Kin Thong Lao Slik, on Sakkarine Rd next to Caruso Lao, is an excellent source for Lao silks. The owner, Kin Thong, is very knowledgeable and works with weaving centers to create traditional scarves, wraps, and wall hangings. Prices range according to the time required for weaving -- generally the more-complex designs require more work, ranging up to 10 weeks for the most intricate pieces. Beautiful scarves in one or two colors cost about USD 20, while the most interesting hangings well set the buyer back about USD 250 to 300. That's a premium compared to the night market, of course, but a small price to pay to make sure that the fabric is truly Lao and hand-made rather than mass-produced in Vietnam or Thailand.
