The Lansing metropolitan area, as well as nearby cities including the suburbs of East Lansing and Okemos are served by the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA), which provides mass transit service. CATA also provides transportation throughout the Michigan State University campus with special “Spartan Service” that operates during the Fall and Spring semesters, and to the nearby Lansing Community College, and Thomas M. Cooley Law School campuses.
CATA actually boasts the second highest rider ship in the state. The regular cash fare for riders is $1.00, while students with valid CATA or college student ID car is $.50. ID is not required for grades five and under. Seniors who are 62 and older with valid CATAClub, ADA or Medicare card, as well as persons with disabilities (with valid card) are also $.50. Children under 42-inches in height may ride for free.
Drivers cannot make change, but the farebox does issue a CATACash Card for the difference between what you owe and what you deposit in the farebox, and card can be used for future fares (farebox only accepts $1, $5 and $10 bills, and cards are only good on CATA fixed-route buses).
CATA has also installed bike racks on the fixed-route buses, and bike lockers are also available for rent for the storage of bicycles.
