces. Kintsugi has been handed down in Japan from ancient times, and the culture of taking good care of things has attracted attention worldwide. Kintsugi lacquer comes from the poison oak tree or black tree of the poison ivy family. When dried, lacquer is a natural adhesive that is harmless to the human body and has a hardening effect. Cracks are considered a landscape in kintsugi, and the joint is decorated with gold, silver, or other metal powder. Kintsugi is based on not pretending that the cracks have never existed but considering them part of the item's history and breathing new life into it. In 2024, Master Taku is awarded with the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon, the honorable commendation given to individuals who have made significant achievements in the fields of science, art, invention, improvement, and creation this year.

      Entertaining and Informative Sumo Experience!
This sumo experience was an absolute blast! It was the perfect mix of comedy, interaction, and fascinating insight into Japan’s traditional sport. From start to finish, we were thoroughly entertained while learning so much about sumo wrestling. The wrestlers were not only skilled but also incredibly funny, making the entire experience lively and engaging. Their playful demonstrations and interactive elements had us laughing while still showcasing the sport’s deep-rooted traditions and techniques. Getting to step into the ring ourselves (or at least try!) made it even more unforgettable. Whether you’re a sumo fan or just curious, this is a must-do in Japan. We walked away with great memories and a newfound appreciation for sumo culture. Highly recommend!

      A great show
I wasn’t sure based on some other reviews whether this show would be good or too gimmicky, but it was great. We learnt about the history and lifestyles of the sumos and the sport of sumo wrestling. The wrestlers were fit and flexible and put on a good show. The hotpot dinner was delicious. I would highly recommend this activity.

I booked a private Kintsugi workshop with Wabi-Sabi by Master Taku as a surprise for my family of 4. It was a privilege to be instructed and taught by such a passionate and talented Master. We spent almost two hours completely immersed in every moment, learning about the art form and creating our own pieces. The history and concept is just so incredibly wholesomely divine and very beautiful. It was one of the major highlights of our trip. I highly recommend the upgrade workshop and make it private if you are 4 or more people. This just leveled up our overall experience. We came out of the studio floating, as if we’d just had the best meditation session of our lives. I booked with him directly via his website and he is very responsive to emails. Communication was clear.

A great class! Taku-San was a very good teacher, showing us step by step how to do the kintsugi, and I would definitely recommend this experience! You get to choose which pottery you want to work with, and the materials are all pre-prepared at your workstation, including long thin gloves to cover your arms and a robe to protect your clothes. You can take your pottery home with you right after the class, but it has to stay in a plastic bag for a month to cure (it fully cures in one year). After the first month, you can use it for food, but you can’t microwave it. I’m so glad I did this on my trip to Tokyo!

This experience was more than just learning Kintsugi, but also understanding the philosophy behind Kintsugi which reminds us to use setbacks in life to become stronger with personal growth. A wonderful morning in a gorgeous part of Tokyo. We started with breakfast at the i2 cafe and visited the pineapple cake shop too to see Kumo Kenya’s architecture up close. Fabulous.

I went with my fiance, we did the authentic class with Master Taku. We learned so much about Kintsugi and gained a greater appreciation for the art. Master Taku and the other members of the staff were so kind and patient. We don’t speak Japanese but they have explanations in English and clear instructions. It was a very unique and memorable experience, would recommend!

A must do when visiting Japan. You leave with a beautiful peace of art. But the experience itself is the best part. Learn about lacquer, the concept of wabi sabi, and learn from a master teacher the method of kintsugi for beautiful results. Not just technical skills, but flow of crack width for beautiful imperfection. Could not recommend it enough.

Amazing! Can’t wait to do it again next time I come back! The instructor is so professional! He is super handsome, very patient, funny and easy going. Quite often, I found a lot of traditional artists in Japan are more uptight and serious, but Taku is more artistic than traditional. He just appreciates everyone’s own creativity. He can see everyone’s strengths and found beauty in your piece, which is rather accurate. Highly recommended.

The workshop was amazing! The instructor was a master in the art of Kintsugi! Such a unique experience that anyone either visiting Japan or a resident of the country should partake in. Love the beautiful metaphor of the art as well!

This experience was thorough, instructive, and very fun. There is limited English offered by the pottery assistants, but it was more than enough for the class. There is a brief history of kintsugi as an art form and a concept, and the class takes place in the artist’s basement studio. The class offers all the materials needed as well as a take-home box and packing peanuts. One suggestion for improvement would be listing the steps for instruction on the screen for us to follow.

This was an enjoyable class. I’ve always wanted to do this and glad I took this with Taku Nakano. Taku was very patient, helpful, and encouraging as we handled our broken vessels and made them into beautiful pieces to bring home. Would recommend this class.
