To get a feel of Luxor before you travel there or just to see it through the eyes of those who have been there already check out some of the following works that have been written about the city:
When Gustave Flaubert traveled through Egypt in the mid 19th century, he wrote a large set of letters, diary entries and travel notes full of his writer’s keen observation and poetic language. Published in 1927 in both French and English, the work not only give a unique view of the city, it also gives the reader a chance to look at a critical point in the author’s life.
If you are bringing children along, or just enjoy a lighter read, try Kathleen Karr’s Exiled; Memoirs of A Camel. Telling the story of Ali, a camel born in Luxor, he is captured and sent to the US to be a part of the army as a member of the Camel Corps. Combining history, geography and culture with an engaging story, Karr’s book is a great way to introduce your children to Egyptian culture and history.
Luxor, having been considered an exotic locale in Western eyes, is also featured in many action and adventure books, including the Jonny Quest series by Brad Quentin and science fiction and fantasy novels about Tutankhamen’s “curse”.
