There are two main providers of Cellular/Mobile Phones:
Telecom
Their phones are not GSM so you cannot swap your sim card into them. Cell phone codes for them are 025 and 027. Offer contact and pay as you go terms (also have a brand called Boost)
If you want to buy a Telecom Network phone, they are between $90 and $1000. You cannot sell it back to Telecom when you leave the country.
Rental phones are available, but these are of dubious quality, and you quite often get phone calls from people looking for the previous person on that phone as numbers are not purged when they are returned. The cost per day is around $25 with a bond that is two times the Retail Price of that particular model.
Vodafone
Global company - have global roaming for partner companies and you can buy a sim card for their network for pay as you go or contract. Their sim card will work in your phone if you have a Sim Card compatible phone. It is recommended to do this as overseas companies do charge high call rates to call home from NZ on your sim card.
A new sim card is around $30, with pre paid calling cards available in $10, $20, $50 and $100 blocks.
Both companies offer 3G services and there are WiFi hot spots around the main cities.
- 00 (zero zero) is the International Dialing Code (prefix) you use to make an overseas call from within New Zealand
- 64 (sixty four) is the International Country Code you use to call New Zealand.
