... Flushing is $169, safe interesting area, subway access, easy car ride to JFK. Best Western Queens Court in Flushing, similar location, is $185. I'd pound Priceline before I booked something in Flushing though; it's a safe location and accessible to transit, but it IS kind of out there ... more

R: YMCA. The West Side Y is in a great location and hosts "elder hostel" trips all the time. Very popular, safe, convenient. I haven't' been there in a while, but some of it was in need of a makeover, new paint, etc., so don't expect glamour. ... more
