How to spend New Year’s Eve in London
The British capital sparkles on New Year’s Eve with many classic celebrations and a few surprises.

We’re just going to come right out with it: London may just be the very best place to ring in the New Year. From boozy boat parties to spectacular firework displays to fine food affairs, nowhere does it quite like the Big Smoke. With NYE celebrations being rather dampened the last couple of years, we’re feeling more than ready to party like it’s 2019.
Cruise into the New Year with Gala Dinner on the Thames
There are few ways to ring in the New Year better than a memorable night on the water. Take a boat ride down the Thames River running right through the heart of London with a three-course gourmet dinner and wine. If that wasn’t enough, live music sets the tone for the whole experience. Imagine seeing London's major sights—like Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London—from the water in all of their twinkling glory. After toasting in the new year, retreat to citizenM Tower of London to relax and recuperate.
Get the best view of the New Year’s Eve fireworks along the Embankment

Cancellations scrapped the last two years of full-on celebrations, but this year, fireworks along the Victoria Embankment have resumed. Be warned: you’ll need tickets for this super-popular event—and they are limited. Check the Mayor of London’s website for information and ticket releases. A stay at the Resident Covent Garden—just a few blocks from the river—is the crème de la crème of London chic and affordability.
Cozy up to the animals at the Natural History Museum
Ringing in the New Year with your favorite humans is one thing, but why not mix things up a little by getting cozy with the unique animals found at Kensington’s Natural History Museum? Selected galleries will be open on the celebrated night, with ancient reptiles stealing the show. Your NYE will go down in “natural history” as one of the most exciting as you party it up Jurassic style on the dance floor. Musical bingo is also back by popular demand, as well as dino-themed activities all night long. There will be refreshments and drinks served all evening. Nearby, a night at the Ampersand Hotel will guarantee you don’t have to wander far after the festivities.
(Chef’s) kiss the year goodbye at Sushisamba Heron Tower

This iconic restaurant has maintained its draw over the years—particularly for New Year’s Eve—for good reason. The combination of top-class cuisine served alongside killer views is taken up several notches for the end-of-the-year celebration. Past years have seen high-energy DJs, live performances, and colorful light installations along with a dance party lasting until the wee hours at this sky-high restaurant. Participants can expect to dine on Sushisamba’s signature South American and Japanese plates featuring ceviche, robata-grilled meat, fish, veggies, and of course, sushi. After toasting the new year, lay your head at the nearby Apex London Wall Hotel.
Enjoy inventive cocktails at the London Sky Bar in South Bank
Located on the 29th floor of the Millbank Tower, London Sky Bar delivers sweeping views over the capital, overlooking such landmarks as the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and the London Eye. Enjoy plush banquette seating while sipping on cocktails and listening to DJs. The London Sky Bar features a cocktail “pharmacy” with concoctions designed to relax the senses listed in a clever menu with sections like “stress relievers,” “aphrodisiacs,” and “pain killers.” Whatever your mood, the mixologists are sure to deliver bespoke creations to suit your fancy. Close by, The Westminster London is the perfect place to wake up on the first day of the year.
Skate New Year’s Eve away at Somerset House

Somerset House is a special place to visit any time of year, but the New Year’s Eve celebrations are especially magical. This year, it has partnered with Moët & Chandon to ring in 2023 with great aplomb. Amazing views of the fireworks can be had from Somerset’s terrace, but the ice rink may be even more of a draw. DJ sets will get skaters moving, while female-led Foundation FM will take over the east wing with groovy houseparty vibes, spinning epic tunes from London’s underground. With a stay at the ME London, located across the street, you’ll want to savor every minute after ringing in the new year.
