The climate throughout most of Mongolia , including the capital city of Ulan Bator , is continental, which means that the summers are generally very short, with mild temperatures and frequent rainstorms, while winters are long and cold. Although it is possible to visit during any time of the year, certain months can get extremely cold, and most tourists choose to avoid them.
On average, the hottest months of the year are July and August, during which time the daily high temperatures will generally hover in the mid 70’s. Temperatures will reach the lower 80’s on occasion, but this is as hot as it gets. The nighttime temperatures during these months will generally drop to the upper 40’s and lower 50’s.
Much of the year is cold, and between October and April the temperatures will only reach the mid 40’s on average. The nighttime temperatures will stay well below the negatives, and will average around -10-degrees between December and February.
Ulan Bator is not a wet place, and most of the year is very dry (receiving less than an inch or rain per month). The months from June through August do however see some rain, as this time is considered the rainy season.
