Sumo, the national sport of Japan, has a history of more than 1,500 years. Lucky tourists can catch wrestlers in action at practice centers throughout Japan, but on this rare, once-in-a-lifetime tour, you’ll don a costume and go toe-to-toe with retired champions during your own private match, followed by an authentic, calorie-filled lunch of chanko nabe, aka Japanese hot pot.

What to Expect

Sumo wrestling has been a mainstay of Japanese sports for more than a millennium. While public matches make for great viewing, you’ll go a step further during this one-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes adventure, which matches you with a real-life sumo wrestler for your own head-to-head combat session.

Perfect for adventure-seekers, or any tourists in search of the perfect travel story, the tour begins with a presentation on the history of sumo and an in-depth explanation of a few key wrestling techniques. You’ll observe three bona fide sumo matches before donning your own costume and entering the ring. Get a chance to pose for souvenir photos and train like an authentic sumo wrestler using the steps you’ve learned. Next, you’ll get paired with a wrestling veteran, who you’ll go toe-to-toe with in a public battle.

After working up an appetite, relax with authentic, savory sumo fare, including chanko nabe, a type of rich, calorie-heavy Japanese hot pot, which will be cooked and prepared by former wrestlers.
