When in Rome... rent Roman Villas

Rome is one of the world's most beautiful ancient cities, a romantic holiday destination with a unique heritage. There is a huge amount to see, from some of the world's most important Christian sites like the Basilica of St John Lateran and Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City (the Pope's official residence), to the wonders of the ancient world like the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum.

It is far too vibrant a city to shut yourself away in a hotel every night, and self-catered accommodation is a great way to get closer to the everyday life of the modern Romans. As well as all the heritage sites, there are also the restaurants, shops and night life that you would expect from a modern European capital city.

Further out, beyond Rome itself, is the lovely region of Lazio, which contains everything from sandy beaches to the Preapennine Mountains, all within easy striking distance of the capital.

Low cost Roman living

A modern European capital city comes with a hefty pricetag for family holidays, and Rome is no exception when it comes to hotels. If you are looking to get the most out of a holiday in Rome, then the best money saving option is certainly self catering accommodation.

As well as carrying echoes of the Roman lifestyle, villa holidays are great for children as they tend to be a little further out of town and the kids can let off steam without worrying about disturbing the neighbours. They are family friendly properties, with a swimming pool almost coming as standard in the Lazio region. For around £1,000 a week you can get a villa just an hour's drive away from Rome for a family of four - six, and there are plenty of deals to be had during the low season to make this even more attractive!

Apartments in the Vatican!

If you would like to experience the hustle and bustle of city life in Rome, you can rent apartments from around £55 per night, even near the Vatican or the Trevi Fountain, where a hotel room will set you back a great deal more. With an apartment, you also have the freedom to eat out in restaurants or to have a more frugal meal at home, before going out to enjoy Rome's nightlife.

Whether you are going to Rome to see the seat of the Roman Empire or the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, or just to explore beautiful countryside with your family, the wide array of villas and apartment rentals will help you save money and enjoy a more authentic Italian holiday.

Smoking is prohibited on the trains, so people light up as soon as they hit the platform. We did buy some of our tickets before leaving but could have just bought them here. There's a little learning to using the fast-ticket machines, but they are great. Usually lines ... more

Smoking is prohibited on trains, hotel rooms & inside restaurants (since 2005 I think) IMO, the 1st class price doesn't justify the price difference (unless you are on a really long haul trip), 2nd class is perfectly comfortable for the 70 minute fast train from Rome to Naples (45 Euro ... more

Smoking is banned in public spaces, including restaurants and bars, in taxis and on public transport. In restaurants that have smoking facilities, the rooms, in my experience, are totally separate.
