Paying in full with damage deposit in advance??

... a deposit for our week gite and the return letter states that not only the balance but 150 pounds is due 8 weeks in advance and will be returned minus charge for cleaning provided no extra attention or replacement needed. Is this usual in France? It seems odd to me ... more

When we've booked gites, we've always paid in full in advance, then handed over a *cash* damage deposit when we arrived (if it was required). However, we've never had a separate cleaning charge - it's either been included, or it would be retained from the cash ... more

Depends entirely on how badly you want to see Burgundy and Paris. There are hundreds of Gites in the area available at any given time, so don't think you have to take one just because it has a minimum stay ... more
