Most people choose to travel to Michigan and the surrounding Great Lakes during the summertime, so crowds and hotel rates are highest during the months of July and August. Temperatures at that time hover at around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but can jump into the 80s from time to time. If you enjoy colorful foliage and thinner crowds, plan a visit in October. Or go during the winter for downhill skiing, but be prepared for daily temperatures in the 10s and 20s, and occasional dips below zero. And keep in mind that big snowstorms are not uncommon. Spring visitors can expect damp days that are anywhere from 30 degrees Fahrenheit to as high as 60.

If you’re coming in July, stop by the annual Cherry Festival in Traverse City. Since 1926, this fun-filled festival has celebrated and promoted cherries, tourism, and the community. Currently, there are approximately 150 events and activities (85% of which are free) offered over eight days to the more than 500,000 people who attend. Events include pie-eating contests, fishing contests, parades, hot air balloon rides, carnival midway, air shows, fireworks, and much more.

If you’re interested in cars, plan to be in Detroit for the annual North American International Auto Show. And in August come for the annual Woodward Dream Cuise when more than 40,000 cars cruise down Woodward Avenue for the largest one-day car celebration in the world.
