... done ?......Just wondering if the water quality is improving at all during the past seven years.........we were so tempted to book a vacation rental there and snorkel in that area, but avoided it for obvious reasons........would definitely consider it in the future, though, if the water quality improves ... more

You might look at Puako and Waialea if you want right on the water and don't like resorts.
I consider myself a non-resort person, but I think people who look here with the "I hate resorts" mindset are actually shooting themselves ... more

Vacation rentals do not come with guard dogs! B&B's might. That makes vaca rentals vulnerable.

... what you want to do. Vacation rental ads are the worst for making it seem like water is pristine that isn't, or swimmable when it's not.
Hawi is a great alternative experience to see a different side of Hawai'i, but not a very good place for water ... more

There are many, many Vacation Rental options right next to the tide pools. Nanawale wont be on the water or walking distance to the water, but it will be closer to Pahoa where you can go out to eat and enjoy the town. Again, not walking distance, but close ... more

Is anyone familiar with this vacation rental or the area? It is on Pohoiki Road outside of Pahoa. We're looking for a place with views and privacy, but not too remote for 3 nights at the beginning of Feb. 2010. This seems like it would be a good option ... more
