We went to Kyoto to ... well, does any one need a reason to go to Kyoto? but we timed our trip to coincide with the main floats during Gion festival. The machiya manager e-mailed me days in advance for our arrival time. We advised her we would arrive at 9:30 and expect to store our luggage at the station...

High season includes cherry blossum season in end March- early April, Golden Week in late April-early May, autumn in November and early December, and some other special days.
Special Season includes Gion Festival in July, Obon in mid-August, Christmas and around New Years Day.
