Among other things, Muscat is known and appreciated for its friendliness to visitors though, admittedly, more family-oriented activities could be offered. In order to respect the mostly Islamic culture, females are encouraged to dress modestly. For the most part, this means covering the shoulders, knees, and legs.

Hotel rates range from as little as $44 (the Crown Plaza Hotel) to $208 (the Hilton) and more, a night. Family friendliness varies, with some hotels offering cribs and/or highchairs, and others offering babsiting services. Many hotels will look like palaces to little eyes, so simply staying in one will feel special. Try your best to encourage your children to use the bathroom facilities at your hotel, as you will find them much cleaner than public toilets.

Young boys and girls with midieval dreams will certainly enjoy visiting the twin forts of Al-Mirani and Al-Jalali. Originally built in the 1500s as a defence against Portuguese invadors, they flank the Al Alam Palace. Al-Mirani and Al-Jalali are now museums and house military paraphernalia such as cannons (once fired to announce the opening and closing of the city gates), and various weapons. Secret passageways and nooks and crannies add to the excitement of a visit here.

If your children like dolphins, and the sea, maybe a camel ride or just to play in a safe pool, should they be older and like that touch of adrenalin with some high wires and zip lines over a canyon, there are tour and adventure companies to arrange those activities.
