Bamako is located in the southern section of Mali in what used to be a part of French West Africa. The climate is classified as subtropical and arid. Bamako is hot all year round with annual temperatures in the mid 80s.

February to June is considered the more hot and dry period, whereas June to November is slightly cooler and more dry. March through May are the hottest months with average temperatures around 90 degrees and the temperature often climbs several degrees past 100. July through September are the rainiest months, September seeing an abundance of rain. Oddly enough however, this rainy season is an ideal time to visit. The rain does not generally last all day and it brings more tolerable temperatures than the hot months like March and April. If you spend your time in Bamako in late September, you will get the chance to celebrate Independence Day on September 22; this day recognizes Mali's independence from France.

Another good time to visit is during the biannual Bamako Festival of African Photography which has become an international event. Held in November, visitors get the chance to see a wide range of African art and French influence on the region.
