A comprehensive guide to the stunning Italian shoreline.
Southern Italy’s Amalfi Coast is a spectacular region with stunning cliffs, crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, and charming towns that attracts visitors from across the globe. For a run-down on the coastal towns that stand out—and the best time to visit each—read our guide to the must-see destinations along the Amalfi Coast, listed from east to west.
Best time to visit: April to June to beat the heat and crowds
This inviting town is one of the most iconic spots on this stretch of coastline, thanks to the colorful houses clinging to the cliffs. However, if you want to avoid the crowds that flock to Positano in the summer, the best time to visit is from April to June. During this time, the weather is mild, the spring flowers are in full bloom, and the Mediterranean Sea is just warm enough for the first dips of the season. One of the region's most beautiful beaches—Fornillo—is here and perfect for lounging. In addition to enjoying the towns and beaches, this is also the ideal time to take a private hiking tour along Path of the Gods, a 4.5-mile coastal trail. Retire each night at the top-rated Residence Villa Yiara, with ocean-view rooms and several sun terraces perched above the town.

Best time to visit: August and September for the Night of Lights and Feast of San Gennaro
Tucked between the bustling towns of Positano and Amalfi, Praiano is usually a quiet retreat with a serene beach and a beautiful seafront. But, between late July and early August, the "Night of Lights" or "Luminaria" festival takes over the Piazza San Gennaro, transforming the surrounding alleys and streets with the flickering of thousands of candles and torches to honor San Domenico, the patron saint venerated at the Church of Santa Maria a Castro that overlooks the town. Then, in September, the town hosts a vibrant Feast of San Gennaro celebration. This religious festival features colorful processions, lively music, and breathtaking fireworks. Book a stay at Hotel Margherita, which one of our community members called “a true delight on the Amalfi coast,” to enjoy either festival to its fullest.
Best time to visit: August for the Ravello music festival
Ravello is renowned for its lush gardens, including the breathtaking and historic Villa Cimbrone gardens and the enchanting Villa Rufolo, offering sweeping coastline views. While April to October is typically the best time to visit Ravello, August is optimal for a few reasons. For one, the weather is warm (with highs in the low 80s) and inviting, perfect for taking in the gardens and strolling the town's winding streets. Plus, visitors can enjoy the music-forward Ravello Festival, which runs from June to September and is at its peak in August. The festival is a cultural extravaganza of classical concerts, plays, and dance performances, hosted at some of the town’s most iconic villas and historic churches. As far as where to stay, the cliffside Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast offers a luxurious stay, while A Casa dei Nonni in the town’s center is a top choice for those on a budget.

Best time to visit: May to September for beach time
Whether you're a history buff or a beach lover, Maiori offers something for everyone, and there's no better time to experience it than from May to September. The hidden gem on the Amalfi Coast boasts one of the longest and widest beaches in the area, making it a prime destination for beach lovers. During this period, the weather is typically warm and sunny, making it the perfect time to enjoy the beach, various water activities, and the town's beautiful gardens at Palazzo Mezzacapo. And be sure to stop by Torre dei Normanni, which is not only a historic watch tower on the edge of the sea but also has a terrace restaurant. At the end of a day of beach lazing, retreat to Hotel Botanico San Lazzaro, which has a pool that overlooks the Med.
Best time to visit: August and September for shellfish
As the warm summer air still lingers, there's no better time to visit the picturesque fishing village of Cetara. With its postcard-perfect harbor, narrow streets, and pristine beach, this lesser-known tourist destination epitomizes Mediterranean beauty. And for seafood lovers, the best time to visit is from June to September, when the anchovies and tuna are at their freshest. Be sure to book a table at Dea Mangiona and La Cianciola for the best the area offers of the delicacy. Speaking of anchovies, August is generally when the anchovy and tuna festival known as Sagra A tutto tonno kicks off. The festival features food tastings, cultural events, and live music, making it an excellent opportunity to experience the local culture and cuisine. Stay at Hotel Cetus, a property perched on the coastline that offers complimentary breakfast.
Best time to visit: June for warm weather, ceramic displays, and fireworks
This lesser known town, celebrated for its vibrant and colorful ceramics, is often the first stop on the Amalfi Coast for those arriving from Salerno. While the peak season for visiting is July to September, our vote is for a June jaunt to escape some of the crowds and still enjoy warm and sunny weather. During your time here, explore the town's bustling ceramic shops like Ceramiche Sara, admiring the impressive hand-painted creations. Or, learn the craft yourself by taking a private ceramics lesson. Moreover, June 24 marks the Festa di San Giovanni Battista, a lively religious celebration that features festive processions, sumptuous cuisine, and fireworks. Visitors love the Hotel Voce del Mare, close to all the main attractions, including the ceiling murals at Arciconfraternita della Santissima Annunziata e del Santissimo Rosario.
