The Dallas Zoo is undergoing an historic transformation.  As the largest and longest established zoo in the Southwest, founded in 1888, the Dallas Zoo is taking big steps towards becoming one of the best Zoos in the country.  In May 2010, the Giants of the Savanna opened to very positive reviews from guests as well as the Zoo industry. The 11-acre habitat for elephants, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, ostriches, zebras, impala, warthogs, and more features giraffe feeding and panoramic views of the animals from the Simmons Safari Base Camp. Lions are often found napping against the large glass windows at the Serengeti Grill. Since 2005, the Zoo has opened more than 15 new or renovated exhibits, including Bug U!, Tamarin Treetops, Travis & Zach's Birds Landing, Otter Outpost, the Jake L. Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Center, Galápagos and Aldabra tortoises habitats, the Don Glendenning Penguin Cove, and much more!  The Children's Zoo is a favorite with all kids, especially the running stream where they can play. There are many beautiful paths shaded by huge trees for humans to walk while experiencing animals and nature.  The Dallas Zoo is a must-see destination for anyone that enjoys nature!
